Use a now-playing overlay that matches how the music reaches your YouTube stream. For YouTube or YouTube Music playing in a browser, the Music on stream extension is the most direct fit among these options. If Nightbot controls song requests, its app can write the current track to a file that OBS can display. If viewers choose songs through StreamElements, use its Media Request widget.
The key distinction is the playback source: these tools are not interchangeable ways to detect any song playing anywhere on your computer.
Choose a method based on where the music comes from

Decide whether you need a graphic overlay or plain text, whether viewers submit requests, and whether the source has chapters or a tracklist. Those details determine which route can supply a useful title.
Show titles for browser-based YouTube or YouTube Music playback
The Music on stream resource describes a browser-extension workflow for YouTube and YouTube Music. Its overlay can use YouTube chapters or a tracklist in the video description as title inputs; the listing also describes customizable presentation, scrolling long titles, and hiding the overlay while paused. These details come from the resource listing, not independent testing.

- Check the source video or playlist for usable chapters or a description playlist that identifies individual tracks.
- Review the Music on stream resource listing and verify that the extension is currently compatible with your browser and workflow: Music on stream on the OBS forum.
- Configure the overlay to use the available title source and add its display to your streaming scene according to the extension’s current instructions.
- Preview a track change and a pause before going live. If the title is missing or wrong, check the chapter or description data first; the overlay cannot show accurate track information that its source does not provide.
Because extension compatibility can change and the resource listing’s last update is September 18, 2025, avoid assuming that installation steps or browser support remain unchanged.
Display Nightbot’s current song in OBS
Use this route when Nightbot Song Requests controls the music. Nightbot documents an app for Windows and macOS that writes current-song information to a file in the Documents/Nightbot folder. Its Song Requests settings let you customize the output. The documented file handoff gives OBS a text source to display; no particular refresh interval is established.

- Install and open the Nightbot App for Windows or macOS using Nightbot’s instructions: Nightbot App documentation.
- Enable and customize current-song file output in the app’s Song Requests settings. Locate the resulting file in the Nightbot folder under Documents.
- In OBS, add a text source to the scene and configure it to read from the current-song file. Confirm the correct file path and save the scene.
- With a request playing, preview the scene and check that the displayed text changes when the current track changes. If it does not, verify Nightbot is controlling playback, the app is running, and the text source points to the output file.
Nightbot’s request control panel also shows track title/uploader, duration, song link, and requester. If an on-screen overlay is unnecessary, the !songs current command can report the current title in chat. See Nightbot Song Requests documentation.
Use StreamElements when viewers request the music
StreamElements’ Media Request feature is designed for viewers to add YouTube media to a queue. Use its widget when you want to show that queue or its current media on stream, rather than to identify unrelated playback. - Set up and manage the Media Request queue in StreamElements.
- Choose the Media Request widget or the documented OBS.Live browser-source integration and add it to the stream layout.
- Adjust whether video is shown; if you hide video, check whether the remaining progress bar suits your layout.
- Preview a request and queue change before the broadcast. Follow the current instructions in the StreamElements Media Request guide.
Why YouTube’s music information may not solve a live overlay
YouTube may add a “Music in this video” section to a video’s description with song and artist information. It is available only in some circumstances, including certain Content ID-claimed works or Audio Library tracks. YouTube says information can be absent when rights-holder metadata is insufficient or identification is incomplete. The feature is description metadata; YouTube’s help page does not document it as a general live overlay. See YouTube Help: Music in this video.
Keep title display separate from music rights
Showing a song title does not authorize the music for a livestream. Nightbot warns: “Streaming copyrighted music content may result in negative consequences for your stream.” Its documentation recommends using licensed or free music and restricting requests to an appropriate channel playlist. Check that you have the rights needed for the specific music and use: Nightbot App documentation.
