This can recover from some process failures, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: YouTube acceptance, network stability, valid media, and operator monitoring still matter.
How the setup works
The VPS stores your video and audio, FFmpeg sends a live feed to YouTube, and a systemd service launches FFmpeg at boot and can restart it after certain failures. YouTube’s Live Control Room supplies the current ingest endpoint and stream key. This is a practical implementation pattern, not an official YouTube recipe or a tested availability guarantee.

Use a single pre-rendered video with its rain and thunder audio embedded if possible. It is easier to keep synchronized than separate looping audio and video sources. Separate sources can drift or reach their loop boundaries at different times, so test transitions and audio continuity before broadcasting.
Choose the VPS and media
Check sustained outbound capacity
Your VPS must sustain the selected video bitrate plus audio and operational headroom. YouTube advises choosing a quality that the internet connection can reliably support and testing upload capacity. A continuous stream also uses bandwidth continuously, so check the provider’s outbound traffic allowance, billing, and network policies before choosing a plan.

There is no universally correct VPS size established here. Compare providers using sustained outbound bandwidth, bandwidth charges or limits, CPU capacity if you will transcode, disk space for media, network route, and restart and monitoring options. Do not select a plan based on a short burst-speed figure alone.
Prepare media you have rights to use
Use rain and thunder recordings, music (if any), and visuals that you have the right to stream and monetize. A “royalty-free” or public-domain label alone does not establish that a particular file is safe for your intended use; check the actual licence and retain its documentation. YouTube may still issue a copyright claim or other restriction based on the material.

Inspect the files for their video and audio streams, codec, resolution, frame rate, and duration. A compatible pre-encoded file may be sent without re-encoding, which can reduce CPU use, but compatibility depends on the file and installed FFmpeg build. If the inputs need conversion or you want to change their output settings, the VPS must have enough CPU for real-time encoding.
Set YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data through Google’s servers. Use it when your FFmpeg build and the ingest endpoint support it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not measurements of VPS performance. YouTube also lists frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in its advanced audio settings. Account for audio and headroom when checking whether the server’s sustained upload capacity can carry your chosen output.
Choose a codec and frame rate for your actual media
H.264 may be the practical choice when compatibility is a priority; AV1 or H.265 have lower YouTube-recommended video bitrates in the settings above, but require compatible encoding support in your FFmpeg build and a suitable ingest path. The FFmpeg documentation explains that encoder availability depends on how the software was built; for example, wrappers such as libx264 require corresponding build support. Check the installed build rather than assuming an encoder is present: FFmpeg documentation.

Do not choose a bitrate in isolation. Match the output resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR target, keyframe interval, and audio settings to the media and the VPS connection. A rain scene may have little visual movement, but it still needs a stable live output that meets the chosen settings.
Install FFmpeg and prepare the stream key
- Provision a Linux VPS. Use Ubuntu or another supported Linux distribution, allow enough disk for your media, and account for CPU use if encoding. Confirm the provider’s continuous outbound bandwidth terms.
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted distribution source. Check that the installed build includes the video and audio encoders you intend to use. The exact installation command depends on the distribution and repository you choose.
- Upload and inspect your media. Verify that the intended video and audio streams are present and playable. Test the beginning and end of the loop, particularly if audio and video are separate.
- Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, configure a broadcast and obtain its current ingestion endpoint and stream key. The labels and available options may change, so use the values shown in your account.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Put it in a protected configuration or environment file readable only by the dedicated service account. Do not commit it to a public repository, paste it into public scripts, or expose it in logs. A community example also warns against exposing the key: its Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and systemd operations notes.
Test a short FFmpeg broadcast
There is no single FFmpeg command that is safe to copy for every media file and build. Input formats, whether you are stream-copying or transcoding, encoder availability, and YouTube’s current ingest settings all matter. Configure FFmpeg to send your chosen media to the current YouTube endpoint using the protected key, and use the matching codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR target, keyframe interval, and audio settings from the encoder guidance.

- Start with a short private or unlisted test broadcast.
- Watch the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm that both picture and sound arrive, and check the displayed stream health and messages.
- Listen through a loop boundary. Check that rain and thunder audio continues cleanly, stays synchronized, and does not go silent when the file repeats.
- Test a reconnect by stopping and restarting the FFmpeg process, and observe whether YouTube accepts the new connection and resumes the broadcast as expected.
- Adjust the output if YouTube reports problems or if the VPS cannot sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement before going live and monitoring stream health and messages.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
After the test works, configure a systemd unit to run FFmpeg as a dedicated, unprivileged user, with an explicit working directory and protected access to the stream key. Set a restart policy for process failures, then enable the unit at boot. The community example linked above demonstrates one Ubuntu/FFmpeg/systemd arrangement; treat it as an example, not a universal configuration.

Check the service with systemctl status and review its journal logs. Then verify in YouTube Studio that the platform actually sees the feed. A service reporting “running” only means the local process is active; it does not prove YouTube is accepting the stream or that viewers are receiving healthy audio and video.
Monitor and recover failures
systemd can restart FFmpeg after some process exits, but it cannot correct an invalid stream key, unsupported media, a full disk, inadequate CPU, a network outage, or a YouTube-side interruption. Set up alerts and an operator procedure for stream loss, low disk, high CPU, network problems, and YouTube warnings. For stronger monitoring, periodically verify both local FFmpeg output and the stream state observed by YouTube, and define who will act on an alert.
- Service stopped or repeatedly restarting: inspect
systemctl statusand the journal for FFmpeg errors, missing files, permissions, or encoder problems. - YouTube does not accept the feed: check the current endpoint and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm the protocol and codec are supported, and examine YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Unstable or degraded stream health: compare the outgoing bitrate with sustained VPS upload capacity, including audio and headroom; lower the output quality if needed.
- Audio drops, drifts, or clicks at the loop point: test the source durations and boundary behavior. Prefer a single file with embedded audio if separate loops will not remain synchronized.
- High CPU or encoding stalls: check whether FFmpeg is transcoding and whether the VPS can handle the selected codec, frame rate, and resolution. A compatible pre-encoded source may avoid real-time encoding work.
No restart policy makes a stream “never offline.” Only measured operations and a defined service level could support a specific availability claim. Also, YouTube’s archive guidance should be checked directly before relying on a 24/7 broadcast being saved; no duration or retention limit is assumed here.
