To set up a Moto Tag 2, bring it near an unlocked Android phone, remove the tag’s protective film, then tap Connect when Google Fast Pair appears. Motorola documents the setup for Android 9 or later. Once pairing finishes, the tag should appear in both Google Find Hub and the Moto Tag app.
Before you pair the Moto Tag 2
Motorola’s Moto Tag 2 guide lists these requirements and preparations:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- An Android phone running Android 9 or later.
- An internet connection and Bluetooth turned on.
- A Google account signed in on the phone for full Google Fast Pair functionality.
- Google Find Hub installed. If prompted, allow it to find and connect to nearby devices and determine their relative position while you use the app.
Keep the phone unlocked and close to the tag during setup. To view the tag’s location later, Motorola says you may need to sign in or enter the phone’s screen lock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPair the tag with your Android phone
- For a new tag, gently pull out the protective film. The tag powers on and beeps.
- With Bluetooth and internet enabled, bring the unlocked phone close to the awake tag.
- When the Fast Pair prompt appears, tap Connect and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the Moto Tag app is offered during setup, install it. If not, get it through Motorola’s Moto Tag app download page or Google Play.
After pairing, Motorola says the tag’s current location appears on the Find Hub map, and the tag is listed in both Find Hub and Moto Tag. Use Find Hub as the main place to select and locate it.

Find and use the tag in Find Hub
Open Find Hub on the paired phone and select the Moto Tag 2 from the device list. The available result depends on whether the tag can be located nearby or only through a reported location.
- Nearby: The map can show the tag’s location. Find nearby gives an indication of whether you are moving closer or farther away, and Play sound rings the tag.
- Not nearby: The map may show the tag’s last known location. You can request directions, mark it lost to receive a notice if the Find Hub network detects it, and add contact information for someone who finds it.
Motorola says participating Android devices scan for nearby items over Bluetooth and securely report detected locations to Find Hub. This network-assisted finding depends on participating devices detecting the tag; it is not guaranteed real-time tracking everywhere. Motorola’s Android 16 example for enabling the tag’s own precise location is Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub > Allow device to be located. The menu path can differ by phone.
What if the Fast Pair prompt does not appear?
- If you dismissed the prompt, wait up to five minutes, then press the tag’s button once to activate Fast Pair again.
- If pairing still does not start, check for an update to Google Play services, as Motorola recommends.
Motorola’s illustrated route for checking Google Play services uses Android 16 on a Motorola phone, so the exact settings menus may differ on other devices.

Which nearby-finding features does your phone support?
Android 9 or later is the documented baseline for pairing; enhanced nearby-finding features have additional hardware and software requirements. They are not prerequisites for the basic Fast Pair setup.
- Bluetooth Low Energy: Used for nearby finding.
- Ultra-wideband (UWB): Requires a UWB-capable Android phone running Android 12 or later, with UWB enabled; availability varies by region. Google lists support on selected Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and Motorola Edge/Razr models, not every Android phone. See Google’s UWB support information.
- Bluetooth Channel Sounding: Requires a supported phone with Bluetooth 6.0 and Android 16 or later.
These capabilities can improve nearby guidance, but support depends on the particular phone and, for UWB, regional availability. Check the phone’s specifications rather than assuming that an Android version alone guarantees support. Motorola describes the supported finding methods in its Find Hub guidance.

The Moto Tag 2 uses a user-replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Motorola advertises “over 600 days” of battery life based on the median user under optimal network conditions; this is a manufacturer estimate, not an independently verified runtime. Actual life varies with temperature, battery condition, usage and other factors. See Motorola’s product information.
A carrying case can attach the tag to keys, a wallet, a bag, luggage or an electronic device. Motorola advises choosing a case open on both sides so it does not block the button or reduce buzzer volume. The cited guidance does not establish a universal list of compatible third-party cases.
Google says tracker tags are for locating belongings such as keys and luggage, and should not be used to track pets or locate stolen items. See Google’s tracker-tag guidance.
