Connect Apple TV 4K to your television with HDMI and to power, then follow the on-screen setup. For a quicker start, choose Set Up with iPhone when offered; Apple says this can add your Apple Account and Wi-Fi settings. To keep apps and Home Screen appearance in sync with an older Apple TV, enable One Home Screen on both devices using the same Apple Account. This is not a full device transfer: Apple’s instructions do not promise to copy every setting, app-specific state, or third-party login.
What to prepare before setup
- A television or display with an HDMI port, and broadband internet.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password if you plan to connect wirelessly.
- Your Apple Account details. An Apple Account is used for account-linked services, purchases and rentals, and App Store downloads.
- An iPhone or iPad nearby if you want to use the expedited setup option.
- For a 4K HDR television, a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, as specified by Apple’s connection guidance.
Ethernet is an alternative to Wi-Fi only on Apple TV models with an Ethernet port. Apple says Ethernet is not available on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi. Check the ports on your particular model before planning a wired connection: Apple TV 4K connections.

Connect Apple TV 4K and complete initial setup
- Connect Apple TV 4K to the television with an HDMI cable, then connect the Apple TV to a power outlet.
- Turn on the television and select the HDMI input connected to Apple TV.
- Follow the onscreen prompts for network access and configuration. When offered, choose Set Up with iPhone or iPad, then follow the prompts on both devices. Apple documents this option as a way to automatically add Apple Account and Wi-Fi settings: Set up Apple TV.
- To set up without an iPhone or iPad, use the Apple TV onscreen flow to join Wi-Fi and sign in with your Apple Account.
- Finish any additional prompts that apply to you, such as provider sign-in where available, assigning the Apple TV to a room in the Home app, or adding users. Available options vary by region and feature.
Carry over apps and Home Screen appearance
Apple’s documented continuity option is called One Home Screen. Enable it for the default profile on the old Apple TV, then enable it for the default profile on the new Apple TV. Both devices must use the same Apple Account. Apple says One Home Screen keeps apps and Home Screen appearance up to date across Apple TVs associated with that account: Apple TV user and Home Screen settings.

Fix setup problems
iPhone-assisted setup is not working
Apple’s checklist for iPhone-assisted setup includes updating the iPhone to the latest iOS, signing in to iCloud with the Apple Account and enabling two-factor authentication, turning on iCloud Keychain and Bluetooth, and connecting the iPhone to home Wi-Fi. Apple TV stops responding during setup
Unplug Apple TV from power, wait briefly, and reconnect it. If it still cannot get past a setup screen, Apple recommends trying another Wi-Fi network, such as a phone hotspot. Once setup is complete, connect Apple TV to your home Wi-Fi network. Apple Support
