How to Set Up a Columnar Keyboard on a Laptop Without Blocking the Screen or Trackpad

A practical guide to arranging a split columnar keyboard around a laptop while keeping the display visible, the built-in trackpad usable and your wrists and shoulders relaxed.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place the laptop first, with its display at a comfortable viewing height and its built-in trackpad still reachable. Then arrange the two columnar keyboard halves in front of, or beside, the laptop, leaving enough separation for relaxed shoulders and a near-straight wrist-to-forearm line. A pointing device can go in the gap between the halves or beside the half you use most. Do not sacrifice screen height just to fit the laptop between the halves.

The layout that works for most laptop desks

A split columnar keyboard gives you more placement choices than a conventional one-piece keyboard, but flexibility is useful only if the laptop remains usable. Start by treating the laptop display and trackpad as fixed requirements rather than objects to work around.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Center the laptop where the screen opens fully and remains easy to read.
  • Keep the laptop’s own trackpad uncovered if you still use it for scrolling, gestures, travel, or occasional pointer work.
  • Put the keyboard halves in front of the laptop or to its left and right, depending on desk depth.
  • Separate the halves until your shoulders can stay relaxed and your forearms approach the keys without a sharp bend at the wrists.
  • Use the central gap for a separate mouse or trackpad only when it remains within comfortable reach.

Kinesis uses approximately shoulder-width placement as a starting reference, not a measurement that fits every person. Your desk, torso width, keyboard geometry and preferred pointing hand all change the useful spacing. Move each half in small increments while keeping the laptop screen in the same viewing position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most common mistake is putting the laptop directly between widely separated halves without checking the display height. Kinesis warns that this arrangement can leave the screen at a suboptimal height. If the laptop has to sit lower to fit under or between the modules, the layout has solved desk width at the expense of viewing comfort.

Why a columnar split changes the desk arrangement

In a columnar keyboard, key columns are arranged to follow the fingers more directly than the staggered rows on a conventional keyboard. The split design lets each half rotate and move independently. That can reduce the need to reach inward, but it also creates separate objects that must share space with a laptop, trackpad and mouse.

Think of the desk as three zones:

  • Viewing zone: the laptop and its opening angle. Nothing should force the screen lower or obstruct the hinge.
  • Typing zones: the left and right keyboard halves. They need enough room for the elbows and wrists to approach naturally.
  • Pointing zone: the laptop trackpad, a mouse or a separate trackpad. It should be at roughly keyboard height and within a comfortable reach, as Apple states in its Mac ergonomics guidance.

A good setup preserves all three zones. If one zone is consistently blocked, change the layout instead of learning to reach around the obstruction.

Step-by-step setup

1. Set the laptop’s viewing position first

  1. Place the laptop where the hinge can open normally and the entire display is visible.
  2. Adjust the lid so the top of the screen is slightly below eye level when you are seated at the keyboard. Apple gives this as general Mac ergonomics guidance; it is a reference, not a laptop-specific measurement.
  3. Check that the lower bezel or palm rest does not cover the trackpad area you intend to use.
  4. Leave enough room behind the laptop for ventilation and cable movement if your model exhausts air near the hinge.

Do not move the laptop into a low central gap merely because the keyboard halves are far apart. If the display is too low, raise the laptop on a stable stand or choose a layout with the laptop behind the keyboard rather than between the halves.

2. Position both keyboard halves

  1. Start with both halves directly in front of the laptop, their inner edges roughly aligned with the center of your body.
  2. Place your elbows at your sides and let your forearms move forward without forcing the shoulders upward.
  3. Spread the halves until your shoulders remain relaxed. Use shoulder width as a starting point, then adjust for your own reach.
  4. Rotate each half slightly if that keeps the wrist and forearm in a near-straight line. Avoid twisting the hand sharply toward the thumb side.
  5. Type a short paragraph, then move each module a few centimeters at a time until the position feels neutral during ordinary work.

The halves do not have to be symmetrical. A person who points with the right hand may keep the right half closer and leave more room on that side for the mouse. Symmetry is less important than a comfortable reach and a clear path to the pointing device.

3. Choose where the pointing device goes

Keep the laptop trackpad in service if it is part of your workflow. If you use a separate mouse or trackpad, try one of these arrangements:

  • Middle gap: separate the halves enough to place the pointing device between them. This keeps the device centered but requires enough desk width.
  • Next to the active hand: place the device beside the half used less often for typing. This shortens the reach for frequent pointer work.
  • Missing-half position: when using only one keyboard half, Dygma suggests putting the pointing device where the other half would normally sit. Treat this as a placement idea, not a universal ergonomic rule.
  • Laptop trackpad: leave the area in front of the laptop open if gestures or travel use make the built-in surface important.

Apple’s guidance is simple: keep a mouse or trackpad at the same height as the keyboard and within comfortable reach. On a flat desk, a low-profile external trackpad usually meets that requirement more closely than a device placed on a shelf or behind the laptop.

4. Adjust tenting only after the footprint works

Tenting raises the inner or outer edge of a keyboard half to change the angle of the key surfaces. It can make a neutral wrist position easier for some people, but it does not raise the laptop display or create more desk depth. First solve the screen, trackpad and reach problems; then tune the keyboard angle.

  1. Begin with the lowest or flattest supported setting.
  2. Increase the angle in small steps while typing normally.
  3. Stop if the palms feel unstable, the wrists bend sideways, or the thumbs must reach farther than before.
  4. Use the same angle on both halves only if it feels natural; independent halves can be adjusted differently.

Hardware varies. The ZSA Voyager includes four magnetic tenting legs. The MoErgo Go60 offers optional six-step tenting. The Kinesis Advantage360 has three integrated tenting settings. These features change angle, not laptop-screen height.

5. Test the complete workflow

Use the setup for normal tasks rather than judging it after a few keystrokes. Open a document, switch windows, scroll, use keyboard shortcuts, move the pointer and reach for the laptop trackpad. Watch for these signs:

  • You reach around a keyboard half to touch the laptop.
  • The laptop must be pushed so far back that the screen becomes hard to read.
  • Your shoulders rise because the halves are too far apart.
  • Your wrists bend toward the little fingers because the modules are rotated too aggressively.
  • The mouse or trackpad is so far away that you repeatedly lean or twist.

When one of these appears, move the smallest number of objects necessary. Often a few centimeters of separation or a modest rotation fixes the problem without rebuilding the entire desk.

Five workable arrangements

Arrangement Useful when What to check
Laptop centered, halves in front You want uninterrupted access to the display and built-in trackpad. Desk depth must accommodate the laptop and both halves without forcing your elbows forward.
Laptop centered, halves to either side The desk is wide but shallow, or the laptop trackpad must remain open. Keep each half close enough that your shoulders do not spread or lift.
Laptop in the gap between widely spaced halves The screen stays at a comfortable viewing height and both halves still fit. Kinesis cautions that screen height may be suboptimal in this layout; check the display before adopting it.
Separate mouse or trackpad in the middle gap You can separate the halves while keeping the pointing device near the center. Place it at keyboard height and confirm that neither half blocks the reach.
One half plus a pointing device in the other position You are constrained by desk width or prefer one-handed layers for some tasks. Assess shoulder rotation and pointer reach individually; the suggestion is not a guarantee of comfort.

Compare layouts by footprint, half separation, display height, built-in trackpad access, pointing-device reach, keyboard angle and travel convenience. The smallest arrangement is not automatically the most usable if it forces a low screen or awkward reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the laptop must sit between the halves

This arrangement can work on a wide desk, but it has a strict condition: the laptop must remain at a comfortable viewing height. A laptop placed in the gap often ends up farther forward or lower than it would be behind the keyboard. Check the following before committing:

  • The top of the screen remains slightly below eye level while seated.
  • The lid opens to the angle you need without colliding with a keyboard half.
  • The lower laptop edge does not prevent the thumbs from reaching the keyboard.
  • The built-in trackpad is still reachable, or you have deliberately moved to an external pointing device.
  • The cable from each half can reach the laptop or hub without crossing the typing area.

If the display fails any of these checks, place the laptop behind the keyboard and use a stand or an external monitor rather than accepting a low viewing angle.

Handling a narrow or shallow desk

Use depth before width

Many laptop desks have enough width for two halves but not enough front-to-back depth for a laptop, keyboard and mouse. Move the laptop toward the rear edge first, leaving the keyboard halves in front, while ensuring the hinge and ventilation openings remain clear. If the desk is shallow, placing the halves slightly to the sides can preserve a straight path to the laptop trackpad.

Reduce the number of separate objects

A compact keyboard with an integrated pointing device can remove the need for a separate mouse or trackpad. The MoErgo Go60 is described by its manufacturer as a travel ergonomic keyboard with dual integrated 40 mm touchpads, optional six-step tenting, and Bluetooth LE and wired configurations. The BastardKB Dilemma is described as a travel-oriented split columnar keyboard with an integrated trackpad and adjustable angle.

These are form-factor examples, not proof that either model fits a particular laptop desk. Check the keyboard’s actual dimensions, the trackpad location, connection method and whether the laptop’s own trackpad remains accessible before buying.

Columnar keyboard examples and what their features mean

Example Manufacturer-stated features relevant to laptop use What the feature does not establish
ZSA Voyager A laptop-friendly 52-key split keyboard with a columnar layout, four magnetic tenting legs, and offered trackball and trackpad modules. It does not establish a tested fit for your laptop, desk or preferred pointing workflow.
MoErgo Go60 A travel ergonomic keyboard with dual integrated 40 mm touchpads, optional six-step tenting, and Bluetooth LE or wired configurations listed in its user guide. Integrated touchpads do not guarantee that the cursor position or palm support will suit every user.
BastardKB Dilemma A travel-oriented split columnar keyboard with an integrated trackpad and adjustable angle. The product description alone does not confirm compatibility with a particular operating system, cable arrangement or laptop footprint.
Kinesis Advantage360 A fully split keyboard with three integrated tenting settings. The cited product information does not establish that it is the best laptop fit or the smallest option.

Manufacturer feature descriptions explain what a model includes; they are not independent evidence of reduced pain, faster typing or universal ergonomic benefit. Treat the examples as ways to compare integrated pointing, tenting and travel-oriented designs.

Common failure modes and fixes

The screen is too low

Symptom: The laptop sits between the halves, and you tilt your head down more than before.

Fix: Move the laptop behind the keyboard or raise it on a stable stand. Do not increase tenting to solve this; tenting changes the key angle only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trackpad is blocked

Symptom: A keyboard half or central mouse occupies the area in front of the laptop.

Fix: Shift both halves forward or to the sides, or move the external pointing device beside the less-used half. If the laptop trackpad is essential, reserve its area before finalizing keyboard placement.

The shoulders feel stretched

Symptom: The halves are separated to make room for the laptop, but your elbows drift outward.

Fix: Bring the halves closer and move the pointing device to the outer side of one half. Shoulder-width spacing is only a starting reference; comfort takes priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrists twist inward or outward

Symptom: The keys are reachable only when the hands angle sharply relative to the forearms.

Fix: Rotate each half in small increments and reassess while typing, not while the hands are resting. Independent halves make slight left-right differences acceptable.

The mouse is always out of reach

Symptom: You lean or twist every time you switch from typing to pointing.

Fix: Put the device at keyboard height, closer to the active hand or in the central gap. A wider split is useful only if it does not create a long pointer reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cables cross the typing area

Symptom: The halves fit physically, but a cable runs under your wrists or blocks the laptop trackpad.

How to decide whether an integrated pointing device is worthwhile

An integrated trackpad or trackball is most useful when the desk cannot comfortably hold a separate pointing device. It can also preserve the middle gap for the laptop or another object. The trade-off is that the pointing surface is fixed to the keyboard geometry, so you lose some freedom to place it exactly where your hand prefers.

  • Choose an integrated option when desk width is the main constraint.
  • Prefer a separate mouse or trackpad when you frequently switch pointing hands or need a larger surface.
  • Check whether the integrated device sits where your palm or thumb naturally rests.
  • Confirm the connection method, operating-system support and available drivers before relying on it for travel.
  • Measure the complete keyboard, including tenting hardware and cables, rather than relying on the key count alone.

A repeatable adjustment routine

Use this short routine whenever you change laptops, desks or keyboard halves:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the laptop to your normal working angle and set the display height.
  2. Mark the laptop’s trackpad area as either available or intentionally unused.
  3. Place the keyboard halves with a moderate separation and no tenting.
  4. Set your elbows beside your torso and adjust each half until the forearms approach the keys naturally.
  5. Place the mouse or trackpad at keyboard height, then perform repeated pointer movements.
  6. Type for several minutes, including shortcuts that use both halves.
  7. Add tenting in the smallest comfortable increment, if needed.
  8. Recheck the screen, trackpad and pointer reach after every physical change.

This process prevents a common error: optimizing the keyboard angle first and discovering later that the laptop screen or pointing surface has become inaccessible.

What “ergonomic” does and does not guarantee

A split columnar keyboard can make a neutral arrangement easier to achieve because the halves can be separated and rotated. It cannot compensate for a screen that is too low, a pointing device that is too far away or a desk that is too shallow. Comfort depends on the complete workstation and on how you use it.

Kinesis makes a general statement that moderate tenting may reduce discomfort associated with forearm pronation, but the cited guidance does not identify an underlying study, publication year or quantified effect. Do not treat that statement as a measured guarantee. Increase tenting only when your own typing position feels better and remains stable during normal work.

Final setup checklist

  • The laptop display is unobstructed and remains slightly below eye level when seated.
  • The hinge opens normally and ventilation is not covered.
  • The built-in trackpad is either clear or intentionally replaced by an external device.
  • The keyboard halves are close enough for relaxed shoulders and far enough for a natural hand position.
  • Your wrists and forearms form a near-straight line as you type.
  • The mouse or trackpad is at keyboard height and within comfortable reach.
  • Tenting is used only if the keyboard supports it and the angle improves comfort.
  • No cable crosses the typing or laptop-trackpad area.
  • You have tested typing, scrolling, shortcuts and pointer work—not just the static position.

The best arrangement is usually the least dramatic one: laptop centered and visible, keyboard halves where your arms naturally fall, and the pointing device close enough that you do not reach around anything. Split hardware gives you room to make that arrangement, but the screen and trackpad should determine the final layout.
