Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and S12+ on September 30, 2026, with availability set to begin October 7 in select markets. That date is in the future as of October 3, 2026, so check local availability and configurations before planning a purchase.

Choose the model around your work surface
Samsung’s published specifications point to a straightforward trade-off: the Ultra has the larger display and higher maximum onboard storage, while the S12+ is lighter and easier to carry. Both models use the MediaTek Dimensity 9500, include an S Pen, support 45 W charging, and accept microSD cards up to 2 TB. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance test results.

Both models support microSD expansion up to 2 TB, according to Samsung’s September 30, 2026 announcement. Choose internal storage for files and apps you want on the device without a card; consider expansion if your workflow involves keeping large project files locally. No authoritative price comparison is established here, so compare the configurations and local prices available in your market.

Arrange your core apps with Multi Window
Samsung says the S12 display can be divided into up to three sections. A useful starting layout is reference material or a browser in one section, your active work app in another, and Samsung Notes in the third. For a meeting, that might mean an agenda, the video or document you are discussing, and a notes page; for research, it could be a source, a draft, and notes.
Keep only the apps that serve the task in the layout. Three visible sections can reduce app switching, but the available space in each depends on the display and the content you are viewing. The larger Ultra gives more physical screen area for this approach; the S12+ trades some workspace for lower carrying weight.

Use the included S Pen for capture and annotation
Samsung describes the included S Pen as a tool for note-taking, annotating, and sketching. Use it to mark up a document, jot down decisions during a call, or capture an idea in Samsung Notes without treating a separate stylus purchase as a default setup cost.

Use DeX when a session benefits from a desktop-style workspace
Samsung describes DeX as a PC-like environment for opening, resizing, and arranging multiple apps. It can be useful for longer sessions in which you want several work windows visible at once. An external keyboard and pointer can make that arrangement more comfortable if your work involves sustained typing or precise cursor use.
DeX is a tablet workspace, not a guarantee that every desktop application, peripheral, or file workflow behaves as it would on a laptop. Test the exact combination of apps and accessories your role needs before depending on it for essential work.

Decide whether an optional keyboard is worthwhile
Samsung US lists the S12-compatible Pro Keyboard and Book Cover Keyboard Slim as accessories sold separately. The Pro Keyboard has a trackpad and Galaxy AI Key according to Samsung’s US product page; the Slim option is the alternative to consider when portability is a higher priority. Check the precise model and local keyboard layout before buying, since accessory details can vary by market.

A keyboard is most useful if you regularly write long documents, answer substantial email, or use DeX for extended work. If your tablet use is mainly reading, meetings, markup, and short notes, the included S Pen may cover more of your day-to-day input needs without an added keyboard.

Plan charging and storage for your actual workload
Both models support 45 W charging, but Samsung says the 45 W adapter is sold separately and recommends Samsung-approved chargers and cables. Confirm compatibility when selecting a charger rather than assuming one is included with the tablet.
For local storage, both models support microSD cards up to 2 TB. A card may suit a workflow that keeps project assets, media, or reference files on the device; it is not necessary for everyone. Samsung also states that the S12 series is eligible for up to seven OS upgrades and security updates. Treat that as Samsung’s stated update commitment, not a guarantee about the timing of a particular update in every market.
Verify role-critical apps before moving work over
Samsung’s launch materials list Photoshop, Notability, Goodnotes, LumaFusion, Clip Studio Paint, and Notion in connection with the devices and related offers. The listed trial periods and benefits vary; some require payment to continue, and availability and terms can differ by region. A name appearing in promotional material is not proof that your exact desktop workflow, subscription, or organization configuration is supported.
- Check whether your essential applications have the tablet version and functions your work requires.
- Test access to work files, cloud services, and any security or sign-in requirements imposed by your organization.
- Confirm that external displays and the peripherals you need work with your intended setup.
- Verify local app availability and offer terms rather than relying on a promotion listed for another region.
Can a Galaxy Tab S12 replace a laptop?
Samsung’s US product page presents the S12 Ultra, Pro Keyboard, and DeX as supporting laptop-like productivity, but also cautions that a laptop may still be required for specialized software. That is the right boundary for a professional decision: a tablet may cover your document, note-taking, communication, and multitasking needs, but do not assume it can run every desktop application or meet every workplace requirement. Samsung’s qualification is on its US Galaxy Tab S12 product page; details there may not apply in other regions.
Before relying on the tablet as your only computer, test the specific applications, file handling, security requirements, external-display needs, and organizational policies that apply to your role. If a core task depends on specialized desktop software, keep access to a suitable computer for that task.
