Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSet up a gaming mouse by choosing a controllable DPI, selecting a stable polling rate supported by your device, assigning only useful extra buttons, and testing the profile in the game you play. There is no universally best sensitivity or report rate: the mouse, its software, your operating system, and your preference all matter.
1. Find the right software for your exact mouse
Start with the mouse maker’s support or download page and confirm the software supports your specific model. Menus and features vary even among mice from the same brand, so do not assume one app or set of instructions applies to every device.

For example, Logitech’s G PRO setup guide describes configuration in Logitech Gaming Software, including automatic game detection and an On-Board Memory mode. Those steps and features are specific to the documented G PRO setup.
2. Choose a DPI you can control
DPI means “dots per inch.” In mouse settings, it describes how far the pointer moves for a given physical movement: a higher DPI makes the pointer move farther and feel faster. It does not determine one ideal sensitivity for every player or game. Logitech’s gaming mouse guide explains the term and uses 1,000 reports per second as an example of a 1,000 Hz polling rate.

- The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere
- Begin with one DPI level that feels manageable in both the desktop menus and your game.
- If your software offers several DPI stages, remove the ones you do not use or disable DPI cycling if you keep changing sensitivity by accident.
- Adjust DPI in small steps. Keep the game’s sensitivity unchanged while you assess each change so you can tell which setting affected the feel.
The G PRO guide, for example, documents up to five configurable DPI levels. Other models may offer a different number or range.
3. Set the polling rate
Polling rate—also called report rate—is how often the mouse reports its position to the computer. A rate of 1,000 reports per second corresponds to a nominal 1 millisecond between reports; it does not, by itself, promise a noticeable gameplay improvement for every player or PC.

In its G PRO guidance, Logitech lists 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 reports per second, and says, “TIP: For most PCs, a report rate of 500 is recommended.” This is manufacturer guidance for that device and software guide, not a universal benchmark or requirement. Choose a rate your mouse supports; if a higher rate is unstable in your setup or offers no useful difference to you, try a lower supported option.
4. Assign extra buttons to actions you actually use
Keep primary click and scroll-wheel functions intact, then map extra buttons to convenient actions that the game accepts—for example, push-to-talk or a frequently used command. Available assignments depend on the mouse, its software, the game, and the game’s rules. Check those rules before setting up macros.

Windows recognizes two common side-button inputs as XBUTTON1 and XBUTTON2; these are often used for browser back and forward. That standard input behavior does not mean every mouse or game offers the same remapping options. See Microsoft’s mouse input documentation for the Windows input names.
Test each new assignment in the game. If a button is hard to reach or you trigger it unintentionally, choose a different command or leave it unassigned.

5. Save a game profile or use onboard memory
If your mouse software supports automatic game detection, you can use separate profiles for different games. Otherwise, save a stable configuration as the software allows. Some mice also support onboard memory, which stores settings on the mouse rather than relying on the software profile on one computer. Logitech’s G PRO documentation describes both automatic game detection and an On-Board Memory mode in which settings are written directly to the mouse.

Windows pointer speed is separate from the mouse’s DPI setting. Logitech’s G PRO guide advises leaving acceleration off for gaming accuracy while acknowledging that preference varies; treat that as the vendor’s recommendation, not a rule for every player.
7. Test changes one at a time
Try the configuration in the actual game using the same in-game sensitivity and movement space. If aiming or navigation feels too fast, lower DPI or the game’s sensitivity. Change one setting at a time, then keep the adjustment only if it makes control more comfortable. This is a practical way to evaluate the available controls, not a guarantee of a particular performance result.
