The dependable small-VPS pattern is FastAPI behind Gunicorn running Uvicorn workers, with Nginx as the public reverse proxy and TLS endpoint. Keep the application in a virtual environment, keep database credentials out of the repository, supervise the service so it survives reboots and crashes, and restrict the database to the application host or a private network.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide walks through the complete path: preparing a Linux VPS, creating the FastAPI project, connecting a NoSQL driver, testing the database path, creating a supervised production service, adding Nginx and HTTPS, and checking the failure modes that commonly make a deployment appear healthy when it is not.

What the finished deployment looks like
A request should travel through a small number of clearly separated layers:
| Layer | Purpose | Typical choice on one VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Internet boundary | Accepts public HTTP and HTTPS, handles certificates, and records access logs | Nginx |
| Application process | Serves the FastAPI ASGI application | Gunicorn managing Uvicorn workers |
| Python project | Routes requests, validates data, and calls the database client | FastAPI in an isolated virtual environment |
| Data layer | Stores documents, key-value records, graphs, or other NoSQL data | The engine and driver selected for your application |
| Service supervision | Starts on boot, restarts failed processes, and controls logs and shutdown | systemd or another host-level supervisor |
Uvicorn is the ASGI server, not a complete production operating model. Its deployment guidance distinguishes development use of uvicorn --reload from production use of Gunicorn with a Uvicorn worker and recommends Nginx for self-hosted deployments. FastAPI’s deployment guidance likewise treats HTTPS, startup, restarts, replication, memory, and preparation of the remote machine as separate production decisions.

Choose the VPS and database boundary
Single VPS with a private database
For a small service, the VPS can run Nginx, the FastAPI workers, and the database client, while the actual NoSQL server is either on the same machine or on a private database host. If the database server is on the VPS, bind it to localhost or the VPS’s private interface rather than its public address. A public database port is an avoidable attack surface.
Running the database on the same machine is simple and gives you control over network latency, configuration, and cost, but all components compete for memory and disk. A database failure, full disk, or memory pressure can affect the API. A managed NoSQL service separates those failure domains and often supplies backups and monitoring, but introduces a provider dependency, network access rules, and a recurring bill. The application-side connection and lifecycle code remains the same conceptually.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Direct Uvicorn, Gunicorn, and systemd
Running Uvicorn directly is useful for a first smoke test and for local development. It is not a substitute for a supervisor: a shell session does not reliably restart a process after a crash or start it after reboot. Gunicorn can manage multiple Uvicorn workers, while systemd can manage the Gunicorn master process, its environment, restart policy, permissions, and logs. On a very small VPS, begin with one worker and increase the count only after measuring memory and request behavior.
Nginx versus an external proxy
Nginx on the VPS provides a public listener, TLS termination, request limits, buffering, access logs, and a private hop to the application. An external load balancer or CDN can perform some of those functions and can make multi-server scaling easier, but it adds another network boundary and configuration surface. The examples below assume Nginx is the trusted proxy that connects to the application.
Prepare the Linux VPS
Create a deployment identity
Log in with the provider’s initial administrative account only long enough to create a named deployment user. Give that user a home directory and the minimum administrative access needed for package installation and service management. Do not run the API as root.
sudo adduser apiuser
sudo usermod -aG sudo apiuser
Use your distribution’s normal SSH-key setup, disable password authentication only after confirming that key login works, and keep a second administrative session open while changing SSH settings. The application user should own the project directory but should not own unrelated system directories.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePatch the operating system and install base packages
On Debian- or Ubuntu-family systems, update package metadata and apply security updates before installing Python tooling and Nginx:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install python3 python3-venv python3-pip nginx
Package names differ on other Linux distributions. The important result is a supported Python interpreter, virtual-environment support, pip or an equivalent package installer, and Nginx.
Allow only required network ports
Keep the public firewall small. SSH is needed for administration; HTTP and HTTPS are needed only if Nginx is the public entry point. The application port and a database port should not be publicly reachable.

sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
If your provider has a separate cloud firewall, apply the same policy there. For a database on another host, allow its port only from the VPS’s private address or private network, never from every Internet address.
Create a dedicated application directory
sudo mkdir -p /srv/fastapi-app
sudo chown -R apiuser:apiuser /srv/fastapi-app
sudo -iu apiuser
cd /srv/fastapi-app
Keep deployment files, logs, uploaded data, and secrets separated according to your operating system’s permissions. Source control should contain code and non-sensitive defaults, not database passwords, private keys, or production connection strings.
Create the FastAPI project
Build an isolated Python environment
cd /srv/fastapi-app
python3 -m venv .venv
. .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
pip install "fastapi[standard]" gunicorn
The official FastAPI repository also demonstrates the equivalent package installation with uv add "fastapi[standard]". Use one dependency-management method consistently, commit its lock or requirements file, and install the same resolved versions during deployment.
Use an importable application object
Gunicorn and Uvicorn need an import string in the form module:app. A minimal project can be organized like this:
/srv/fastapi-app/
app/
__init__.py
main.py
settings.py
db.py
routers/
.venv/
.env
In app/main.py, define the application object and a health route:
from fastapi import FastAPI
app = FastAPI(title="VPS API")
@app.get("/healthz")
async def healthz():
return {"status": "ok"}
The import string for this layout is app.main:app. If the file is named main.py in the project root, the equivalent is main:app.
Keep configuration outside source code
Read the NoSQL URI, database name, environment name, and any pool limits from environment variables. Fail at startup when a required value is absent instead of silently connecting to a local or development database.
from dataclasses import dataclass
import os
@dataclass(frozen=True)
class Settings:
nosql_uri: str
database_name: str
environment: str
@classmethod
def from_env(cls):
uri = os.environ.get("NOSQL_URI")
name = os.environ.get("NOSQL_DATABASE")
if not uri or not name:
raise RuntimeError("NOSQL_URI and NOSQL_DATABASE are required")
return cls(uri, name, os.environ.get("APP_ENV", "production"))
settings = Settings.from_env()
Store the actual values in a root-readable secret file or a service-manager environment mechanism. Restrict the file to the deployment user and the service account, and never print the URI in startup logs.
Connect FastAPI to a NoSQL database
Select a driver for the actual engine
FastAPI does not choose or bundle a NoSQL database. MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB-compatible stores, document databases, key-value stores, and other engines have different clients, data models, indexes, consistency controls, and failure behavior. Install the maintained client for the engine you actually run and use its asynchronous interface when request handlers perform network I/O.

The lifecycle pattern is common even though the import names are not. Create one client per application process, reuse its connection pool, select the database, and close the client during shutdown. Do not create a new client for every request.
# Illustrative lifecycle pattern; replace the client import and options
# with the maintained async driver for your selected NoSQL engine.
from contextlib import asynccontextmanager
from fastapi import FastAPI
client = None
database = None
@asynccontextmanager
async def lifespan(app: FastAPI):
global client, database
client = create_async_client(settings.nosql_uri)
database = client[settings.database_name]
await client.ping()
try:
yield
finally:
await client.close()
app = FastAPI(lifespan=lifespan)
The names create_async_client and client[database_name] represent driver-specific operations; replace them with the documented API for your engine. Keep the connectivity check short enough that a broken database fails readiness clearly rather than leaving workers hanging during startup.
Expose database operations through dependencies or repositories
Keep route functions focused on HTTP concerns. A small repository or dependency can receive the already-open database handle and perform reads and writes. Validate request bodies with Pydantic models, define explicit timeouts where the driver supports them, and convert driver exceptions into deliberate HTTP responses without leaking credentials or server details.
from fastapi import APIRouter, HTTPException
router = APIRouter(prefix="/items")
@router.get("/{item_id}")
async def get_item(item_id: str):
item = await find_item(database, item_id)
if item is None:
raise HTTPException(status_code=404, detail="Item not found")
return item
Again, find_item is where the selected driver’s query API belongs. Keep indexes, collection creation, schema conventions, and retry rules documented with the application rather than assuming that the web framework supplies them.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallPlan indexes, pooling, and consistency deliberately
Define indexes for the fields used in real filters and sort operations. An unindexed query that is acceptable in a test database can consume the VPS’s CPU and disk when data grows. Set a connection-pool ceiling that fits the database’s limits and the number of application workers: every worker normally owns its own client and pool. Decide which operations can tolerate eventual consistency, which require a stronger read concern, and how duplicate or transient errors should be retried.
Backups and retention belong to the selected NoSQL engine, not to FastAPI. Confirm that a backup can be restored to an isolated environment and that alerts exist for storage, memory, replication lag, and failed backup jobs.
Run and verify the application on the VPS
Start on localhost and a high port
Before involving Nginx, run the application privately on the VPS. The FastAPI manual deployment shape is equivalent to:
. .venv/bin/activate
uv run uvicorn app.main:app --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8000
If you are not using uv, invoke the binary inside the virtual environment:
Recommended Free Tools
.venv/bin/uvicorn app.main:app --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8000
Binding to 127.0.0.1 keeps this test listener off the public network. Use 0.0.0.0 only when a trusted network boundary requires the application to listen on all interfaces.

Test health and a real database path
From the VPS, call the health route and then exercise one read or write operation that reaches the NoSQL server:
curl -i http://127.0.0.1:8000/healthz
curl -i http://127.0.0.1:8000/items/example
Check the process output for import errors, authentication failures, DNS problems, TLS errors, and timeout messages. A successful health response that never touches the database does not prove that credentials, network rules, indexes, or the selected database name are correct. Add a readiness check that reports database reachability when your service cannot function without it, while keeping a lightweight liveness check for process supervision.
Do not use reload mode in production
--reload watches files and starts development reload machinery. FastAPI warns that it consumes substantially more resources and is less stable, so it belongs in development rather than the production service. Stop the manual test process before creating the supervised service.
Run production workers under systemd and Gunicorn
Create an environment file
For example, create /etc/fastapi-app.env as an administrator and restrict it:
sudo install -o root -g apiuser -m 640 /dev/null /etc/fastapi-app.env
sudoedit /etc/fastapi-app.env
NOSQL_URI=your-driver-connection-value
NOSQL_DATABASE=production_db
APP_ENV=production
The values above are names, not secrets to copy literally. Put the real connection string in the protected file and ensure it is excluded from source control and diagnostic output.
Define the service
Create /etc/systemd/system/fastapi.service:
[Unit]
Description=FastAPI service
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
User=apiuser
Group=apiuser
WorkingDirectory=/srv/fastapi-app
EnvironmentFile=/etc/fastapi-app.env
ExecStart=/srv/fastapi-app/.venv/bin/gunicorn app.main:app -k uvicorn.workers.UvicornWorker --bind 127.0.0.1:8000 --workers 1
Restart=always
RestartSec=5
TimeoutStopSec=30
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Gunicorn’s Uvicorn worker is the production baseline recommended by Uvicorn. Start conservatively: each worker loads application code and normally creates its own database client and pool. More workers can improve concurrency for some workloads but can exhaust memory or database connections on a small VPS.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Enable, inspect, and deliberately restart the service
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now fastapi.service
sudo systemctl status fastapi.service
sudo journalctl -u fastapi.service -f
Confirm that a deliberate process failure causes a restart, then verify that the service starts after a reboot. Use systemctl restart fastapi.service for a controlled deployment restart and inspect the journal immediately if the unit enters a restart loop.
Put Nginx in front of the application
Create a reverse-proxy server block
Configure a domain name to resolve to the VPS, then create an Nginx server block such as:
server {
listen 80;
server_name api.example.com;
client_max_body_size 10m;
access_log /var/log/nginx/fastapi_access.log;
error_log /var/log/nginx/fastapi_error.log;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000;
proxy_http_version 1.1;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $host;
proxy_read_timeout 60s;
}
}
Replace the example hostname with the hostname you control. Keep the upstream listener on localhost or a Unix-domain socket so clients cannot bypass Nginx. Adjust body-size and timeout values to the API’s real upload and long-running request requirements; generous limits can make resource exhaustion easier.
Best Value
Validate and reload safely
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Fix every syntax error before reloading. Test the public hostname and inspect both Nginx logs and the systemd journal. Add WebSocket upgrade headers only for routes that actually use WebSockets; ordinary HTTP APIs do not need them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Enable HTTPS and handle forwarded headers safely
Terminate TLS at Nginx
Use a certificate service such as Let’s Encrypt or another trusted certificate authority. The proxy receives HTTPS from the client, decrypts it, and sends plain HTTP over the private hop to Uvicorn. Configure automatic renewal and test renewal before the certificate’s expiration window, not just the initial issuance.
After the certificate is installed, create an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and an HTTPS server block. Keep the proxy headers from the earlier configuration so the application can reconstruct the original host, scheme, and client address.
Trust only the proxy that connects to the app
X-Forwarded-For, X-Forwarded-Proto, and X-Forwarded-Host are assertions supplied by a proxy. FastAPI documents that the application server otherwise communicates with the TLS proxy over plain HTTP. Uvicorn warns that trusting forwarded headers from arbitrary clients allows address and scheme spoofing.
Configure Uvicorn’s forwarded-allow list with the actual proxy address or socket peer that can reach the application, such as the local Nginx listener. Do not use an unrestricted wildcard when the application port is reachable by untrusted networks. If you later add a load balancer, update the trusted proxy chain deliberately and ensure the application port is still firewalled from direct Internet access.
Production security and reliability checks
- Use a non-root service account and keep the project, environment file, and private keys permission-restricted.
- Patch the operating system and Python dependencies on a planned schedule, with a rollback path for incompatible updates.
- Expose only SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS publicly; keep Uvicorn and database ports private.
- Use encrypted database connections when the engine and network topology require them, and rotate credentials without committing them to source control.
- Separate liveness from readiness: liveness proves the process responds, while readiness can prove that required database connectivity is available.
- Set database and HTTP timeouts so an unreachable dependency does not consume every worker indefinitely.
- Write access, error, application, and database-client logs to locations with rotation and retention. Never log passwords, full connection strings, or sensitive request bodies.
- Define indexes before launch and monitor query latency, connection-pool saturation, disk usage, memory, and replication health.
- Back up the selected NoSQL data, set retention, and perform a restore exercise on a separate environment.
- Document how to roll back application code, environment values, and database changes independently.
Completion checklist before opening the service publicly
- Resolve the API hostname to the VPS and confirm that Nginx is the only public application listener.
- Run
nginx -t, reload Nginx, and verify both HTTP redirect behavior and HTTPS certificate validation. - Confirm that
systemctl enable fastapi.servicehas taken effect and that a reboot starts the service automatically. - Stop or kill a test worker and verify that systemd and Gunicorn recover it without manual shell intervention.
- Call the health endpoint through Nginx, then perform a representative NoSQL read and write through the public HTTPS route.
- Inspect application logs to confirm that the recorded scheme is HTTPS and that the client address is the expected address after proxy processing.
- Test an invalid database credential in a staging copy so you know what a startup failure looks like and where it is logged.
- Verify that the database cannot be reached from an unrelated public network and that its firewall permits only the intended application host or private network.
- Check memory with the chosen worker count under realistic traffic; increase workers only when the VPS and database connection limits support them.
- Confirm backups, retention, indexes, capacity alerts, certificate renewal, and an on-call recovery procedure.
Common failures and targeted fixes
Gunicorn exits immediately
Check the import string, the working directory, and the Python environment first. app.main:app requires an importable app package and an object named app in main.py. Run the same ExecStart command as the service user in the project directory to reveal missing packages or syntax errors.
Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway
Check systemctl status fastapi.service, the systemd journal, and the Nginx error log. A stopped service, a wrong bind address or port, a Unix-socket permission error, or a crashed worker can all produce 502. Confirm that Nginx’s proxy_pass target exactly matches the listener shown by the service.
The API works locally but the database call fails
Verify the environment file loaded by systemd, not merely the variables in your interactive shell. Check the database hostname, DNS resolution, credentials, TLS requirements, firewall source rules, selected database name, and driver timeout. A localhost test can succeed against a development database while the supervised service is configured for a different endpoint.
Client addresses or HTTPS URLs look wrong
Inspect the three forwarded headers at the Nginx-to-application boundary and the server’s forwarded-allow configuration. Trust only the proxy that can reach the application. If the application port is publicly accessible, fix the firewall before expanding the trusted list; otherwise an attacker can send forged headers directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMemory usage climbs after adding workers
Every worker loads the application and commonly creates its own NoSQL pool. Reduce the worker count, lower pool limits, inspect slow or unbounded queries, and measure again. A larger worker count is not automatically faster on a VPS whose CPU, memory, or database connection budget is already saturated.
Decide when to move beyond one VPS
| Situation | One self-managed VPS | Separate or managed infrastructure |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic and topology | One Nginx boundary and one application host are easy to reason about | Multiple application hosts need a load balancer, shared configuration, and coordinated releases |
| Database operations | Local or private database access is straightforward but shares host resources | A managed or separate database can isolate failures and simplify backups, subject to provider limits and network design |
| Process management | systemd plus Gunicorn gives clear startup and restart behavior | Container or platform schedulers can add placement, rollout, and health automation |
| TLS boundary | Nginx can terminate certificates directly on the VPS | An external proxy can centralize certificates and traffic policy across hosts |
| Operational control | Maximum control over packages, logs, firewall, and tuning | Less host maintenance in exchange for platform conventions, network dependencies, and service costs |
Move when a single host is a measurable bottleneck or a single failure domain is unacceptable, not merely because a different deployment diagram looks more sophisticated. Preserve the same fundamentals: private upstreams, explicit health checks, supervised processes, trusted proxy boundaries, protected secrets, and tested database recovery.
Final deployment sequence
Prepare a patched VPS and non-root user, install Python and Nginx, create the virtual environment, and define an importable FastAPI application. Select and configure the NoSQL driver, initialize one client per worker during application startup, and close it on shutdown. Prove a health response and a real database operation on localhost. Then place Gunicorn with Uvicorn workers under systemd, bind it privately, proxy through Nginx, obtain a certificate, and configure forwarded-header trust for the actual proxy address. Finish by testing reboot recovery, deliberate failure recovery, database isolation, backups, logs, memory, and certificate renewal. That sequence turns a listening development process into an operational FastAPI service.
