To set up a Google Pixel Watch 5, pair it with a compatible Android phone in the Google Pixel Watch app, then choose a backup from an older Google Pixel Watch if you want to restore its data. If you are keeping the same watch but changing phones, use Transfer Watch instead; that is a different process.
Before you start
- Use a phone running Android 12.0 or newer. Google says Pixel Watch 5 works with most phones that meet this requirement; setup also requires the Google Pixel Watch app and a Google Account. See Google’s Pixel Watch 5 specifications.
- Charge the watch and phone, turn on Bluetooth, allow location access, and connect the phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Update the phone and Pixel Watch app if updates are available. Google’s setup guide recommends these preparations.
- If you are replacing an older Google Pixel Watch, start its backup well ahead of setup. Google says backup can take up to a few days. Put the old watch on its charger, connect it to Wi-Fi, then in the Pixel Watch app open Google > Backup > Turn on. See Google’s transfer and backup guidance.
Set up your Pixel Watch 5
- Turn on the watch and place it near your Android phone with Bluetooth enabled.
- If a Fast Pair prompt appears, follow it. Otherwise, open the Google Pixel Watch app and start setup, then select your watch when it appears.
- Check that the pairing code on the phone matches the code on the watch. Pair only if they match. If they do not, restart and try pairing again.
- Sign in to your Google Account, accept the terms, and follow the on-screen prompts.
- When asked, choose a backup from your old Google Pixel Watch to restore it, or select Don’t restore to set up as new. Google’s setup instructions describe restore as optional. Google’s Pixel Watch 5 FAQ says Backup and Restore with Google One can restore data from a previous Pixel Watch.
- Choose your wrist and crown orientation, then finish any remaining prompts. Depending on your model, region, and account, setup may also offer Google Health, LTE, safety features, Gemini, screen lock, Wallet, and app installation.
Choose the right transfer process
The right path depends on whether you are replacing the watch or only changing its phone connection.

| What is changing? | Use this process | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Old Google Pixel Watch to a new Pixel Watch 5 | Restore a backup during Pixel Watch 5 setup | Restores a prior Pixel Watch backup. Google says it can include watch data, settings, watch faces, messages, alarms, and more. |
| The same Pixel Watch 5, paired with a new phone | Transfer Watch in Settings on the watch or in the Pixel Watch app | Moves the existing watch’s connection to the new phone; it is not the restore process for setting up a replacement watch. |
| A watch from another brand to a Pixel Watch 5 | Set up the Pixel Watch 5 without assuming a Pixel Watch backup will restore | The documented Backup and Restore flow covers data from an older Google Pixel Watch. The cited guidance does not establish that it imports a full backup from another watch brand. |
Moving the same watch to a new phone
On the Pixel Watch 5, open Settings and choose Transfer Watch, or start the transfer from the Pixel Watch app. Then open the app on the new phone, pair the watch, confirm that the codes match, and follow the prompts to complete the transfer. Google says the watch is unpaired from the old phone only after the transfer succeeds. The Watch 5 FAQ gives the current “Transfer Watch” label; Google’s general help page describes the broader transfer flow and labels its instructions as requiring Wear OS 4, so app menus may differ from older documentation.

Using LTE
For an LTE Pixel Watch 5, Google says the watch can share the phone number after activation with a compatible operator, and the watch and phone must use the same operator. Carrier, plan, and regional activation steps vary; confirm them with your operator. See the Pixel Watch 5 product FAQ.

If setup or pairing fails
- Charge both devices and install available software updates. Confirm Bluetooth, location, and Wi-Fi or mobile data are enabled, and keep the phone close to the watch. For Fast Pair, Google specifies a distance of 0.5 m (1.6 ft) or less.
- Restart the watch: hold the crown for three seconds, select Restart, and retry after it has fully restarted.
- If pairing codes do not match, do not approve the pairing. Restart the devices and try again.
- Use a factory reset only if simpler troubleshooting fails. Google warns that a reset erases apps, settings, and data, so back up first if possible. The generic reset routes are Settings > Disconnect & reset on the watch, or System > Reset and unpair watch in the app. Menu wording can vary by software version. See Google’s pairing troubleshooting guidance.
