Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can use GStreamer on Ubuntu 24.04 to decode a local video, encode it for YouTube Live, mux it as FLV, and send it to YouTube over RTMP or the recommended secure RTMPS. The important catch: a normal file pipeline ends when the file reaches end-of-stream (EOS). GStreamer’s command-line tool does not provide a documented universal loop option for arbitrary files, so a continuous broadcast needs application or controller logic to restart or seek the source while managing the output pipeline.
What you need before building the pipeline
- Ubuntu 24.04 with GStreamer tools and plugins for your file’s decoder, the encoder you choose, FLV muxing, and RTMP(S) output.
- A YouTube encoder-based live stream, its current ingest URL, and its stream key from Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection with enough spare capacity for the chosen bitrate.
- An application or controller that handles EOS and restarts or seeks the source for a continuous loop.
Ubuntu Noble’s manpage lists gstreamer1.0-tools version 1.24.2-1ubuntu0.1. That identifies the documented command-line tools package; it does not mean the decoders, encoders, muxer, or sink you need are already installed. Plugin availability depends on the installed packages and repositories, so inspect the target machine rather than assuming a package set.

Inspect the installed elements
Use gst-inspect-1.0 to check whether the relevant elements are available. At minimum, inspect the decoder appropriate to your input, your chosen video encoder (for example, x264enc if present), an AAC audio encoder if needed, flvmux, and rtmpsink. The RTMP sink is part of GStreamer’s Bad Plug-ins. A failed element lookup is a reason to check local plugin installation and repository configuration before debugging the pipeline itself.
Create the YouTube Live ingest
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based stream.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the actual endpoint shown there, not a hostname copied from an example.
- Choose the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube offers it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or commit a real key in a public script. Supply it through a private configuration mechanism suitable for your application.
First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help. Allow for that delay before treating an unavailable live session as a GStreamer failure.

Understand the output pipeline
The conceptual chain is:
local file → decode → normalize/convert → encode video + audio → flvmux → rtmpsink
GStreamer’s documented RTMP pattern muxes encoded media into FLV and sends that stream to rtmpsink, which accepts video/x-flv. Decoding can use elements such as decodebin or uridecodebin3 for supported media. The specific decoder, converters, encoders, caps, and properties depend on the file and the elements installed on your Ubuntu system; inspect them locally and construct a pipeline appropriate to that input.

The GStreamer reference’s example demonstrates the mux-and-sink pattern, but uses a legacy FLV encoder and a localhost RTMP endpoint. It is not a current, ready-to-run YouTube command. YouTube’s ingest requirements determine the output codec and settings, while Live Control Room supplies the correct destination URL and key.
Do not mistake a file pipeline for a loop
A finite source reaches EOS. Neither rtmpsink nor the documented gst-launch-1.0 options make that source repeat automatically; gst-launch-1.0 --loop is not a documented option. The official GStreamer pages reviewed document pipeline building blocks, not a universal one-line command that loops arbitrary decoded files while preserving one YouTube ingest session.

For a continuous broadcast, use an application or controller that detects EOS and seeks or restarts the source while retaining or deliberately managing the output pipeline. GStreamer recommends using its API for applications and describes gst-launch-1.0 primarily as a debugging tool. A finite playlist can also be scheduled by application logic, but seamless transitions and a no-gap handoff are not guaranteed by a generic built-in command. Validate behavior with your media and implementation, especially at file and playlist boundaries.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoding settings
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). Match resolution and bitrate to the available upload capacity and the encoder’s capabilities. The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s current encoder guidance, not independent performance measurements:

| Incoming video | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Select a stable bitrate with headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full measured upload rate. A conservative resolution and bitrate are preferable to a higher-quality configuration that the connection or encoder cannot sustain.

RTMPS versus HLS
For the usual RTMP-based setup, use the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room if available; RTMPS encrypts the connection, while an ordinary RTMP URL is not the same protocol setting. YouTube’s endpoint for the specific stream is authoritative.
HLS is a different ingest design, not a drop-in replacement for rtmpsink. YouTube documents it as an option for HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. It requires transport-stream (TS) segments, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS has higher latency than RTMP, so use it only when its compatibility benefits justify the additional output design and delay.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- GStreamer says an element is missing: Check the exact element with
gst-inspect-1.0. Install or enable the appropriate plugin for the decoder, encoder, muxer, or sink; the tools package alone does not guarantee those elements. - The pipeline links fail or caps do not negotiate: Confirm the selected decoder and encoder support the media formats and caps being connected. Add the required conversion or normalization elements and inspect the installed element properties rather than copying properties from an unrelated example.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify that the URL and key belong to the current Live Control Room stream and that the URL uses the intended protocol. For SSL connection problems, YouTube advises checking both protocol and server; port 443 may be specified explicitly when applicable. Prefer the displayed endpoint over a guessed hostname or port.
- The stream stops when the clip finishes: That is normal EOS behavior for a finite source. Add application/controller logic to seek or restart the source and manage the output pipeline; the RTMP sink does not loop the media.
- Video arrives but audio is absent or invalid: Check that the file has an audio stream, that the selected encoder produces AAC or MP3, and that audio is included in the muxed output. Verify both audio and motion in a representative test.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or instability: Reduce resolution or bitrate, ensure CBR, check that keyframes are no more than four seconds apart, and leave upload headroom. Monitor Live Control Room messages while testing with motion and audio similar to the intended program.
- HDR or a needed codec is not available through RTMP: Consider YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements instead, accounting for segmented TS delivery and higher latency.
Keep the stream running without a home computer
If you want to build and operate the GStreamer application yourself, the pipeline and EOS behavior above are the pieces to implement and validate. If you would rather have an uploaded video run continuously without keeping Ubuntu online, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, not a camera feed.
Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
