Protect the device with a screen lock where available, secure its account with two-factor verification or a passkey where offered, install current software, and use trusted apps. Apple’s cited steps cover iPhone and iPad; Sony’s cover Android/Google TVs; Bose’s update guidance is specific to certain products.
Before you begin: identify the model and prepare recovery
Find the product model and software family, then open its current manufacturer setup guide. Menu labels and setup screens can differ by product, region, model, and firmware; Sony explicitly notes those differences for its TVs. Do not assume that instructions for one Apple, Sony, or Bose product apply to another.

- Connect through a trusted home Wi-Fi network or another connection supported by the device.
- Have your account credentials and a working recovery method ready. If you are transferring content, use the manufacturer’s supported migration or backup process.
- Start setup from the device’s built-in assistant or the manufacturer’s official app—not from an unsolicited link or an unfamiliar app.
Set up the device and secure its account
Apple iPhone or iPad
Apple’s setup flow covers connecting to Wi-Fi or cellular, choosing Quick Start or manual setup, transferring or restoring content, signing in to an Apple Account, and setting up Face ID or Touch ID where supported. The setup guide describes a six-digit passcode as the default, with other options available. Choose a passcode you do not reuse elsewhere; a local device lock protects access to the device and is not replaced by account sign-in.

On a new device, Apple Account sign-in uses your password and a six-digit verification code. Apple says the code can appear on a trusted device or be sent to a trusted phone number. Turn on two-factor authentication if it is not already enabled, and keep the trusted numbers on the account current. Apple recommends considering an additional trusted number if the only number is tied to the only trusted device: losing or damaging that device could otherwise leave you unable to receive a code.

Apple also supports physical security keys as an optional additional account safeguard. Its 2026 guidance requires at least two keys once the feature is enabled, so a single key is not a complete recovery plan. Check compatibility before buying; the support guidance does not endorse a particular key brand.
Sony Android TV or Google TV
Follow the TV’s initial setup assistant to connect it to the internet and, if needed for the services you want, add a Google Account. Sony’s instructions cover Android TV and Google TV models, but exact screens and steps vary by country or region, model, and firmware. Secure the Google Account with a passkey or two-step verification where available, and maintain its recovery methods.

Keep apps within trusted platform sources. Sony warns that allowing apps from unknown sources can make the TV and personal data more vulnerable to attack. Avoid changing the TV’s security restrictions just to install an app unless you understand and accept that added risk.
Bose products
Use the app specified in the owner guide for your exact Bose product; not every Bose product necessarily uses the same app. For the Soundbar 500 and QuietComfort 45, Bose’s owner guides say automatic security updates require completing setup in the Bose Music app and connecting the product to the internet. Follow the corresponding guide for other models rather than assuming those instructions apply.

Update software and review settings
Check for system updates
After setup, check for available software or firmware updates and install them. On Sony Android TV and Google TV, the route varies by model and software; use the matching Sony support instructions, and enable automatic update checks where the model offers that setting. Do not disconnect power or interrupt an update while it is installing.
For supported Bose products whose guides specify automatic security updates, leave the product connected to the internet after completing app setup. Apple’s iPhone and iPad setup guide includes automatic update options; review them during setup and keep the device current.

Choose only the permissions and features you need
Review privacy, voice-assistant, analytics, location, and app-permission settings. Enable only the features you intend to use. The exact controls and labels depend on the product, region, and software, so consult the model-specific guide rather than searching for a universal menu path.

- Review the account’s signed-in device list and remove devices you do not recognize. Apple provides account settings for removing an unknown device.
- Confirm that trusted phone numbers and other recovery methods still work, especially if your phone is also your only trusted device.
- Where the account provider offers recovery codes or backup methods, store them somewhere separate from the device they protect.
Where setup guidance differs
Choose the path based on the exact product and its supported software, not the manufacturer name alone. A useful way to compare setup choices is to check whether they preserve account recovery access, keep updates available, require an app or service for core functions, and request only permissions needed for the feature. Also account for accessibility, content transfer, and family or child setup needs. These are decision factors, not a ranking of the brands.

Sony says its Support by Sony app will end on February 28, 2027. Its notice says firmware update information for compatible products will remain available through dedicated product apps, Sony support websites, and support video channels. If you use that app, check Sony’s notice for current alternatives and availability.
