The reliable way to set up a gaming headset is to identify its connection type and platform compatibility first, then connect it, select it for both sound output and microphone input, and test voice chat in the game or app. Wired 3.5 mm, USB, USB-wireless-transceiver, and platform-specific wireless headsets follow different procedures, so a method that works for one model may not work for another.
Use the sections below for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. Model-specific instructions are labelled as examples rather than universal rules.

Start with compatibility and connection type
Find the exact model name and read its setup guide before plugging anything in. “Wireless” and “USB” are not compatibility guarantees: a USB headset may be audio-only on one platform, a wireless transceiver may have separate PC and PS5 modes, and an Xbox connection can require a controller jack or a certified wireless method.

| 3.5 mm analog | Headset plug to a PC jack or controller | The jack and cable must carry microphone input as well as audio. A cable intended only for stereo output will not provide chat. |
| USB wired | Headset USB cable to the computer or console | Support varies by platform and model. The device may appear as one combined headset or as separate game and chat devices. |
| USB wireless transceiver | Manufacturer’s transceiver to the platform, then power on the headset | The transceiver may have a platform switch. It must be set to the correct mode, and pairing instructions are model-specific. |
| Platform-specific wireless | The headset’s supported Xbox or PlayStation wireless link | Do not assume Bluetooth, a Windows adapter, or another console’s wireless standard will work with an unrelated model. |
Check whether the headset needs charging, a removable boom microphone, a firmware or mode switch, and a supplied adapter. Keep the manual available for pairing-button sequences and platform-specific compatibility notes.

Set up a gaming headset on a Windows PC
1. Connect the hardware in the headset’s PC mode
- Charge or power on the headset if it is wireless.
- Connect the 3.5 mm plug, USB cable, or wireless transceiver using the method specified by the manufacturer.
- If the headset has a PC/console switch, select PC before connecting.
- Plug a wireless transceiver directly into the computer when the headset maker recommends a direct connection rather than a hub.
Sony’s INZONE H5 instructions illustrate the model-specific sequence: set the USB transceiver to PC, connect it directly to the computer, and turn on the headset. That sequence applies to the H5, not to every USB wireless headset.
2. Choose playback and recording devices in Windows
Open Windows Sound Settings. Select the headset as the output/playback device and as the input/recording device. If Windows lists separate endpoints, choose the one intended for each job.
Some gaming headsets expose two logical devices, such as a game channel and a chat channel. SteelSeries’ Arctis Pro guide uses Arctis Pro Game Audio for playback and Arctis Pro Chat for recording and voice applications. Sony’s guide similarly distinguishes Game and Chat device names. Selecting only the game endpoint can produce game sound while leaving the microphone on the wrong device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Match the game or chat application’s own selectors
Many PC games and voice applications have independent input and output menus. Open those menus and select the same headset endpoints you chose in Windows, or deliberately assign game audio and chat audio to the separate endpoints your headset provides.
Then check the application’s voice channel, push-to-talk setting, and mute state. A game can be configured correctly in Windows but still use a laptop microphone because its own input selector was never changed.
4. Allow microphone access
Windows privacy controls can block an otherwise working microphone. If the input meter never moves in a game or chat app, check that microphone access is enabled for Windows and for the specific application. Bungie documents this check for Destiny 2; treat it as an example of an app-permission problem, not as a complete universal setup path for every Windows version.

5. Test before joining a match
- Play a system sound and confirm it comes through the headset.
- Speak while watching the application’s input meter or voice indicator.
- Use the headset’s physical volume wheel and mute button, then verify that the software mute indicator changes as expected.
- Make a short test call or join a low-stakes in-game channel before relying on the headset in a competitive session.
6. Fix wireless pairing or interference
If a USB-wireless headset is detected but produces silence, follow its exact re-pairing procedure. For the INZONE H5, Sony instructs the user to hold the transceiver’s connect button and the headset’s power button for about five seconds. That button combination is not a universal fix.
Keep the transceiver and headset within the range specified by the manufacturer. Sony’s H5 pre-setup guidance refers to being within 1 m (3.2 ft) during preparation; this is model-specific guidance, not a general wireless-headset performance statistic. Nearby 2.4 GHz equipment can also cause interference, so temporarily move competing wireless devices away while pairing and testing.
Set up a gaming headset on PlayStation 5
1. Use a method supported by both the headset and PS5
Connect a compatible 3.5 mm headset to the controller, or use the manufacturer’s supported USB or wireless-transceiver method. PlayStation Support warns that “Not all devices work with your console,” so a USB plug fitting the PS5 does not by itself establish compatibility.
For Sony’s INZONE H5, set the USB transceiver switch to PS5, connect it to the console, and turn on the headset. Sony recommends the PS5’s front USB port for that transceiver. Do not copy this port or switch procedure to another model unless its manual gives the same instruction.
2. Select the output device
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Under Output Device, select the headset.
- Check Output to Headphones and choose the audio that should be routed to the headset.
- Play a game or system sound and adjust the headset and console volume controls.
The exact options shown can depend on the connected device and audio configuration. If the headset is not listed, turn it on, reconnect its cable or transceiver, and recheck compatibility before changing unrelated audio options.

4. Check the game’s chat channel
After the PS5 sees the microphone, confirm that the game has you in the intended party, team, or game-chat channel. A console-level microphone test cannot correct a game-specific channel or mute setting.
Set up a gaming headset on Xbox
1. Confirm support for the exact Xbox model
Read the headset’s Xbox compatibility statement before connecting it. Xbox product information describes several possible routes—including a controller’s 3.5 mm jack, USB-C, Bluetooth-compatible devices, and the Windows wireless adapter—but those options are not automatically available to every third-party headset or every Xbox console.
For example, SteelSeries documents connecting its Arctis Pro to an Xbox controller with the included 3.5 mm cable. That is an example for that headset, not a universal Xbox rule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Connect using the documented route
- For a controller connection, insert the headset’s compatible 3.5 mm plug fully into the controller.
- For USB or wireless, use only the port, adapter, and console mode named in the headset manual.
- Power on the headset and wait for its connection indicator before opening a game.
If a wired headset has sound but no microphone, inspect the plug and cable first. The connection must support microphone input, and the headset’s mute control must be off.
3. Check Xbox audio and mixer controls
Use the Xbox audio and music area to adjust headset volume, chat balance, and mute controls where those options are available. The exact menu labels and controls can vary by console, headset, and connection type, so follow the current labels shown on your system rather than relying on a menu path from a different model.
4. Test party and game chat
Join an Xbox party or the game’s voice channel and ask another player whether your voice is clear. If party chat works but game chat does not, the remaining problem is likely the game’s channel, voice setting, or mute state rather than the physical connection.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
How game audio and chat audio are divided
Gaming headsets often expose separate “Game” and “Chat” streams. Game audio carries effects, music, and dialogue; chat audio carries party or voice-app conversations. A headset’s dial or software mixer may balance those streams, but only if the operating system and application are assigned correctly.
- On PC, set Windows playback and recording devices, then check the game or chat app’s own selectors.
- On PS5, set Output Device, Output to Headphones, and Input Device separately.
- On Xbox, use the headset and console audio controls supplied for the supported connection method.
Do not treat a game-specific voice menu as a platform-wide setting. Bungie’s Destiny 2 guide, for instance, describes Destiny-specific chat options and permission checks; another game can use different names, channels, or defaults.
Troubleshoot in this order
There is no sound at all
- Confirm the headset is charged, powered on, and not in a standby state.
- Reseat the cable or transceiver and verify that any mode switch is set to the current platform.
- Confirm platform compatibility for the exact model.
- Select the headset as the output device: Windows playback settings, PS5 Settings > Sound > Audio Output, or the Xbox audio controls.
- Raise both system volume and the headset’s physical volume, and check for a hardware mute switch that also mutes audio.
Sound works but the microphone is silent
- Unmute the headset and extend or reconnect its boom microphone if it is removable.
- Select the headset as the input or recording device.
- On PS5, use the PS button’s Mic controls, choose Input Device, and adjust Microphone Level into the Good range.
- On PC, check microphone privacy permissions and the game or chat app’s input selector.
- On Xbox, verify that the cable and controller connection carry microphone input and that the console’s chat controls are not muted.
Other players hear the wrong microphone
Close other voice applications temporarily, then select the intended headset microphone in the game and chat app. On PC, separate Game and Chat endpoints make this especially common: the application may be recording from a laptop microphone or a headset’s game endpoint instead of its chat endpoint.
The headset works in menus but not in a game
Open the game’s audio and voice menus. Confirm voice chat is enabled, select the correct input and output devices where the game allows it, choose the intended channel, and check push-to-talk or in-game mute. A working platform-level test does not override game-specific settings.
A wireless headset will not pair
- Confirm the transceiver is connected directly as instructed and is in the correct PC, PS5, or Xbox mode.
- Move nearby 2.4 GHz devices away during pairing.
- Follow the manufacturer’s exact re-pairing sequence; do not substitute a button combination from another model.
- Power-cycle the headset and transceiver, then repeat the documented pairing process.
The headset is detected but audio is intermittent or noisy
Test with the transceiver closer to the headset, remove nearby wireless interference, and try a different supported USB port. If the problem occurs only in one game or voice app, compare its device selectors with the platform’s selected devices before blaming the hardware.

If you need an adapter or replacement
Choose based on the connection and features the target platform actually supports, not on a “wireless” or “USB” label alone.
| Question to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the headset compatible with this specific PC, PS5, or Xbox setup? | Console support can be model- and generation-specific. |
| Which connection methods are supported? | A 3.5 mm cable, USB, transceiver, and platform wireless link are not interchangeable. |
| Does microphone input work over that connection? | Some paths provide stereo output but no return microphone channel. |
| Are Game and Chat separate devices? | You may need different playback and recording selections in Windows or the voice app. |
| Is a model-specific adapter or transceiver required? | The correct accessory can be essential for pairing, console mode, or chat support. |
When the answer to any of these questions is unclear, stop and check the exact headset manual or manufacturer compatibility list. A connector that physically fits is not proof that game audio and microphone chat will both work.
Final verification before you play
Run one complete test on the platform you will use: hear a system or game sound, speak into the microphone while watching its meter or asking a friend to confirm, adjust the headset volume and mute controls, and join the actual game or party channel. If any part fails, return to the troubleshooting branch for that symptom rather than changing several settings at once.
