For a comfortable, clean-playing electric guitar, set it up in this order: tune it with the strings you plan to use, check neck relief, adjust string action, then set intonation. Retune and recheck between adjustments. The right measurements depend on the guitar and your playing touch, so treat manufacturer figures as starting points and follow the manual for your exact model.
What a basic guitar setup changes
A setup commonly addresses three related things: neck relief, the slight curve that gives vibrating strings room above the frets; action, the height of the strings above the frets; and intonation, the effective length of each string at the bridge so notes stay in tune along the neck. Fresh strings and correct tuning matter because string condition, gauge, and tension affect the measurements and adjustments. Prepare the guitar and tools
Before adjusting anything, identify the guitar model and consult its owner’s manual or model-specific setup instructions. Decide which tuning and string gauge you intend to keep; changing either later can affect relief and intonation. Fender’s general setup guidance starts with fresh strings at the intended pitch and recommends checking tuning during the process.

- Tuner and fresh strings: use the tuning and gauge you expect to play.
- Feeler gauge: useful for measuring neck relief.
- String action gauge: helps measure string height. Fender’s gauge includes a reference guide for its factory specifications: Fender String Action Gauge.
- Correct adjustment tools: use only the truss-rod wrench and bridge screwdriver specified for your guitar. Hardware and adjustment methods vary by model.
1. Check and adjust neck relief
To check relief, Fender describes placing a capo at the first fret, fretting a string at the last fret (or near the neck joint on some guitars), then measuring the gap around the eighth fret with a feeler gauge. Fender’s current reference guide lists these electric-guitar relief measurements at the eighth fret for its stated standard strings:

If the relief needs adjustment, first check the manual for the correct truss-rod access and method. Do not force the wrench. Fender advises seeking dealer help if you are uncomfortable with the adjustment or meet excessive resistance.
2. Set string action for your playing touch
Action is usually measured from the top of the 17th fret to the underside of each string in Fender’s electric-guitar chart. Its references vary by fingerboard radius:

These are Fender’s minimum guide values, not a prescription for all instruments. A lighter touch may allow lower action; a harder picking attack may need more clearance to avoid rattles or fret buzz. Fender discusses how action and playing touch relate in What Is “Action” and How Low Can It Go?
Make small changes using the adjustment method for your bridge, retune, then play open strings, chords, and fretted notes across the neck with your normal touch. If strings buzz or notes choke out, raise the action slightly and test again. Lowering action can affect other setup needs, so follow the adjustment sequence and recheck the guitar rather than assuming one bridge change solves everything. 3. Set intonation after relief and action
Intonation should be finalized only after relief and action are where you want them, because changes to those settings can affect the result. At the bridge, intonation adjustment changes each string’s effective length. Follow the instructions for your specific bridge; designs differ, so do not assume a procedure for one bridge applies to another.

4. Recheck the whole guitar
Retune and test the instrument with your usual playing touch. Check open and fretted notes across the fretboard, listen for buzzes or rattles, and make sure the controls work. A basic setup cannot correct every underlying problem: persistent issues, or an abnormal neck, nut, frets, bridge, or truss rod, may need diagnosis by a guitar technician. Use a technician rather than forcing an uncertain or resistant truss-rod adjustment.
