To set up a new Android tablet, connect it to Wi-Fi, sign in with the Google Account that owns the apps and content you want, then choose whether to copy directly from an old Android device, restore a Google Account backup, or start fresh. Before erasing the old device, check that the important contacts, photos, files, messages, and app data are actually available on the tablet.
Choose a setup route
The right option depends on whether you still have the old device, can unlock it, and have a usable Google Account backup. Google’s setup guidance covers Android devices generally; screens and available options can vary by tablet maker, Android version, and whether the tablet is managed by an organization.

| Setup route | What you need | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy from an old Android device | The old device, its screen lock, internet access, and either a suitable cable or Wi-Fi | You can unlock the old device and want to move supported data during initial setup | It is not a complete file-system clone; some files, accounts, settings, and app data will not copy. Google’s Android-to-Android transfer guidance lists exclusions. |
| Restore a Google Account backup | Access to the Google Account used for the backup, Wi-Fi, and possibly the old device’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password | The old device is unavailable or a recent backup is the most convenient starting point | Not all apps restore all settings or data, and restoring to an older Android version can leave the transfer incomplete. Google’s backup and restore guidance explains the limits. |
| Set up as new | Wi-Fi and the Google Account you want to use, if you want Google services and Play Store access | You want a clean tablet or do not need to bring over old-device data | Content that exists only on the old device will not appear unless you move or sync it separately. |
Google recommends backing up the old device first. Have both devices charged, make sure the old one can be unlocked, and keep Wi-Fi available. If you are restoring without the old device, make sure you know the account credentials before beginning. Google’s setup instructions describe the copy and restore choices.
Copy directly from an old Android device
Start the copy during the new tablet’s initial setup, when prompted to copy apps and data. Google describes both wired and wireless transfer; its guidance says they support the same data. The instructions recommend a cable, but wireless is a valid alternative. Both devices need internet connectivity, and Google recommends Wi-Fi. Depending on how much data is being moved, Google estimates direct transfer can take from a few minutes to more than an hour; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed duration. See Google’s transfer instructions.

Use a cable if it fits both devices
Check the ports and cable specifications on both the old device and the tablet before connecting them. A compatible data cable or an appropriate adapter may be needed; a charging-only cable may not support data transfer. Follow the tablet’s setup prompts after connecting the devices. If the cable does not fit, or you do not have one that supports data, choose wireless transfer instead.
Use wireless transfer
Select the wireless copy option in the setup flow and follow the prompts on both devices. Keep them powered and connected to Wi-Fi while the transfer runs. The time required depends on the amount of data and device conditions.

Know what direct copy leaves behind
Google says its setup transfer does not copy every item. Examples include downloaded PDFs; photos, videos, and music stored in hidden folders; apps installed outside Google Play; data from apps that do not use Android backup; non-Google accounts and their data; contacts or calendars synced with non-Google services; ringtones; and some device settings. Check important files and app-specific transfer instructions separately. Google lists transfer exclusions here.

If the old device is gone or unavailable, choose the backup restore option during tablet setup, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in to the Google Account used for the backup. Google says the restore flow may also ask for the previous device’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Restoring works best when the new tablet runs the same or a later Android version than the old device; Google warns that an older version may result in an incomplete transfer. Google’s Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS messages. Some additional content is handled by individual Google apps: for example, photos and videos can be backed up through Google Photos when that feature is configured. Google cautions that not every app can back up or restore every setting and item of data, so do not assume an app’s login, local files, or preferences will return automatically. Review what Android backup covers.
For WhatsApp specifically, Google’s transfer guidance says chats and data restore from the cloud after you sign in and open the app, provided WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old device. Do not assume the same process applies to other messaging apps. Google’s Android transfer page describes this WhatsApp case.

Choose the right Google Account and install apps
During setup, sign in with the Google Account that owns the Play purchases and apps you want available. Google says purchased apps and content can be used on compatible Android devices without paying again when you use the same Google Account. Contacts already saved to a Google Account appear after sign-in, while music services may sync after you install and sign in to their apps. Google Play explains how to find and reinstall apps.
Reinstall only the apps you want
To find previously installed apps, open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then choose Manage apps & device and the manage view for apps not currently installed. Select the apps to install. The exact labels may vary by Play Store version. A phone’s entire app collection may not make sense on a larger tablet or a shared device, so review the list rather than reinstalling everything automatically.

Decide whether to sync app installs across devices
Google Play can automatically install selected apps across devices signed in to the same Google Account. This is optional; review the apps and devices associated with the account if you want to control what appears on the tablet. Google Play’s app-management guidance covers managing installs.
Turn on and check tablet backup
Menu names can differ by tablet, but Google’s current general path is Settings → Google services → All services → Backup. Turn backup on; use Back up now to start a manual backup. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours to complete, so a newly enabled backup may not be ready immediately. Google’s backup instructions describe the setting and timing.
- Google recommends using a screen lock with a PIN, pattern, or password rather than swipe or Smart Lock to help protect backed-up data.
- Google states that up to 15 GB of storage is available at no charge for a Google Account, with additional storage available through Google One. Check the account’s available storage; the stated allowance is not a guarantee that all of it is available solely for tablet backups.
- For photos and videos, check Google Photos backup settings. For individual files and folders, use Google Drive or copy them to a computer if they are not otherwise synced.
After enabling backup, check the backup screen for its status and the date of the most recent backup. Keep app-specific backup options in mind for services that store data separately from Android backup.
Verify the copy before wiping the old device
Open the new tablet and check the content that matters to you: contacts, photos, files, messages, and the apps you rely on. For any app with its own cloud or account-based backup, open it and confirm that its data has returned. If something is missing, use the old device, its app, or a separate cloud or computer copy to retrieve it before resetting the old device. Google advises confirming the transfer before clearing, trading in, or recycling the old device, and recommends a factory reset before giving it away. See Google’s advice on restoring and managing device data.
