To use a green screen in OBS, place it behind you so it fills the camera’s background, add your webcam as a Video Capture Source, then apply the source’s Chroma Key filter. Adjust the preview until the screen disappears without cutting into your outline. Lighting and framing matter, but there is no one camera distance or filter value that works for every room and webcam.
What you need
- A green screen backdrop, positioned where your webcam sees the background. It can be a fixed backdrop or a collapsible screen suited to your space and mounting options.
- A webcam and OBS Studio.
- Lighting that lets the webcam produce a clear, consistent image. Logitech notes that lighting affects webcam image quality, particularly for a 720p/60fps stream; that does not establish a universal lighting layout for green-screen keying. See Logitech’s C922 setup guidance.
A stand or mounting hardware is optional if you do not already have a suitable way to position the backdrop. The right screen size, material, and mounting method depend on your room and camera framing; available product guidance does not establish one best specification.

Set up the physical screen and camera
- Place the screen behind you in the area the camera captures. Frame the shot so the intended background is covered; check the preview for uncovered edges.
- Set up your lighting and inspect the webcam image. Make adjustments based on what the camera shows rather than assuming room lighting will be consistent enough.
- In OBS, add the webcam as a Video Capture Source. OBS allows the source to be positioned and resized in the scene. See OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide.
Remove the green screen in OBS
- Open the webcam source’s filters in OBS.
- Add the Chroma Key filter. OBS describes it as removing a selected color and identifies green-screen removal as a use case. The filter’s controls include key color type, similarity, smoothness, key color spill reduction, opacity, contrast, and brightness. See OBS’s Chroma Key Filter guide.
- Check the scene preview. Start with the default green key color if it matches your screen, then adjust the controls while watching your outline and any remaining green.
- Refine similarity carefully: increasing it removes a wider range of colors, but can also erase parts of you or objects you intend to keep. Smoothness changes the softness of the removed edges. Spill reduction addresses leftover key color around your outline. Use contrast, brightness, and opacity only as needed to improve the composed image.
- Review the full scene before going live, including your hair, shoulders, and any objects near the frame edges. There are no universally correct filter values; use your own preview to find a clean result.
Use software background replacement instead
If you do not want a physical screen, NVIDIA Broadcast offers background removal, replacement, and blur through a virtual camera workflow. Its product page lists Windows 10 64-bit, a GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher GPU, at least 8 GB RAM, and recommends an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher, alongside specified NVIDIA driver families. Requirements can change, so check NVIDIA’s current Broadcast page before installing or buying hardware.

In this path, Broadcast supplies the background effect through its virtual camera; it is different from applying OBS’s Chroma Key filter to a physical green screen. Choose the approach that fits your setup
- Choose a physical screen with OBS keying if you have room to position a backdrop and want to adjust the key directly in OBS.
- Consider NVIDIA Broadcast if you prefer a software background effect and your Windows system meets its current compatibility requirements.
- Consider webcam lighting or a backdrop stand only if needed. Lighting can affect image quality; a stand is useful only when your room lacks another suitable mounting option. No single light placement or accessory is required by the cited setup instructions.
Neither approach is established as universally better. Consider the space you have, whether you can control what appears behind you, your hardware, and whether you prefer a physical backdrop or a virtual camera effect.
Troubleshoot common green-screen problems
Green remains visible
Check that Chroma Key is applied to the webcam source and that the selected key color matches the screen. Inspect framing for uncovered background areas, then adjust similarity in the preview.

Parts of your outline disappear
Similarity may be removing colors beyond the screen. Reduce it and check whether the lost edges return. Review the screen and webcam image as well; the filter operates on the image the camera supplies.

Use smoothness to change edge softness and spill reduction to target residual key color around your outline. Make changes while watching the preview, since the right balance depends on the shot.

The background effect does not appear in OBS
For OBS keying, confirm the Chroma Key filter is on the webcam source. For NVIDIA Broadcast, select the NVIDIA Broadcast virtual camera as the Video Capture Source and verify that the device is available in OBS.
The webcam image looks inconsistent
Check the lighting and inspect the camera preview. Logitech’s C922 guidance identifies lighting as important to image quality, particularly at 720p/60fps; it does not prescribe a universal green-screen lighting arrangement.
