Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by identifying the exact handheld: a Steam Deck and an ASUS ROG Ally-family device use different documented setup paths and file systems. Before you format anything, back up files you need to keep; formatting erases the card.
Identify your handheld before formatting
“Handheld gaming PC” covers devices with different operating systems, storage support, and setup instructions. Do not assume that a card formatted for one model will be ready to use in another. The steps below cover Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and ROG Xbox Ally (RC73); they are not universal instructions for every Windows handheld.

Check the model name and the manufacturer’s current support page first. Then verify the card’s capacity and speed against that exact device’s specifications. The official Steam Deck booklet states that a Steam Deck can use a microSD card for up to 2 TB of additional storage. That is a Steam Deck specification, not a capacity limit or guarantee for other handheld PCs. The material cited here does not establish a particular speed rating or recommend a specific card model.

What to check before you start
- Device: Confirm the exact model and follow its manufacturer’s instructions. The file system and formatting workflow differ between the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally family.
- Capacity and speed: Compare the card’s specifications with the supported capacity and speed for your exact device. Do not infer compatibility from another handheld’s specification.
- Data on the card: Copy anything you need to keep to another location before formatting. Formatting erases existing contents.
- Where you will format: Steam Deck documents an on-device format flow. ASUS’s ROG Ally guide describes formatting on a Windows computer before inserting the card; ROG Xbox Ally guidance also documents formatting from its Windows desktop or Xbox full-screen experience.
- Install destination: Formatting prepares the card, but it does not automatically make it the destination for future game downloads. Choose the card or a folder on it in the game launcher.
What you may need
You need a compatible microSD card and the handheld’s card slot. A computer is not required for the documented Steam Deck format process. For the ROG Ally workflow, you need access to a Windows laptop or desktop with a card slot, or a compatible USB microSD card reader. The reader is an optional way to connect the card to a computer; it is not a requirement for every handheld setup.

Have a second storage location ready for backups. Copy personal files, screenshots, installers, or anything else you cannot replace before opening a format dialog. Do not assume that a later reformat will recover deleted data. Formatting is the destructive step in both the Steam Deck and ASUS instructions.
Steam Deck: format the card on the device
How do I format a microSD card for Steam Deck?
- Insert the microSD card into the slot on the bottom of the Steam Deck.
- In Steam, open Settings > System > Format SD card.
- Follow the on-screen flow. The format process erases the card, so continue only after backing up files you want to keep.
Steam Support’s “Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide” gives that menu path: insert the card in the slot on the bottom surface, then use the Format SD card command. If the card contains files you still need, cancel the operation and copy them elsewhere before proceeding. Check the selected device and the warning screen rather than treating the format as a routine, reversible setup action.
Which file system does Steam Deck use?
Valve’s official Steam Deck FAQ specifies that its microSD cards use ext4 with case distinction removed. This is not a normal NTFS game drive: do not expect Windows to read it as an ordinary NTFS-formatted card when you move it between systems. File systems and compatibility differ across operating systems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction matters if you are planning to remove the card and use it in a Windows computer. A Windows computer may not present the Deck’s ext4 card as a conventional drive for browsing and game management. Do not reformat the card simply because another operating system does not show it as expected; reformatting would erase the Deck’s contents. If you need to move files between systems, first check current support instructions for both operating systems and preserve a backup of anything important.
After formatting on Steam Deck
Formatting prepares the card for the Deck, but the instructions cited here do not provide a verified, exact sequence for adding a Steam library folder on the Deck. Steam Support says Desktop Mode works like a normal PC for browsing, downloading, and installing applications, but that general description is not a specific library-folder procedure. Do not rely on an assumed menu path: use the current Steam Deck or Steam Support instructions for assigning a library or game destination if you need to change where games install.
In other words, do not confuse a successful format notification with proof that every future download will use the card. Confirm the current destination controls in the Deck’s Steam interface before starting a large installation. If the option is not visible, stop and consult the current support page instead of applying the Windows instructions below.
ROG Ally: format on a Windows computer, then select a game destination
Format the card
ASUS’s published ROG Ally installation guide calls for NTFS and shows formatting the card on a Windows laptop or desktop. The guide is hosted on ASUS’s Norwegian regional site, with the setup steps presented in English. The computer-based route is separate from the Steam Deck’s on-device ext4 format.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Back up files you need from the microSD card. Formatting will erase its contents.
- Insert the card into a Windows computer. Use a built-in card slot or a compatible USB microSD card reader if needed.
- Open File Explorer and locate the card’s new volume. Check carefully that you have selected the microSD card, not another drive.
- Right-click that volume and choose Format.
- Select NTFS as the file system. You may enter a volume label if you want to identify the card; that label is optional.
- Start formatting and wait for Windows to finish. Then safely remove the card and insert it into the handheld.
Read the drive letter, label, and reported capacity before confirming. The warning applies to the selected volume, so choosing the wrong drive could erase unrelated files. After Windows completes the operation, eject the card before removing it, then insert it in the ROG Ally. The guide’s NTFS instruction is specific to the ROG Ally workflow. Do not apply it to the Steam Deck, whose documented format is ext4.
Set an installation location in Steam
On the ROG Ally, ASUS documents this Steam library setup path: Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders. Select the plus sign, choose the card, and select Add. Once the card’s library is available, select the appropriate library or destination when installing a game.

The format and the library registration are separate actions. A card can appear in File Explorer and still not be selected for a particular Steam download. Add it as a Steam Library Folder first, then check the install-location control in the game’s installation dialog. If several libraries are listed, choose the one whose path is on the microSD card rather than the internal storage.
Choose the card in another launcher
For Xbox, Battle.net, Epic, EA, Ubisoft Connect, and GOG, ASUS directs users to choose a destination or folder during the launcher’s installation flow. The exact screen can vary by launcher and version. When prompted, browse to the card or to the folder on it where you want the game installed; do not leave the destination on the internal drive if your goal is to install to the card.
Look for labels such as Install location, Destination, Storage, or Folder. Some launchers expose the choice when you start a game installation; others may offer a default-location setting. Select the NTFS card’s volume or a folder on that volume, verify the path shown in the confirmation screen, and only then begin the download. ASUS’s guidance confirms destination selection for these launchers but does not promise an identical sequence of buttons in every software version.
ROG Xbox Ally (RC73): format from Windows or Xbox full-screen
ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally FAQ documents NTFS for the RC73 and provides a card-formatting route through either the Windows desktop or the Xbox full-screen experience. The FAQ was last updated on November 19, 2025; check the current support instructions for changes.
Format and prepare a game folder
- Back up anything you want to keep from the card; formatting erases its existing contents.
- Use the documented Windows desktop or Xbox full-screen experience formatting flow and select NTFS.
- After formatting, create or select a folder on the card for game data. ASUS’s FAQ specifically says to create a new folder to store game data after formatting.
If you use the Windows desktop, confirm that the selected volume is the microSD card before starting the format. If you use the Xbox full-screen experience, follow its current on-screen storage instructions rather than substituting the Steam Deck menu path. The important device-specific requirements are NTFS and a folder that the launcher can use for game data.
Choose the folder when installing
In the Xbox full-screen experience, choose Choose a folder for your games, then create or select the folder on the card. For Steam and other launchers, choose the card or the relevant folder during the launcher’s installation setup. ASUS also documents the Steam library route as Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders, then the plus sign, select the card, and choose Add.
Do not assume that selecting the card once changes every launcher. Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, Epic, EA, Ubisoft Connect, and GOG can maintain separate destination settings. Check the destination each time you add a launcher or begin an installation, especially after a software update or after removing and reinserting the card.
Device paths compared
| Device path | Documented format | Where formatting happens | How to direct installs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck | ext4 with case distinction removed (Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ) | On the Deck: Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card | Use the current Steam Deck instructions; the Steam Support material cited here does not give an exact library-folder sequence. |
| ROG Ally | NTFS (ASUS’s ROG Ally guide) | Windows laptop or desktop: File Explorer, right-click the card volume, choose Format, select NTFS | Add the card through Steam Library Folders or choose a destination in the launcher’s install flow. |
| ROG Xbox Ally (RC73) | NTFS (ASUS’s FAQ) | Windows desktop or Xbox full-screen experience | Create or select a folder on the card; use “Choose a folder for your games” in the Xbox full-screen experience or choose a folder in the launcher. |
The useful comparison is not simply “which card is faster.” It is the combination of operating system, file system, where formatting occurs, and how the launcher selects a destination. Steam Deck’s documented path is an on-device ext4 format. ASUS’s Ally-family paths use NTFS and rely on Windows or the Xbox full-screen experience, followed by a folder or library selection.
These paths are product-specific. ASUS’s Windows steps should not be treated as instructions for every Windows-based handheld; check the support page for your model. Likewise, the Steam Deck’s up-to-2-TB figure should not be presented as a universal handheld-PC limit.

Make sure games install to the card
A card can be formatted correctly and still not receive a new game if the launcher is set to use a different location. During installation, look for a storage, library, folder, or destination choice. Select the card or the folder you prepared on it. For Steam on the ROG Ally family, add the card as a Steam Library Folder before choosing it as an install location. For the ROG Xbox Ally’s Xbox full-screen experience, use the games-folder choice described above.

If the path points to internal storage, cancel or go back and change it. A launcher may remember a previous location, so verify rather than assuming your last choice is still active. Keep the card inserted while installing and avoid removing it during downloads or updates.
If an install screen does not offer a clear destination choice, stop before confirming the download and consult that launcher’s current instructions. The material cited here confirms destination selection across the listed launchers but does not provide identical click-by-click steps for every launcher.
Capacity, speed, and accessory considerations
Choose capacity only after checking the exact handheld specification. Valve’s Steam Deck booklet states up to 2 TB of additional microSD storage for Steam Deck. That number describes the Steam Deck product and should not be used to promise that an ROG Ally, ROG Xbox Ally, or another handheld accepts the same capacity.
Also compare the card’s speed specification with the handheld manufacturer’s requirements. The official setup material covered here does not publish a benchmark or a universal speed recommendation, so avoid treating a particular speed class as guaranteed for every model. If the manufacturer lists a requirement or supported range for your exact device, follow that information.
A USB microSD card reader can be useful when a Windows laptop or desktop lacks a built-in slot, particularly for the ROG Ally computer-formatting route. It is an optional accessory, not a substitute for checking the correct drive and not a requirement for the Steam Deck’s documented on-device process. The central purchase is a compatible card; confirm capacity and speed before buying instead of relying on a recommendation intended for another handheld.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Formatting before checking what is on the card: Formatting erases existing data. Back up important files first.
- Selecting the wrong drive in Windows: File Explorer may show several volumes. Confirm the card’s label and capacity before choosing Format.
- Using one device’s file system for another: The documented Steam Deck format is ext4, while ASUS specifies NTFS for the ROG Ally and ROG Xbox Ally paths covered here.
- Expecting a Steam Deck card to behave like a Windows NTFS drive: The Steam Deck uses ext4 with case distinction removed; Windows should not be expected to treat it as a normal NTFS game drive.
- Assuming format equals install destination: A successful format does not set every launcher to install games there. Select the card or its folder in the launcher.
- Skipping the game-data folder on ROG Xbox Ally: ASUS’s RC73 FAQ says to create or select a folder on the formatted card for game data.
- Treating 2 TB as a universal handheld limit: Valve’s booklet states up to 2 TB additional microSD storage for Steam Deck. Check the specifications of other devices separately.
- Applying these steps to an unlisted handheld: The instructions here cover Steam Deck and the cited ASUS ROG Ally family only. Follow the exact model’s support guidance for other handheld PCs.
- Moving the card between operating systems without planning: The Deck’s ext4 format and Windows-oriented NTFS workflow are different. Back up data and confirm compatibility before moving or reformatting a card.
- Removing the card during an install: Leave it inserted while a launcher downloads or updates game files, and use the operating system’s eject controls before physically removing it.
Troubleshooting the setup
The handheld does not show the card
Stop before formatting again. Confirm that the card is inserted in the correct slot and that you are following the instructions for the exact model. For an ROG Ally, verify that the Windows format completed as NTFS and that you safely removed the card from the computer before reinserting it. For a Steam Deck, use the documented Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card path and read the current support guidance if the card is not offered.
The card appears, but the launcher installs internally
Formatting alone does not change a launcher’s destination. Add the card as a Steam Library Folder on the ROG Ally, or choose the card’s folder in the Xbox full-screen experience and other launchers. Recheck the path in the installation confirmation dialog before downloading.
Windows cannot browse a Steam Deck card normally
The Deck’s documented file system is ext4 with case distinction removed, not NTFS. Do not reformat solely to make Windows recognize it as a normal drive, because that would erase its contents. Preserve a backup and consult current support instructions for any cross-system file transfer.
