To set up a MetaMask wallet, install the official app or browser extension, choose Create a new wallet, and follow the prompts. During setup, decide whether you want to secure a Secret Recovery Phrase yourself or, where available, use social login. The key difference is what you must protect to regain access: the recovery phrase for the first option, or both your linked social account and MetaMask password for the second.
Download MetaMask from an official store
Start at MetaMask’s official download page and use the extension store or mobile app store appropriate for your device. Avoid sponsored search results and unfamiliar download sites. MetaMask warns that cloned apps can record a newly generated Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP). Check that the store listing is the genuine MetaMask listing before installing it.
Create a new wallet
- Open the newly installed MetaMask extension or app.
- Choose Create a new wallet when prompted. A fresh installation may also offer an option to access an existing wallet; do not choose that if you are setting up a new one.
- Follow the on-screen prompts, then select an access method offered for your device. MetaMask’s creation guide describes SRP-based setup and, for Extension, social login with Google, Apple, or Telegram. Labels and available methods can change, so follow the current prompts on your device rather than assuming every option appears everywhere.
Choose how you will access and recover the wallet
The setup options place different recovery responsibilities on you. Neither removes the need to protect credentials.

MetaMask describes encrypted key sharding for the social-login flow. That changes how access is managed, but it does not make the social account or password unimportant. If you lose access to the linked account or forget the MetaMask password, the combination required by the guide may not be available.
If you choose Secret Recovery Phrase access
Record the phrase accurately
MetaMask’s setup guidance says the SRP consists of 12 English words. Write them down in English, in the displayed order, and keep the record somewhere secure and offline. Do not translate the words, photograph or upload them, or store them in cloud services or other internet-connected services.

Keep the phrase private
The SRP controls the wallet and its derived accounts. Anyone who obtains it can take control. MetaMask says it cannot recover an SRP-based wallet if the phrase is lost; its help center warns, “If you lose your SRP, or someone else gains access to it, MetaMask cannot recover your wallet, and you will lose control of all of those assets.”
A physical backup medium can be one way to keep a phrase offline, but MetaMask’s guidance does not prescribe a particular product. Whatever method you use, do not enter the phrase into a website or give it to a merchant, support agent, or anyone else.

Protect credentials and avoid recovery scams
- Never disclose your SRP or private keys. MetaMask says it will not ask you to share them, including through someone claiming to be support.
- Be wary of unexpected requests to enter the phrase. MetaMask identifies confirming it during initial setup and entering it when restoring a wallet as legitimate situations. A request from an unrelated website or supposed support agent is a warning sign.
- Understand the password’s role. With SRP access, the password unlocks MetaMask on that device; the SRP is what restores the wallet. For social login, MetaMask says both the linked social account and MetaMask password are needed.
Finish setup and keep a recovery plan
Complete any remaining prompts in MetaMask. Before relying on the wallet, make sure you know which access method you chose and where the required recovery credentials are kept. If you selected SRP access, verify that your offline record is legible and stored securely without exposing it to a camera, website, cloud service, or other person. If you selected social login, maintain access to the linked account and protect the MetaMask password.
