Point a subdomain such as ark.example.com to your server’s public IPv4 address with a DNS A record. Then make sure the ASA server is running, its operating-system firewall allows the configured traffic, and your router, NAT, or VPS firewall forwards the game and query ports to the same machine. DNS supplies a memorable name; it does not open ports or replace a reachable public endpoint.

What a custom domain changes—and what it does not
A custom domain gives players a stable name instead of a numeric address. You can advertise ark.example.com rather than an address such as 203.0.113.10. When a player’s device looks up the hostname, DNS returns the public IPv4 address you published. The ARK client or Steam browser then still connects to the server’s configured port.

The domain is only the naming layer. It cannot start the dedicated server, bypass a carrier-grade NAT, repair a blocked firewall rule, or discover a changed residential IP by itself. A successful setup has four separate parts:
- A public endpoint: a self-hosted machine with a reachable public IPv4 address, or a hosted/VPS server.
- DNS: an authoritative zone containing an A record for your chosen hostname.
- ASA configuration: launch arguments that define the game and query ports.
- Network access: operating-system, router/NAT, and hosting-firewall rules that forward and allow those ports.
If any one of those layers is wrong, the name can resolve correctly while players still cannot join.

Requirements before you create the record
Collect the following information first. Writing it down avoids a common mistake: creating DNS for one address or port while the server is actually listening on another.

The ARK Official Community Wiki describes a general home-connection recommendation of 100 Mb or better for supporting a good number of players. Treat that as guidance rather than a guaranteed capacity figure: player count, mods, other traffic, hardware, and the quality of the connection all affect the result. For VPS planning, the same documentation gives an estimate of up to 60 KiB/s per connected player; it is an estimate, not a promise of performance.

Use a dedicated subdomain
A subdomain keeps the game endpoint separate from a website or mail service. Common labels include ark, asa, or a region or season name. If your domain is example.com, an ark label creates ark.example.com. You can choose another label; the DNS type and destination are the same.
Create the record in the authoritative DNS zone
- Open the DNS management page for the domain’s authoritative zone.
- Add a new record with type A.
- Enter the hostname label, such as
ark. Some interfaces ask for only the label; others accept the complete hostname. Follow the field’s convention so you do not accidentally createark.example.com.example.com. - Enter the public IPv4 address as the value, for example
203.0.113.10. - Save the record and leave the value as a bare address. Do not enter
http://, a port, a path, or a trailing game-server string.
The resulting record conceptually looks like this:

Use an A record for the documented ARK-specific baseline. A DNS record does not include the game port, so the join workflow may still require a port or a server-list entry to identify the service.
Configure the ASA server’s ports
Keep the launch arguments authoritative
The dedicated-server command supports Port=<port> and QueryPort=<query_port>. Use the values in the command that actually starts your instance; do not assume that a remembered default matches your current configuration.
Port=7777 QueryPort=27015The snippet illustrates the arguments, not a complete executable command. Preserve the exact values in your server notes because the router, host firewall, Steam test, and troubleshooting steps all depend on them.
Understand the documented default layout

The table shows the common documented defaults, not a rule that every installation must use them. If your launch command uses different values, forward those actual values. With several instances on one host, each instance needs its own game, peer, query, and optional RCON ports; the ARK setup documentation describes incrementing the ports for additional instances.

Open and forward the network traffic
Self-hosted behind a home router
- Give the machine running ASA a stable address on your local network, preferably through a DHCP reservation or a static configuration. The forwarding target must not change unexpectedly.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule for the game UDP port (7777 in the documented default layout) to the server’s private address.
- Create a second UDP rule for the peer port (7778 by default).
- Create a UDP rule for the query port (27015 by default) so server-browser and query tests can reach the instance.
- Add a TCP rule for 27020 only if you have enabled and intend to use RCON. Leaving an unnecessary administration port closed reduces exposure.
- Apply the rules and confirm that they target the same machine and port numbers shown in the launch command.
Some routers distinguish external and internal ports. Use the same number on both sides unless you have a specific reason to translate it, and document any translation so players know which public query port to test.
Operating-system firewall
Port forwarding cannot help if the server machine rejects the packets locally. Add inbound firewall rules for the configured UDP game, peer, and query ports. Add the optional TCP RCON rule only when RCON is enabled. Select the correct network profile and verify that the rule applies to the executable or service that launches ASA. A rule for the wrong protocol—TCP instead of UDP for the game port, for example—will look like a DNS failure to players even though name resolution is working.
VPS or hosted machine
On a hosted server, replace the home-router step with the provider’s network or security-group firewall. Allow the same protocols and actual port values, then check the operating-system firewall inside the instance. A public VPS address usually removes the home NAT layer, but it does not automatically open the host firewall.

Handle a changing residential IP
If your internet provider changes the public IPv4 address, the A record continues to point to the old machine until it is updated. Decide how you will detect and correct that change before sharing the hostname.
- Manual update: check the current public address after an outage or router restart, then edit the A record.
- Dynamic update: use a DNS provider’s dynamic-update feature if it independently supports updating the specific A record you chose. Verify the provider’s behavior and credentials before relying on it for a live server.
- Hosted endpoint: move the server to a VPS or game-server host with a stable public address when repeated residential changes are unacceptable.
After changing the record, previously cached answers can remain in use until their TTL expires. This is why one player may see the new address while another still reaches the old one.
Set a practical DNS TTL and allow caching to clear
TTL is the amount of time recursive DNS resolvers may cache an answer. Your DNS provider supplies the TTL control; choose a practical value for your operational needs, then account for existing caches when you change the address. Lowering the TTL after a problem has already occurred cannot instantly remove answers that were cached under the previous, longer TTL.
Do not treat a successful lookup immediately after saving as proof that every player has the new value. Test from more than one network if an address was recently changed, and communicate the old-to-new transition when the server is active during the change.

Verify the setup in layers
1. Confirm DNS resolution
Query ark.example.com with your operating system’s DNS tools or a reputable DNS lookup service. The returned A record should match the current public IPv4 address. If it does not, inspect the authoritative zone for a typo, duplicate record, or wrong hostname, then allow the relevant TTL-based cache to expire.
2. Confirm the server is running and listening
Check the ASA process and its startup output on the host. Confirm that the launch arguments contain the intended Port and QueryPort, and that the process is listening on the expected interfaces. A correct A record cannot make a stopped instance appear online.
3. Confirm the network path
Review the operating-system firewall, then the router/NAT forwarding or VPS firewall. The destination private address must belong to the machine running ASA. Check UDP rules for the game, peer, and query ports separately; a working game port does not prove that the query port is open.
4. Check the ARK unofficial list or Steam browser
The server may take time to appear in a list, and list visibility depends on query traffic. Verify that the query port is the one actually configured. Steam favorites can be tested with the numeric address and query port in the form IP:QUERYPORT. For the documented default, that would be the public address followed by :27015. This test deliberately bypasses DNS: if the numeric favorite works but the hostname does not, investigate DNS; if both fail, investigate the server or network path.

Once resolution and direct query testing work, give players the hostname and the port only where the join screen requests it. Keep the numeric address and query port in your administrator notes so you can isolate a future DNS issue without changing firewall rules.
A record versus SRV records
An A record is the documented ARK setup baseline because it reliably maps the chosen hostname to the server’s public IPv4 address. Generic DNS SRV records can describe a priority, weight, port, and target hostname, but the available ARK sources do not establish that every ASA client or platform consumes an ARK-specific SRV record.
Use an SRV record only as an informed experiment after confirming support in the exact client and platform your players use. Do not replace a working A record with SRV and assume the game will infer the port. If the join flow does not explicitly support SRV, keep the A record and provide the port when requested.

One hostname per server instance
Running multiple ASA instances on one host requires separation at both the port and naming layers. Assign each instance a distinct game port, peer port, query port, and optional RCON port. Create separate hostnames, such as ark-main.example.com and ark-test.example.com, that point to the same public address. Players then select the intended instance by hostname and the corresponding query or join port.
Do not copy the first instance’s forwarding rules unchanged. The second instance’s peer port normally remains one higher than its own game port, and its query port must be unique. Record the mapping in a table for administrators:

The table intentionally uses each instance’s configured values rather than inventing numbers. Fill it from the launch commands before creating firewall rules.
Self-hosting versus a VPS or hosted server
The DNS procedure is the same in either environment: create an A record for the public address. The operational trade-offs are different.

Neither choice removes the need to verify the ASA launch ports and firewall rules. A hosted address simplifies the NAT path; it does not make an incorrectly configured query port work.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The hostname resolves to the wrong address
Inspect the authoritative DNS zone and confirm that the A record’s value is the current public IPv4 address. Check for an old A record at the same name, a typo in the label, or an interface that automatically appends the domain twice. If the record was recently changed, wait for cached answers to expire according to the prior TTL.
The hostname resolves, but nobody can join
Start at the server and move outward: confirm that ASA is running, verify the launch Port and QueryPort, allow the matching UDP traffic in the operating-system firewall, and inspect router/NAT or VPS firewall rules. Confirm that forwarding reaches the machine running ASA rather than another device that received a new private address.
The server is missing from lists
Check that the instance is running and that the query port is open and correctly configured. Test the server in Steam favorites with IP:QUERYPORT. If the numeric test fails, DNS is not the immediate problem; focus on the query rule, server state, and firewall path. If the numeric test works while the hostname does not, return to the A record and cache checks.

Audit duplicate port assignments and hostnames. Every instance needs unique game, peer, and query ports, and each forwarding rule must target the intended process. Make the hostname-to-instance mapping explicit in your administrator documentation.
The server works until the home router reconnects
Compare the new public address with the A record. If they differ, update the record or repair the verified dynamic-update process. Players using a cached old answer may continue to fail until that cache’s TTL expires.
RCON is not available
RCON is optional and uses TCP, unlike the default game, peer, and query traffic. Confirm that RCON is enabled in the server configuration, that the TCP port you selected is forwarded and allowed, and that you have a specific administrative need for exposing it. Do not diagnose an RCON issue by opening unrelated UDP ports.
Operational and security checklist
- Keep a written record of every instance’s
Port, peer port,QueryPort, and optional RCON port. - Use a stable internal address for a home-hosted machine so forwarding does not silently target another device.
- Open only the protocols and ports the instance needs. The game, peer, and query defaults are UDP; RCON is optional TCP.
- Do not put a protocol prefix, port, or URL path in an A-record value.
- Retain the numeric public address and query port for diagnostics even after the domain works.
- Back up server saves and configuration independently of the DNS provider or hosting machine.
- When changing an address, note the old TTL and expect different resolvers to update at different times.
- Test from outside the home network. A router may allow a local “hairpin” connection that does not prove internet reachability.
What players should receive
For a single public instance, give players the hostname, for example ark.example.com, and tell them where the join interface expects the port. If the server is listed, they can search for it by name; if you are diagnosing discovery, provide the numeric public address and query port separately for a Steam-favorites test. Do not distribute a private LAN address: it works only inside your local network.
