A Mac Studio can drive a 4K gaming display, but the refresh rate you can select depends on the exact chip generation, the number of active displays, the monitor input, and the cable path. Identify your Mac Studio first, then match the monitor and direct connection to a mode that all three support. A 4K/240 Hz output specification describes the display signal ceiling—not the frame rate a game will render.
What you need before connecting anything
Prepare these four pieces of information before buying a monitor or cable:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your exact Mac Studio model: open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac to record the chip (such as M5 Max or M5 Ultra) and model year.
- The display’s real 4K modes: check which refresh rates it supports at 3840 × 2160 on each input. A monitor’s headline maximum may apply only to a lower resolution or to one particular input.
- The connection type: note whether you will use the built-in HDMI port, Thunderbolt/USB-C, DisplayPort through a compatible connection, or a dock. The Mac, input, cable and any adapter must all support the selected mode.
- Your display count: maximum resolution and refresh rate can change when other monitors are active. A single-display figure must not be applied automatically to a multi-display desk.
Apple’s current display documentation covers M5 Max and M5 Ultra and warns that earlier Mac Studio generations have different specifications. Treat the model-specific table as the authority for your machine rather than assuming every Mac Studio has the same 4K limit.
How much 4K refresh rate can a Mac Studio output?
Apple’s published limits vary by model and configuration. The following summary reflects the configurations identified in Apple’s current technical specifications and connection guidance; it is a display-output limit, not a gaming-performance promise.

| Mac Studio configuration | Display capability described by Apple | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| M5 Max, specified single-display configuration | Up to 4K at 240 Hz | Applies to the listed configuration; adding displays changes the allowable combinations. |
| M5 Max, five-display arrangement | Four specified Thunderbolt displays plus one HDMI display up to 5K at 60 Hz | The five-display arrangement is not the same as a single 4K/240 Hz display setup. |
| M5 Ultra, specified configurations | Up to four displays at 4K/240 Hz, or up to eight displays at lower specified rates | Use Apple’s model table for the exact mix of ports, resolutions and refresh rates. |
| Mac Studio introduced in 2023 or later, HDMI connection | Up to 4K at 240 Hz in Apple’s HDMI overview | Apple excludes adapters at the top listed HDMI resolutions and refresh rates. |
| Earlier Mac Studio generations | Lower or otherwise different limits | The exact ceiling is model-specific; check the technical specifications for your chip and year. |
These figures answer “what signal can the Mac send?” They do not answer “how many frames per second will my game produce?” Rendering rate depends on the game’s engine, graphics settings, resolution scaling, drivers, thermals and the particular chip. No universal Mac Studio 4K frame-rate figure is established by the official material used here.
Choose a 4K gaming monitor that matches the Mac
Verify 3840 × 2160 refresh modes
Look for a monitor that explicitly lists its refresh rate at 3840 × 2160 on the input you plan to use. For example, a display advertised as 240 Hz may provide that rate only over one HDMI or DisplayPort input, while another input may be limited to 60 or 120 Hz. Read the manual’s timing table, not just the product headline.
Check HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C inputs
Match the monitor’s physical input to a port and cable path the Mac Studio supports. Built-in HDMI is the most direct route for an HDMI monitor. A USB-C or Thunderbolt display can use a compatible Thunderbolt/USB-C cable. A monitor with DisplayPort may require a USB-C/DisplayPort cable or adapter whose specifications explicitly cover your target resolution and refresh rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDecide whether you need VRR and HDR
Apple lists variable refresh rate (VRR) and high dynamic range (HDR) support in the current M5 Max specifications. The monitor, selected input, cable path and game must also support the intended VRR or HDR mode. Support on the Mac alone does not activate a feature that the display or connection cannot carry.

Account for multiple displays
If you keep a second monitor, television or capture device connected, consult the Mac Studio’s multi-display table before selecting a 4K/240 Hz target. The M5 Max example above shows why: its five-display arrangement includes a 5K/60 Hz HDMI display alongside four specified Thunderbolt displays, rather than five displays all running at the single-display maximum.
Connect the monitor for the target mode
- Choose the Mac’s port. Use the built-in HDMI port for an HDMI display when the model specification lists the mode you want. Use a Thunderbolt/USB-C port for a display connection that Apple lists as supported.
- Use a cable rated for the mode. Confirm that the cable documentation covers 3840 × 2160 at your target refresh rate, plus HDR or VRR if required. A cable that works at 4K/60 may not work at 4K/240.
- Connect directly for HDMI 4K/240 Hz. Apple says adapters are not supported for HDMI at 4K/240 Hz. Do not put a dock, hub or HDMI adapter between the Mac’s HDMI port and the monitor when targeting that mode.
- Select the matching input on the monitor. Use the monitor’s on-screen menu to choose the HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C input carrying the Mac signal. Some displays have a bandwidth setting that must be enabled for their highest refresh rate.
- Power-cycle if the signal is not detected. Turn the monitor off and on, then restart the Mac if necessary. A fresh link negotiation can reveal a mode that was unavailable immediately after changing cables or inputs.
For any arrangement involving an adapter or dock, check the exact Mac model, adapter specification and monitor manual together. The fact that a connector physically fits does not establish that it can carry 4K at the desired rate.
Set 4K resolution and refresh rate in macOS
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Displays in the sidebar, then select the connected monitor.
- Choose a resolution that reports 3840 × 2160, or use the available scaled options and open the detailed resolution choices if macOS presents them.
- Set Refresh Rate to the highest value that the Mac, cable path and monitor all support. If you want 240 Hz, the option must be available specifically at 3840 × 2160 rather than at a lower resolution.
- Enable HDR in the display settings only when the monitor and connection support it and you want HDR in games. HDR can change how the desktop and game appear, so verify the monitor’s picture mode as well.
If the expected rate is missing, do not infer that the Mac is too slow. First recheck the model table, active display count, monitor input, cable rating and any adapter or dock. Switch to a direct connection and test again. A monitor can also expose a lower rate when its high-bandwidth mode is disabled in its own menu.

Turn on Game Mode when your game qualifies
Game Mode is available on Apple silicon Macs running macOS Sonoma 14 or later when the game supports macOS full-screen mode. Apple Support describes it as giving the game the highest-priority access to the CPU and GPU while lowering access for background tasks. Apple also documents doubled Bluetooth sampling for supported wireless accessories.

Enable it during play
- Update macOS to Sonoma 14 or a later release and launch a Mac game on an Apple silicon Mac Studio.
- Switch the game to its macOS full-screen mode. Windowed or borderless modes may not satisfy the requirement.
- Open the macOS Game menu or Game Overlay and check the Game Mode control.
- Leave Game Mode enabled for the session if you want the documented CPU, GPU and Bluetooth prioritization.
Game Mode is an operating-system scheduling feature, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. It cannot make a game that lacks a Mac version run, and it cannot turn a 4K/60-capable game into a 4K/240-capable one.
Check whether each game supports macOS
Prefer a native Mac release
Before tuning graphics, verify that the game has an official macOS version and that its published requirements include your macOS release and Apple silicon configuration. A native release generally provides the clearest path to full-screen mode, controller support and graphics settings.
Treat Windows compatibility as a separate question
Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit is developer-facing tooling for evaluating compatibility and porting games to Apple platforms. Its existence does not constitute a consumer compatibility list and does not show that a particular Windows title will install, launch or perform acceptably on your Mac Studio. Check the game’s own macOS support information and current community reports for the exact title.
Check launchers, anti-cheat and peripherals
Even when a game has a Mac build, its launcher, multiplayer anti-cheat system, mod framework or required peripheral may not support macOS. Confirm those dependencies before buying a game solely for 4K play. A title that starts successfully is not necessarily a title that supports online play or every controller feature.

Tune the game for a stable 4K experience
- Start at native 3840 × 2160. Use the game’s own resolution control and select full-screen mode if available.
- Choose a sensible refresh target. If the game cannot sustain the monitor’s maximum rate, select a lower refresh rate or frame-rate cap that produces steadier frame pacing.
- Adjust expensive settings first. Lower ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects and reflection quality before reducing the output resolution if maintaining a sharp 4K image matters to you.
- Use the game’s scaling options. Dynamic resolution or an upscaling mode can reduce rendering load while keeping a 4K output signal. The quality and availability of these options are title-specific.
- Measure the actual result. Use the game’s frame-time or frame-rate overlay when provided, and compare settings in the same scene. Do not use the Mac’s 4K/240 Hz display specification as a performance benchmark.
Official Apple material does not publish title-by-title Mac Studio 4K frame rates. For a purchasing or settings decision, use a benchmark for the exact chip, game version, resolution and graphics preset rather than extrapolating from the display-output ceiling.
Troubleshoot missing 4K or high refresh rates
The display appears, but 240 Hz is not offered
- Confirm that the Mac Studio model and active-display arrangement list 4K/240 Hz.
- Confirm that the monitor supports 240 Hz at 3840 × 2160 on the selected input.
- Remove the adapter, dock or hub and connect HDMI directly if you are targeting HDMI 4K/240 Hz.
- Replace the cable with one whose specifications cover the mode.
- Enable the monitor’s high-bandwidth input option, then reopen System Settings > Displays.
4K is available only at 60 Hz
This commonly indicates an input, cable or intermediate-device limit rather than a game setting. Test another monitor input, a direct connection and a cable rated for a higher bandwidth. Also check whether another active display forces a lower combination on your Mac Studio model.
HDR or VRR is missing
Verify the feature in the monitor’s manual for the selected input, enable the monitor’s relevant picture or gaming mode, and confirm that the cable and any adapter support it. Apple listing VRR or HDR support for the Mac does not override a display-side limitation.
Recommended Free Tools
The game will not enter Game Mode
Check that the Mac uses Apple silicon, macOS is Sonoma 14 or later, and the game is running in macOS full-screen mode. A windowed session or a game without the required full-screen support will not meet Apple’s stated conditions.
A Windows game does not launch
Do not treat Game Porting Toolkit as a consumer compatibility promise. Recheck whether the publisher offers a Mac version, whether the launcher and anti-cheat support macOS, and whether the title’s current requirements match your system.
A practical configuration checklist
- Record the Mac Studio chip and model year in About This Mac.
- Count every active display before applying a single-display refresh-rate figure.
- Choose a monitor that lists 3840 × 2160 at the refresh rate you want on the exact input you will use.
- Confirm VRR and HDR on both the monitor and the Mac connection if those features matter to you.
- Use a direct HDMI connection for Apple-documented HDMI 4K/240 Hz; do not insert an adapter.
- Set the mode under System Settings > Displays and verify the refresh rate at 3840 × 2160.
- Run eligible games in macOS full-screen mode on Apple silicon with macOS Sonoma 14 or later to use Game Mode.
- Verify Mac support title by title; developer porting tools do not prove consumer compatibility.
- Tune graphics and measure frame pacing in the game itself. A 4K/240 Hz signal is not a 240-fps guarantee.
Can a Mac Studio run games in 4K?
Yes, a Mac Studio can output a 4K signal, and current M5 Max and M5 Ultra documentation includes configurations reaching 4K/240 Hz. Whether a particular game renders smoothly at 4K depends on the title and settings, and whether it runs at all depends on Mac compatibility. Set up the display path first, then judge performance with measurements from the exact game.
