How to Set Up a Continuous YouTube Stream on an AWS Lightsail VPS

You can keep a prerecorded video or generated feed streaming to YouTube from an AWS Lightsail Linux instance by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS and sending its output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key; the VPS initiates the outbound connection. This approach centralizes encoding and playback in the cloud, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service: you must plan for CPU and transfer capacity, process failures, YouTube-side interruptions, and recordings longer than YouTube’s automatic-archive limit.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. Verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance: YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, and a channel with a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days cannot livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A Linux/Unix AWS Lightsail instance with enough CPU for the encoding settings you choose, storage for the source media, and sufficient outbound transfer allowance for the stream. There is no universal instance size established for every source and output; benchmark your workload.
  • A source video you have the rights to stream, or another feed that your encoder can read.
  • A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: it authorizes an encoder to send content to the stream.

This is an encoder-push setup: FFmpeg on Lightsail sends media to YouTube. It is different from using a local hardware or software encoder, which performs the encoding and requires a reliable local source and upstream connection.

1. Enable YouTube Live and get the ingest details

  1. Verify your channel and enable live streaming ahead of your planned start. If it is your first activation, allow time for YouTube’s stated activation period.
  2. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream. Create a stream or select an existing setup. YouTube’s interface may change, so confirm the labels in Studio if they differ.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS server URL when the encoder supports it, and use the exact address YouTube provides rather than guessing a hostname or path. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live stream settings guidance.
  4. Keep the key out of screenshots, public repositories, source code, and world-readable files. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. A dedicated key can help separate this stream from others.

2. Create and secure a Lightsail instance

  1. In the AWS Lightsail console, create a Linux/Unix instance in a Region that suits your administration and network path. Choose an OS-only image if you plan to install and configure the encoder yourself. AWS documents instance creation and browser-based SSH in its Lightsail instance documentation.
  2. Select a bundle based on measured encoding load and expected monthly transfer, rather than assuming a particular plan can encode a particular resolution. Compare the current plan resources and transfer allowance for the selected Region in AWS Lightsail pricing before committing.
  3. Review both IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules. Lightsail documents separate firewall rule sets; the default rules for base Linux instances include SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS. Restrict SSH to trusted addresses where feasible. A static IPv4 address can be useful for administration or DNS if you need a stable address, but it is not required for YouTube ingest.
  4. Do not open an inbound RTMP or RTMPS port for this design. FFmpeg initiates an outbound connection to YouTube; Lightsail’s firewall controls inbound access and permits outbound traffic.
  5. Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source for your distribution or an official build source. FFmpeg is an implementation choice, not a YouTube requirement. Confirm the installed build supports the protocol and TLS features needed by the RTMPS URL YouTube provided.

3. Store the key safely and configure FFmpeg

Keep the source media on the instance, for example under /srv/stream/. Store the full ingest URL, including the key component YouTube requires, in a root-readable environment or secrets file with restrictive permissions. Avoid putting the credential directly into a shell command, a public service file, or a logged script. The example below assumes the complete ingest URL is supplied through YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL; adapt the input path and settings to your media, YouTube’s current guidance, and the instance’s tested capacity.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/loop.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"

This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested universal configuration or instance recommendation. The -re option reads file input at its native playback rate; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The example encodes H.264 video and AAC audio and sets a 30 fps output with a 60-frame GOP. It assumes the input has an audio track; if it does not, change the audio mapping or omit audio encoding as appropriate. For a generated or live feed, replace the file input with the actual source. Check that the repeated media joins acceptably at the loop point.

For H.264 1080p30, YouTube lists a recommended bitrate range of 5–14 Mbps, recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, and recommends RTMPS. Those values are guidance for that format, not a promise that a particular Lightsail plan can software-encode it. Choose settings using YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, then benchmark the selected source and encoding settings on your instance. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate should match both YouTube’s guidance and what your VPS can sustain.

4. Keep the encoder running under supervision

Run FFmpeg as a dedicated, non-root service account under systemd or another process supervisor. Configure an explicit working directory, a restart-on-failure policy, suitable resource limits, and logs that do not reveal the stream key. Test the service’s start, stop, and restart behavior before relying on it.

A supervisor can restart FFmpeg after a process failure, but it cannot by itself fix every transient ingest problem or recover from an instance, network, source-file, account, or YouTube-side failure. If a failed connection requires a retry loop, implement and validate that behavior explicitly. Also decide what should happen if the source file becomes unavailable or the instance reboots.

5. Start, preview, and monitor the stream

  1. Start the service and check its logs for input, encoding, and connection errors. Make sure the log output does not disclose credentials.
  2. Open the matching event in YouTube Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming preview and verify that the right stream and privacy setting are selected.
  3. Go live when the preview and stream health are acceptable, or use the event’s applicable auto-start behavior. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring stream health; consult its encoder setup and stream-health guidance.
  4. Watch long enough to confirm the content loops as intended, audio behaves correctly, FFmpeg stays active, and the YouTube player remains healthy. Set up an operator alert path so a failure does not depend on someone noticing it manually.

Estimate transfer and operating cost

Estimate outbound data as bitrate multiplied by runtime, then compare the result with the allowance for your current Lightsail bundle and Region. As a rough decimal calculation, a 5 Mbps stream sends about 2.25 GB per hour before protocol overhead (5 megabits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8,000 megabits per decimal gigabyte). A continuously running stream at that bitrate would therefore send about 1,620 GB over a 30-day month, before overhead. Actual transfer depends on the encoded output and runtime.

AWS bundle allowances and any applicable charges for excess outbound internet transfer depend on the selected plan and Region and can change. Re-check the live Lightsail pricing and allowance table and AWS pricing calculator for your Region before estimating cost. CPU load also matters: software encoding consumes VPS resources, and higher resolutions or more demanding presets may exceed the capacity you select.

Plan for archives and long-running failures

Recording streams longer than 12 hours

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream exceeding that duration will produce one complete automatic recording. If a complete archive matters, schedule and segment broadcasts into sessions or record a local copy with enough disk capacity and a retention plan. Verify how YouTube handles the configuration you actually use.

Recovery and operational checks

Write down what you will do if YouTube ingest disconnects, the stream key changes, the instance reboots, or the source file ends. Monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s stream health. A process being active does not prove that viewers can see a healthy stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube 24/7 stream without maintaining a VPS and encoder process, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
