Hamachi can let friends reach a privately hosted 7 Days to Die server without configuring inbound router rules, but Hamachi is not the server itself. You still need the separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server Steam tool, a configured serverconfig.xml, a running host computer, and firewall rules that allow traffic on the Hamachi network adapter. Players then connect to the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address and the port defined in the server configuration.
For a short-term group that cannot change its router, this virtual-LAN method is practical. For a persistent world, console cross-play, or less maintenance, conventional port-forwarded hosting or a managed server is usually a better fit.

What Hamachi changes—and what it does not
Hamachi creates a virtual private network (VPN). The host and each invited player receive Hamachi addresses and appear to be on the same logical LAN. That can bypass a difficult or locked-down home router because players address the host through the virtual network rather than through the host’s public internet address.
Hamachi does not install, start, or replace the 7 Days to Die server process. The game still needs a dedicated server instance. A Steam Community dedicated-server guide documents VPN hosting as an option, while the 7 Days to Die setup documentation identifies the dedicated server as a separate Steam tool (app 294420).

What you need before starting
- A Windows 10 or newer 64-bit computer for the server, with at least 8 GB of RAM; 12 GB is the recommended game figure. A dedicated server needs additional CPU and memory headroom, especially if the same computer also runs the game client.
- At least 20 GB of storage for the game and server files, plus room for world saves, logs, and updates.
- A broadband internet connection and a stable Hamachi installation on the server computer and every player computer.
- The retail game installed for players and the separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server Steam tool installed on the host.
- Permission to install software and create an operating-system firewall rule on the host.
- A decision about whether this is a PC-only world or a console cross-play world. Cross-play has extra configuration requirements and a maximum of eight players.
Steam lists a 2.8 GHz quad-core CPU as the minimum processor requirement and warns that running a dedicated server and client on one machine effectively increases the memory requirement. Treat the minimum figures as a starting point, not a guarantee of smooth play with a large world, many entities, or several players.
Step 1: Install the dedicated server tool
- Open Steam on the computer that will remain online as the host.
- Open the Library’s tools view, find 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server, and install it. It is separate from the normal game installation and is identified in the current setup documentation as Steam app 294420.
- Choose a server folder with sufficient free space and regular backup access. Do not put world saves in a folder that is automatically cleaned or synchronized in a way that could overwrite them.
- Start the dedicated-server executable once so it can create its initial files, then stop it cleanly. Locate the generated
serverconfig.xml; edit this file rather than changing settings in a temporary command window.
The first startup can take time while files and the initial world are created. Wait for the console or log to show that the server has finished loading before testing a connection.
Step 2: Create a Hamachi network
- Install Hamachi on the dedicated-server computer and on every player’s computer.
- On the host, create a new Hamachi network and set a network ID and password that you can distribute privately.
- Have each player join that network. Confirm that every member appears online in Hamachi; an offline or relayed-looking member can be unable to reach the server even when the game configuration is correct.
- On the host, record the Hamachi IPv4 address shown by the Hamachi client. Use that address for game connections, not the host’s ordinary LAN address and not its public internet address.
Keep the Hamachi client running whenever the server is available. If the virtual network disconnects, the game server may still be running locally but will not be reachable through Hamachi.

Step 3: Configure serverconfig.xml
Open the configuration file in a text editor while the server is stopped. The exact set of available properties can change with the game version, so preserve the file’s existing structure and change only the values you understand.

Identity and world settings
- Set a distinctive server name so players can recognize the world.
- Choose the world, game mode, difficulty, day length, loot behavior, and other gameplay values for the group.
- Set the player limit to the number you actually intend to support. A lower limit reduces accidental joins and avoids allocating resources for players who will not be present.
- Decide whether the server should be publicly listed or remain private. For a Hamachi group, a private or hidden listing is normally preferable; distribute the Hamachi network credentials separately.
Networking values
The configuration reference uses ServerPort with 26900 as the default example. Keep that value unless you have a reason to change it, and make sure the firewall rule matches the active value. If you do change it, every player must use the same port when connecting.
The Fun Pimps’ support FAQ documents BasePort 26900 TCP for game details and UDP 26900–26903 for game traffic, Steam listing and communication, and LiteNetLib networking. It also documents TCP 8080 for the web dashboard and TCP 8081 for telnet administration when those optional features are enabled. Open only the services you use.
Steam’s general dedicated-server guidance separately mentions UDP 27015 as a default local gameplay port and lists broader Steam ranges. That generic guidance is not a substitute for the ports in the active 7 Days to Die configuration. When the two references differ, use the server’s configured values and the current game-specific support guidance rather than blindly opening every range.

For console cross-play, the current Help Center requirements are specific: set ServerMaxPlayerCount no higher than 8, set ServerAllowCrossplay=True, keep EACEnabled=True, and set IgnoreEOSSanctions=False. Cross-play is therefore not just a Hamachi switch; it depends on these server settings and the platforms’ current support.

The Help Center also publishes valid ranges for settings such as DayNightLength and LootRespawnDays. Stay within the documented ranges instead of assuming that any number accepted by the text editor is valid.
Step 4: Start the server and allow the firewall
- Save
serverconfig.xmland launch the dedicated-server executable. - Wait for the console or log to complete startup. A server that is still generating a world or reporting configuration errors is not ready for players.
- When the operating system asks about network access, allow the server executable on the Hamachi adapter. If no prompt appears, create or edit an inbound firewall rule manually for the configured game port and protocols.
- For the documented defaults, check the 26900 TCP rule and the UDP 26900–26903 rules. Add TCP 8080 or 8081 only if you deliberately enabled the web dashboard or telnet administration.
- Keep the firewall rule limited to the Hamachi or private network profile where possible. Do not expose administration ports to the public internet merely because the game server uses them.
A firewall rule must apply to the adapter that carries the traffic. Allowing the executable on a physical Ethernet adapter but blocking it on Hamachi can produce a server that works locally and fails for every remote player.
Step 5: Have players connect
- Confirm that the player has joined the same Hamachi network and can see the host as online.
- Give the player the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address and the configured server port. Do not send the Hamachi network password in a public chat.
- In the game’s multiplayer interface, use the direct-connect option if the server does not appear in a listing. Enter the Hamachi address and port in the format requested by the current game client.
- Test with one friend first. Once that player can load into the world, invite the remaining group members one at a time.
The host must leave both Hamachi and the dedicated-server process running. Closing the server console, logging off the machine, or allowing the computer to sleep makes the world unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting a failed connection
The server is not visible
- Use direct connection with the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address instead of relying on a public listing.
- Check that the dedicated server completed startup and is listening on the port shown in its configuration.
- Verify that the player’s Hamachi status is online and that both computers are members of the same network.
- Confirm that the firewall rule covers the Hamachi adapter and the correct TCP or UDP protocol.
The player reaches the host but is disconnected
- Compare the port entered by the player with
ServerPort; a changed port is easy to miss. - Check for duplicate or stale server processes after an update. Stop the old process, then start one clean instance.
- Review the server log for configuration errors, world-loading failures, or a player-limit rejection.
- Reduce other workloads on a computer that is hosting both the game client and the dedicated server. Steam’s recommended 12 GB of RAM is for the game, not a promise that a combined client-and-server workload will fit comfortably.
Only one player can connect
This usually points to a client-side Hamachi or firewall difference. Ask the failing player to confirm the Hamachi network membership, try the same address and port as the successful player, and check that a local security product is not blocking the server executable for that user’s network profile.

Cross-play does not work
Recheck all four documented cross-play values: ServerMaxPlayerCount at or below 8, ServerAllowCrossplay=True, EACEnabled=True, and IgnoreEOSSanctions=False. Cross-play also depends on the current game and platform versions, so a correctly edited file cannot overcome an unsupported or outdated client.
Ports: Hamachi versus normal self-hosting
Hamachi changes how players reach the host; it does not remove the need for the server to listen on its configured port or for the host firewall to permit that traffic. Because the traffic travels through the virtual adapter, you generally do not configure an inbound public-router rule for the Hamachi path.
With ordinary self-hosting, the router must forward the configured game ports to the server computer’s stable local address. The Fun Pimps’ FAQ identifies the 26900-series defaults, but the active configuration remains authoritative. Steam’s generic UDP 27015 guidance applies to Steam networking generally and should not be copied over the game-specific settings without checking the current server documentation.

When Hamachi is the right choice
- Your router is managed by an ISP, landlord, school, or employer and you cannot create forwarding rules.
- The same small group plays occasionally and accepts that the world exists only while the host is online.
- You want to keep the server private and do not need a public listing.
- You are comfortable maintaining the host computer, Hamachi membership, backups, updates, and firewall rules.
When to choose an alternative
Use port-forwarded self-hosting for a permanent home server
Reserve a stable LAN address for the server computer, forward the configured game ports from the router to that address, permit them through the host firewall, and give players the public address and port. This is the normal self-hosting path described by the game’s support guidance. It removes the requirement that every player install a VPN, but it puts router security and public exposure on you.
Best Value
Use managed hosting when availability and administration matter
A managed provider keeps the dedicated server online in its own facility and handles much of the networking, operating-system maintenance, and update work. That is useful when the owner cannot leave a home PC running, wants friends to join while the owner is away, or does not want to troubleshoot NAT and router rules. Provider capabilities, current regional pricing, backup policies, mod access, and cross-play support differ, so verify those details for the exact plan before committing. For a managed 7 Days to Die server, Godlike.Host’s 7 Days to Die hosting includes a game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7/365 support.
Backups, updates, and safe operation
- Stop the server cleanly before copying world saves or changing configuration values.
- Keep dated backups of the world and configuration file in a separate location.
- Schedule game and server updates when no one is playing, then test the world with one client before announcing that the server is open.
- Share Hamachi credentials only with the intended players and remove former players from the network.
- Do not enable the web dashboard or telnet administration unless needed; if enabled, protect those services and avoid exposing them beyond the networks that require access.
- Monitor free storage and memory. A world that starts successfully can still become unstable when saves, logs, mods, or concurrent players consume the remaining capacity.
Bottom line
To make a Hamachi server, install Steam’s separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server tool, create a shared Hamachi network, configure serverconfig.xml, start the server, allow its configured ports through the Hamachi firewall profile, and have players connect to the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address. Hamachi solves a router-access problem, not the hosting problem. Port-forwarded self-hosting is the simpler long-term home setup when you control the router; managed hosting is the lower-maintenance choice when the world must stay online without your PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can friends join without port forwarding?
Yes, a Hamachi virtual network can provide the connection path without an inbound home-router rule, but the dedicated server must still be running and the host firewall must allow its configured traffic.
What port should a 7 Days to Die server use?
The game-specific support FAQ documents BasePort 26900 TCP and UDP 26900–26903 for the default setup. Check the active ServerPort value and current game documentation before changing firewall or router rules.
How many players can use console cross-play?
The current cross-play requirements set ServerMaxPlayerCount to a maximum of eight, alongside the required cross-play, EAC, and sanctions settings.
