Build a repeatable baseline with Playwright, separate projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and browser binaries installed to match your Playwright version. Treat that as engine coverage—not proof of branded Chrome, Edge, or Safari behavior—and add emulation, real devices, or a hosted grid only when your support policy requires them.
Choose the browsers and devices you actually support
Start with your product’s supported-browser policy, then use site analytics and user needs to decide which browsers, operating systems, and device classes to test. There is no universal version matrix: the right set depends on your audience, support commitments, and CI budget.
Record the decisions in the repository so developers and CI use the same baseline. For each target, note the browser or engine, operating system where relevant, desktop or mobile class, and whether you require a specific branded browser or physical device. Revisit the matrix when product support changes.
Install Playwright and its browser binaries
Playwright’s browser guide says, “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” Install Playwright in your project and commit the package lockfile; then install the browsers that match the installed framework version. Install Playwright using the package manager and test setup appropriate to your project. For an existing project, use its package manager to add the Playwright test package and retain the resulting lockfile.

Install the default browser binaries with
npx playwright install. To install a specific engine, use a command such asnpx playwright install webkit. -
In CI environments that need operating-system dependencies, run
npx playwright install-depsor combine dependency and browser installation, for examplenpx playwright install --with-deps chromium. Choose the browser argument to match the project’s needs. -
Repeat browser installation when upgrading Playwright. Its browser versions change with framework releases, so a framework upgrade without matching binaries can leave local or CI runs unable to launch the browser.

The commands above install browser infrastructure; they do not choose your support matrix. Install only the engines and dependencies needed by the projects you intend to run.
Configure a project for each browser engine
Playwright projects let the same test suite run with different browser configurations. A concise starting configuration is:

This is a baseline, not a mandatory matrix. Add projects for different browser options, branded browser channels, or mobile profiles only when those represent a supported target. Keep the configuration aligned with the policy you recorded rather than expanding it simply because another profile is available.

Playwright’s default Chromium build is open-source Chromium; it is not automatically branded Chrome or Edge. Playwright documents selecting installed branded Chrome or Edge channels when public-browser regression behavior matters, including behavior affected by media codecs or enterprise policy. Those browsers are not installed by default as Playwright’s Chromium project. Consult the browser guide for channel setup details.
Likewise, Playwright’s WebKit is derived from WebKit main-branch sources; it is not branded Safari. A passing WebKit project is useful engine coverage, but it does not establish that a site behaves identically in Safari. For a support commitment specifically covering public Safari, include validation on the relevant Apple browser and device environment.
Decide explicitly whether your matrix promises engine compatibility, compatibility with public browser releases, or both. This distinction prevents a green engine-level run from being reported as broader branded-browser coverage than it provides.
Add mobile coverage in layers
Use emulation for scalable checks
Playwright device profiles and viewport emulation help check responsive layouts and broad mobile flows across projects. They are useful for repeatable automated coverage, but an emulated profile is not a physical handset.

If your support commitments depend on physical-device behavior, define the target operating systems and device classes from user evidence and policy, then test on actual devices or a hosted device service. The appropriate set varies; there is no universally representative phone list. BrowserStack’s device and browser matrix documentation describes device selection, including Android and iOS examples, but does not prescribe one set for every site.
When to use a hosted browser grid
A hosted grid is worth considering when your local machines cannot reasonably supply the browser, operating-system, or device combinations your support matrix requires. BrowserStack documents Playwright browser and OS capabilities and supported-version combinations; check its current matrix and Playwright setup documentation when implementing a provider configuration.

Provider versions, availability, and terms can change. Verify the live combinations during setup instead of copying a static version list into a long-lived article or build configuration. A hosted grid expands where tests can run; it does not decide which combinations your users require.
Keep local and CI runs reproducible

Commit the package manager’s lockfile so the project uses a controlled Playwright version.

Install the browser binaries that match that version in CI, including OS dependencies where needed.

Keep project names and the target browser/device matrix in version control, and change them when support policy changes.

On Playwright upgrades, refresh browser installations and check the local and CI setup together.
This is a reproducibility practice, not a guarantee tied to a particular CI vendor. The key dependency is the documented relationship between the Playwright release and its browser binaries.

Playwright’s .NET documentation describes connecting Playwright to Selenium Grid as experimental. The documented integration depends on Selenium 4 and a Chrome DevTools Protocol websocket, and its remote-browser connection is limited to Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Before connecting Playwright, confirm the Selenium WebDriver grid works independently. Do not choose this path on the assumption that it supplies remote Firefox or WebKit: those are outside the documented integration’s stated browser coverage. Teams requiring those engines should use a suitable alternative remote setup.

Browser executable is missing or will not launch
The installed Playwright package and browser binaries may not match, or the binaries may not have been installed in the environment running the tests. Run npx playwright install after installing the project’s locked dependencies; in CI, include the necessary OS dependencies with npx playwright install-deps or npx playwright install --with-deps chromium for a Chromium-only setup.
A test passes in Chromium but fails elsewhere
Confirm that the other engine is installed and configured as its own project, then run that project explicitly. An engine-specific failure is a reason to investigate that target, not to infer that all other browsers behave like Chromium.
A WebKit pass is being treated as a Safari pass
Correct the coverage report: Playwright WebKit is not branded Safari. Add public Safari validation if it is part of the support commitment.
Chrome or Edge behavior differs from the Chromium project
Check whether the regression depends on a branded channel, codec behavior, or enterprise policy. If so, configure the relevant installed Chrome or Edge channel explicitly rather than relying only on Playwright’s default Chromium build.
A mobile issue cannot be reproduced with an emulated profile
Determine whether the behavior requires physical-device validation and add actual devices or an appropriate hosted device service to the matrix. Emulation provides profile and viewport checks, not a physical handset.
A hosted combination is unavailable
Recheck the provider’s current supported browser, OS, and device combinations. Hosted matrices change; do not assume an older configuration remains available.
