To set up Claude Team for a startup, create or upgrade an organization in Claude, confirm who can join and how many seats signup currently requires, then assign roles and configure project visibility. Before upgrading an existing account, review where its content will live; Anthropic says content moved into an organization cannot be moved back to a personal account.
Before you start: choose the right account and organization
Claude Team creates or upgrades an organization; it is not a shared login for a personal account. Anthropic’s Team-plan setup guidance directs the organization creator to sign in through Claude’s onboarding flow with a business email and select the Team plan. Members must use an email address on an allowed organization domain.

The current signup flow should be treated as authoritative for the minimum number of seats. Current onboarding guidance says at least two members are required, while an older indexed result showed a five-member minimum. Confirm the requirement in signup before committing or planning your initial seats.

An existing Free, Pro, or Max account may be able to start from the upgrade page. Depending on the option shown and your account, you may keep a personal account separate or upgrade an existing organization. Read the migration prompt carefully before accepting: Anthropic warns, “Once content has been moved into an organization, it can’t be moved back to a personal account.”

Create the workspace and onboard members
- Sign in to Claude with the business email that will own the organization.
- Choose the Team plan in Claude’s current onboarding or upgrade flow. If you are upgrading, inspect the account and content-migration choices before confirming.
- Check the live signup screen for the required minimum seats, permitted domains, and organization details. These requirements can change.
- After the organization is created, invite teammates using addresses on an allowed organization domain. Set each person’s role according to the access they need.
Keep membership tied to individual accounts rather than passing around one login. That lets the organization manage access when a person joins or leaves.
Assign owners and admins deliberately
Claude’s organization roles have different authority. Admins can invite and remove members. Owners can also invite or remove admins and owners and modify roles. Choose at least one accountable owner for organization governance and billing administration, and avoid giving elevated access to people who only need ordinary member access.
Rank #2
Review the current role controls in Claude’s Team membership management instructions as you invite people. Revisit the membership list when staff responsibilities change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet project access without assuming chats are shared
Team projects can be private to invited members or visible to the organization when project sharing is enabled. Project visibility and chat visibility are separate: chats inside a project are not visible to other members by default, even if the project itself is organization-visible. Owners can disable project sharing.
Rank #3
Before adding startup material to a project, decide whether the project should be restricted to a specific working group or available to the organization. Check both the project’s sharing setting and the intended audience; making a project visible does not, by itself, expose every member’s chats.
See Anthropic’s project creation and management guidance for the current controls.
Check billing before choosing seats or a plan
Do not rely on an old quoted price as a current startup budget. The amount depends on factors including billing interval, seat type, geography, taxes, and any enabled usage credits; Anthropic also notes that plans and prices can change. Review the organization’s live checkout for the quote that applies to your region and configuration, and confirm which billing interval and seat type are selected.
Anthropic’s Team billing explanation includes illustrative arithmetic, not a universal current rate. Check the organization’s billing page and checkout details for the actual charge and any usage-credit settings.

When to compare Enterprise
Team is not automatically the right choice for every startup, and Enterprise is not necessary just because an organization is growing. Compare Enterprise against specific requirements such as audit logs, SCIM identity provisioning, custom retention, organization-level spend limits, connectors, or usage-based billing. The availability and terms of features can vary, so verify them with Anthropic before making a decision.
Use Anthropic’s Enterprise plan overview alongside its Team administration guidance to identify the controls your organization actually needs. Decide based on those controls and the current offer, not on the plan name alone.
