You can keep a YouTube encoder running from a DigitalOcean Droplet in Bangalore (BLR1) by enabling YouTube Live, securing the server, configuring an encoder with the stream URL and key, and running it under a service supervisor such as systemd. The server process can restart after a failure, but that alone does not guarantee one uninterrupted YouTube event or a single archive for an indefinite broadcast.
What “continuous” means on a VPS
A Droplet can host an encoder process continuously, sending a pre-encoded video loop or encoding a live input in software. These approaches have different CPU and input requirements: looping an already encoded file avoids the same real-time encoding workload as converting an input to a new codec or resolution. Choose based on the source, desired output, and capacity you can verify on the selected Droplet.

Process uptime and YouTube event lifecycle are separate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single event or archive will remain continuous indefinitely just because FFmpeg or another encoder process stays up. If the channel needs a multi-day broadcast, check current Live Control Room behavior and decide whether events should be scheduled or rolled over, including what watch page and archive viewers should see.

- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm that live streaming is enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Confirm that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Choose the intended privacy and event settings, and consider how you will handle event rollover if the broadcast is meant to run for multiple days.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint if your encoder build supports it. YouTube’s instructions describe retrieving the URL through the lock icon in stream settings.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in public commands, screenshots, scripts shared with others, or an article. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

Create and secure a DigitalOcean Droplet in Bangalore
- In DigitalOcean, create a Droplet and select the BLR1 region. Choose a currently available CPU plan that suits the workload; there is no universally sufficient size without knowing whether the source is pre-encoded or will be software-encoded, and without checking performance at the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Set up SSH-key authentication. Create a non-root account with sudo access for administration, and disable root password login in line with DigitalOcean’s production setup guidance.
- Apply a cloud firewall that allows only required inbound traffic—normally SSH for administration, restricted to trusted source addresses where practical. The encoder’s connection to YouTube is outbound, so do not open arbitrary inbound ports just to send the stream.
- Enable Droplet monitoring, alerts, and backups if they fit your operating requirements. DigitalOcean’s monitoring agent needs outbound access on ports 80 and 443 to report metrics.

Install and configure an encoder
FFmpeg is one option for a software encoder. This is an operational outline, not a tested deployment: no FFmpeg command or server configuration was run for this guide. Check the package and command syntax for your server operating system and FFmpeg build before using them. Avoid publishing a copy-paste command that exposes a real stream key; store credentials with appropriately restricted permissions rather than in a publicly readable script or shell history.

Choose the output settings
Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the source and the Droplet’s available CPU and network capacity. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its current H.264 examples list 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are examples for those output modes, not universal settings for every codec or source.
Configure the encoder with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, using RTMPS when supported by the selected build. Test the preview and check YouTube’s stream health before announcing the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, since a static or silent test may not expose issues in the real content.

Keep the encoder running after SSH disconnects
Do not rely on an interactive SSH terminal to keep the encoder alive. Run the process under a service supervisor such as systemd so it can start independently of your login session and be configured to restart after a failure. Build and verify the service unit for your chosen command, account, media path, and secret-storage method; an incorrect unit or restart loop can leave the stream offline even when the Droplet itself is running.

- Service state and restart behavior, including logs that show why an encoder stopped.
- Alerts for a failed service or an unhealthy YouTube stream.
- Disk space and file readability if the source media is stored on the Droplet.
- Recovery after a process restart and after a server reboot.
- The YouTube preview or watch page from another device or network, not only a local service status.
A process supervisor can relaunch an encoder, but it cannot by itself guarantee YouTube will keep the same event open, restore a broken watch page, or preserve a single archive. Test the entire path and verify the event lifecycle you intend to use.

Estimate bandwidth and Droplet transfer costs
The encoder’s stream sent to YouTube counts as outbound data from the Droplet. YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate below available upload capacity and recommends 20% headroom; network interruptions can break the stream.

For a steady bitrate of B Mbps, a 30-day estimate is approximately B × 0.0108 decimal TB, or B × 10.8 decimal GB, before audio and transport overhead or reconnects. This is a calculation from bitrate and time, not a YouTube usage statistic. For example, a steady 10 Mbps stream uses about 108 GB over 30 days by that estimate.
Compare expected traffic with the Droplet’s included outbound transfer allowance and your team’s pooled usage in DigitalOcean billing. DigitalOcean’s current pricing documentation states that additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB. The estimate above uses decimal GB; billing is in GiB, so use the billing page for the actual allowance and charge calculation.
Test before making the stream public
- Run an unlisted or private test using the same media, audio, output settings, and expected duration as the planned broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, then watch playback from another device or network.
- Stop and restart the encoder through the service supervisor. Confirm that it reconnects as intended and inspect both service logs and YouTube status.
- Reboot the Droplet and verify that the service starts correctly, the source file is available, and playback returns.
- For a multi-day stream, confirm the current event rollover and archive behavior in Live Control Room before relying on it for a public schedule.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not show an incoming stream
- Check that Live is enabled and the channel is eligible; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Verify that the encoder uses the current stream URL and key for the intended event. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
- Confirm that outbound network access works and that the encoder supports the selected RTMPS endpoint.
The stream health is poor or playback buffers
- Compare the total bitrate with available outbound capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Check for CPU saturation if the server is encoding rather than simply sending a pre-encoded file. Reduce encoding workload or choose a Droplet appropriate to the measured workload.
- Verify CBR and the keyframe cadence: YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four.
The stream stops when SSH closes or after a reboot
- Run the encoder as a managed service rather than as a foreground SSH process.
- Inspect the supervisor’s logs for command errors, missing media, permission problems, or an invalid key; verify the service is enabled at boot.
The encoder is running but the event or archive is not what you expected
Encoder uptime does not determine the full YouTube event lifecycle. YouTube’s stated automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours. Check current Live Control Room behavior and plan scheduled events or rollover for longer broadcasts rather than assuming one event and archive will persist indefinitely.
