The supported way to start a FiveM roleplay server in 2026 is to install the official FXServer artifacts, launch the txAdmin panel bundled with FXServer, link a Cfx.re account, create a free server registration key in the Cfx Portal, and deploy a recipe. Once that base server runs, add a framework, database-backed gameplay resources, permissions, moderation, voice rules, and backups before inviting players.
You can self-host on Windows or Linux or use a managed game-server provider. The quickest first installation is the txAdmin recipe flow; it avoids hand-building a configuration while still leaving the server files and settings under your control.

What you need before installing
Prepare these items before opening FXServer:
- A free Cfx.re account.
- A server registration key created in the Cfx Portal.
- A supported Windows or Linux machine, or a managed FiveM hosting plan that supplies FXServer access.
- Enough operating-system access to extract files, open the required network ports, and keep the server process running.
- An archive extractor for the downloaded server artifacts.
- For framework installations that persist characters, inventories, jobs, businesses, or economy data, a compatible MySQL or MariaDB service.
txAdmin is not a separate paid product or resource. It is included with FXServer, so you install the server artifacts and then use the panel that starts with them.

Managed hosting is convenient, but it is not automatically equivalent between providers. Before paying, verify the current artifact channel, CPU and RAM allocation, player-slot limit, DDoS and network policy, automated-backup schedule, database access, support response expectations, data export and migration process, and total recurring cost. Install FXServer artifacts
Download and extract the recommended build
Use the latest recommended build from the official Cfx server-download route. Extract it into a dedicated folder rather than a general Downloads directory. Keeping the server in its own folder makes upgrades, backups, and rollback easier.
If you are deploying for GTAV Enhanced, follow the current artifact naming used by the official guide. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable when that guide calls for it; a missing runtime can prevent the executable from starting even when the archive was extracted correctly.
Start the first boot without an exec argument
Do not add +exec server.cfg on the first launch. txAdmin needs to initialize and display its one-time setup information.

run.shfrom the extracted folder. Make sure the script is executable before launching it. - Watch the console for the local txAdmin address and PIN.
- Open
http://localhost:40120on the host machine, or use the address shown by the console if your host maps the panel differently.
The game endpoint and the txAdmin panel are separate services. Treat them as separate firewall rules and expose only the interfaces needed for your chosen deployment.
Complete the txAdmin setup wizard
Link your Cfx.re account
- Choose Link account in txAdmin.
- Authorize the Cfx.re account in the browser window.
- Create a backup password for the txAdmin profile.
- Accept the Creator Platform and txAdmin license terms.
Keep the backup password in a password manager. Losing access to the account or local txAdmin profile can turn a simple configuration change into a recovery exercise.

Create the initial server profile
- Enter a recognizable server name.
- Choose Popular Recipes.
- Select the CFX Default FiveM template for a basic starting point.
- Keep the suggested data location unless you have a specific storage layout and a backup plan.
- Open the Recipe Deployer.
A recipe is an installation plan that places resources and generates the initial configuration. It is the fastest path for a first server because it supplies a known starting structure instead of asking you to assemble every resource manually.
Create and enter the registration key
- Open the Cfx Portal and choose Create a key.
- Give the key a name that identifies the server or environment.
- Generate the key and copy it exactly.
- Paste it into the txAdmin recipe deployment screen.
- Run the recipe and wait for deployment to finish.
The key is tied to server registration, so do not publish it in screenshots, public repositories, or chat. If a deployment fails, check the key before repeatedly rerunning the recipe.

- Review the generated server configuration after the recipe completes.
- Click Save and Run Server.
- Open the FiveM client and connect to the server address shown by your host or local network.
- Confirm that the server appears, accepts a connection, and creates the expected data folders.
At this stage you have a functioning base server, not a complete roleplay community. Character persistence, jobs, inventory, economy, staff tools, and rules come from the resources and framework you add next.
Understand the basic server configuration
The vanilla setup uses server.cfg to define the registration key and network endpoints. A minimal example is:

Replace the example key with the key generated in the Cfx Portal. The documentation uses port 30120 for both TCP and UDP game traffic and 40120 as the default local txAdmin panel port. These are documented example settings, not a universal firewall policy: a managed host may map ports differently, and a self-hosted machine may need a different available port.

After the first txAdmin setup, a conventional manual launch can use:
FXServer.exe +exec server.cfgOn Linux, use the equivalent run.sh +exec server.cfg invocation. Keep the txAdmin panel port distinct from the game endpoint, restrict panel access to trusted administrators, and open only the TCP and UDP game ports required by your configuration.
Select a roleplay framework deliberately
Cfx describes a framework as “a foundational structure that simplifies the creation of resources for your FiveM server.” In practical terms, it supplies conventions and shared systems that resources can use for characters, jobs, inventory, money, permissions, and persistence.
Popular choices include QBCore, ESX, and Qbox. None is universally best without checking the exact scripts and maintenance status you intend to run. Before committing, compare:
- Resource ecosystem: Are the jobs, businesses, inventory, housing, vehicles, and UI resources you need available for that framework?
- Maintenance activity: Are framework releases, fixes, and dependency updates still arriving at a pace your community can support?
- Database model: Which tables, migrations, drivers, and character identifiers does the framework expect?
- Script compatibility: Do your planned resources target the framework directly, or will you need bridges and rewrites?
- Administration tools: How are permissions, staff roles, bans, warnings, and audit information represented?
- Migration cost: If you change frameworks later, can characters, inventory, money, and ownership data be converted safely?
QBCore considerations
The documented Windows txAdmin installation path for QBCore requires a Cfx.re account, a server license key, an archive extractor, and a running MySQL or MariaDB service. txAdmin deploys the server recipe; it does not install the database service for you.

Plan the database before deploying QBCore resources. Record the database host, port, database name, username, and password in the framework’s documented connection format, then test the connection with a disposable character before importing real player data. Keep credentials out of public repositories and screenshots.
ESX and Qbox considerations
Use the same evaluation process for ESX and Qbox: identify the resources you will actually run, confirm their supported framework versions, inspect their database requirements, and test migration implications. A resource that looks compatible by name can still depend on a particular inventory, targeting system, identifier format, or framework API.
Build the roleplay layer after the base server works
Do not add dozens of resources before confirming that the clean recipe starts and accepts a connection. Add systems in small groups, restart, and read both client and server consoles after each change.
Characters, identity, and persistence
- Configure character creation and required identity fields.
- Test first spawn, death or respawn behavior, disconnect, and reconnect.
- Verify that a character’s name, position, inventory, money, and owned items persist after a restart.
- Confirm that a failed database write does not silently delete or duplicate data.
Jobs, businesses, inventory, and economy
- Create at least one civilian job and one emergency or staff-controlled job.
- Test pay cycles, item ownership, storage, vehicle ownership, and business transactions.
- Check that negative balances, duplicated items, and disconnected transactions are handled safely.
- Apply database migrations in the documented order and keep a copy of the pre-migration database.
Permissions and moderation
- Define owner, administrator, moderator, and support roles with the minimum permissions each requires.
- Test admin access separately from ordinary player access.
- Provide ban, kick, warning, report, and appeal workflows.
- Log sensitive actions such as money changes, item grants, teleportation, and bans.
Voice, chat, and conduct rules
Publish rules for voice and text chat, combat, fail roleplay, exploits, harassment, and reporting. Decide who is on moderation duty during launch hours and how urgent incidents are escalated. The framework does not choose your community standards; the owner must define and enforce them.

Back up before every major change
Back up the complete server folder, server.cfg, framework resources, database, and txAdmin txData directory before changing a recipe, framework, database schema, or large resource set. A backup that contains only scripts cannot restore player state if the database is missing.
Use dated backup folders and keep at least one copy outside the live machine. Test restoration on a separate directory instead of assuming that a successful file copy is a usable backup. Do not deploy a new recipe over an existing working data folder until the backup is complete and readable.
Run a closed beta before going public
- Invite a small group of testers with different jobs and permission levels.
- Ask them to create characters, reconnect, earn and spend money, store items, use vehicles, and report other players.
- Record each defect with reproduction steps, resource name, console output, and the time it occurred.
- Fix database and permission errors before adding cosmetic or optional resources.
- Repeat the test after every framework update or migration.
A closed beta reveals persistence, load-order, and moderation failures that a successful first connection cannot. Do not advertise performance or reliability results you have not actually tested.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting in practice
Why self-hosting appeals
- You choose the artifact build and update schedule.
- You control firewall rules, files, database placement, and backup destinations.
- You can move the server to another machine without waiting for a provider’s export process.
The trade-off is operational responsibility. You must patch the operating system, monitor disk space and memory, protect the txAdmin panel, maintain the database, configure ports, and recover from failures.
Why managed hosting appeals
- The provider may preinstall FXServer and supply the ports and txAdmin URL.
- Routine machine maintenance is removed from your checklist.
- Support can help with provider-specific networking or restarts.

Read the terms carefully. Verify whether backups are automatic or merely available as a paid add-on, whether you can download the database and txData, how CPU and RAM are shared, what happens when you reach the player-slot limit, and whether you can migrate your files to another host.
Troubleshoot the first failures
txAdmin does not appear
- Confirm FXServer was started without
+exec server.cfgon the first boot. - Read the console for the URL and one-time PIN rather than assuming the panel is on another port.
- Try
http://localhost:40120from the host machine. - Check that another process is not already using the panel port.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm FXServer is still running and has not stopped on a resource or configuration error.
- Check the configured TCP and UDP endpoint, commonly
0.0.0.0:30120in the vanilla example. - Verify that the host firewall and any upstream firewall allow the selected game ports.
- For managed hosting, use the provider-assigned address and ports instead of assuming the local defaults.
A recipe fails during deployment
- Recheck the Cfx registration key and paste it without extra characters.
- Confirm that the selected data location is writable and has enough space.
- Check framework dependencies and the database connection details.
- Read the txAdmin and server console output for the first error, not only the final failure message.
- Restore the previous backup before trying a different recipe over an existing working folder.
The framework starts but data does not persist
- Confirm the MySQL or MariaDB service is running and reachable from FXServer.
- Verify database credentials, schema name, and connection string syntax.
- Apply all required migrations in order.
- Check server logs for permission, table, or timeout errors.
- Test with a new disposable character before touching existing player records.
A practical 2026 launch sequence
- Choose Windows, Linux, or managed hosting based on the infrastructure work you can maintain.
- Register the Cfx.re account and create the free portal key.
- Download the recommended FXServer artifacts and install any required runtime, including the Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable when the GTAV Enhanced guide requires it.
- Start FXServer without an exec argument and complete txAdmin account linking.
- Deploy the CFX Default FiveM recipe, save, run, and connect with the FiveM client.
- Back up the server folder and txAdmin
txData. - Choose a framework after checking resource compatibility, maintenance, database design, and migration cost.
- Install the database service and framework resources in a controlled order.
- Configure persistence, jobs, economy, permissions, moderation, voice, and rules.
- Run a closed beta, fix reproducible errors, and only then open public access.
This sequence separates infrastructure problems from gameplay problems. If the clean FXServer recipe is stable first, a later failure is far easier to attribute to a framework, database, resource dependency, or configuration change.
Final decision
For most first-time owners, start with the official FXServer artifacts and bundled txAdmin recipe flow, then build the roleplay systems incrementally. Self-host when you need complete control and can maintain the machine; choose managed hosting when reducing infrastructure work is worth checking its limits, backups, support, and export terms. The framework choice should follow the resources and database model you intend to operate, not a claim that one ecosystem is universally superior.
