A successful 4K projector installation starts with the exact projector manual, not a generic distance chart. Choose the screen and seating first, calculate lens-to-screen distance from the model’s throw ratio, align the projector physically before using keystone, then connect a source that can deliver a supported 3840 × 2160 signal. Finish by tuning the picture, HDR, sound and ventilation for your room.
1. Gather the measurements and specifications that control the installation
Before drilling a mount or buying a screen, record the exact projector model and collect its installation data. Throw ratio, zoom range, lens offset, lens-shift range, supported resolutions, HDR formats and mounting points differ substantially between models. The projector’s manual and placement calculator should take priority over any general guide.

- Throw ratio and throw range: the distance from the lens to the screen required for a particular image width.
- Lens offset: how far the projected image sits above, below or beside the lens when the projector is level.
- Optical zoom and lens shift: mechanical adjustments that change size or position without resampling the image.
- Inputs and signal limits: HDMI version, maximum resolution, frame rates, HDR formats and audio-return functions.
- Installation limits: projector weight, mounting-hole pattern, permitted orientation, ventilation clearances and service access.
Write down the intended screen diagonal, aspect ratio, viewing position, power outlet, source devices and possible projector locations. Include the receiver or soundbar in the cable plan; an apparently convenient projector position can become impractical if HDMI, network or audio cables must cross a walkway.

Measure the usable wall length, ceiling height and distance between the likely screen and main seating. Note windows, reflective pale walls, lamps and any lighting that will remain on during viewing. Ambient light reduces perceived contrast, while a screen’s gain and surface color alter brightness and viewing angles. A projector that looks impressive in a dark room may appear washed out in a bright living room even when its menu settings are unchanged.

Choose the screen before final mounting
Decide on image size and screen type together. A fixed frame provides a consistently flat surface; a retractable screen is useful when the room has another purpose. Confirm the screen’s width, height, diagonal, aspect ratio and gain. A smooth, suitably colored wall can work in some rooms, but Samsung’s guidance that a screen is unnecessary applies to its cited Premiere projector and does not mean every wall performs like a dedicated screen.
Epson’s broad room-planning guidance treats screen size and seating distance as linked choices for small, medium and large rooms. Use those ranges only as starting points. Viewing preference, projector brightness, screen gain and the model’s focus and throw limits should decide the final size.
2. Calculate the image size and lens position
Use the model’s throw ratio
Throw distance is measured from the projector lens to the screen surface, not from the rear of the chassis. A simplified relationship is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Throw distance = projected image width × throw ratio.
Because zoom lenses have a range, a model may have a minimum and maximum distance for one screen size. Short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors use different geometry and may need to sit only centimetres from the wall, while a conventional long-throw unit may require several metres. Never infer an exact mounting point from screen diagonal alone.

Illustrative calculation, not a universal chart
LG publishes an example distance table based on a 1.5:1 throw ratio. Its listed distances are 3.35 m for a 100-inch diagonal and 4.02 m for a 120-inch diagonal. Those figures are examples of the calculation, not instructions for every LG projector or any other brand. Check the exact model’s calculator, account for its zoom range and measure to the lens.
| Planning item | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Screen diagonal and aspect ratio | For example, 16:9 UHD dimensions rather than diagonal alone | Determines image width and therefore throw distance |
| Throw ratio | Minimum and maximum values for the selected zoom position | Sets the permitted lens-to-screen range |
| Lens offset | Vertical and horizontal offset in the installation orientation | Determines whether a level projector can hit the screen without tilting |
| Lens shift | Vertical or horizontal range, if provided | Allows optical repositioning without keystone resampling |
| Focus range | Minimum focus distance and supported orientation | Prevents an image that is too close, too far or unevenly focused |
Account for zoom, shift and projector shape
Optical controls create installation flexibility, but they are not universal. Optoma lists 1.3× zoom and vertical lens shift for the UHZ55; those are features of that particular model. A projector without lens shift may need to be centered much more precisely, and a ceiling-mounted unit may place the image below the chassis because of its offset. Leave room behind or beside the projector for connectors and airflow, rather than placing the housing flush against a wall.

3. Place or mount the projector safely
- Mock up the location. Put the projector on a stable table or temporary platform at the calculated lens position. Display a test grid before making permanent holes.
- Check the surface and hardware. For a ceiling installation, use a mount rated above the projector’s weight, verify the mounting pattern and follow the manual’s permitted orientation. Do not assume a universal mount fits every chassis.
- Keep the lens path clear. Make sure lights, fans, shelves and people cannot interrupt the beam. Avoid placing the unit where a door or curtain can move into the optical path.
- Reserve ventilation space. Do not cover intake or exhaust vents. Leave the clearances specified by the manual and make filters or service panels accessible after installation.
- Plan power and signal routes. Provide an accessible outlet and route HDMI, network and audio cables without sharp bends, tension or trip hazards.
- Secure the final installation. After the test image is correct, tighten the mount or position the projector on a non-slip, level surface. Recheck alignment after the projector has reached operating temperature.
4. Align the image physically before applying digital correction
Digital keystone and multi-point warping alter pixels to make a skewed image look rectangular. They can reduce effective sharpness, so treat them as small finishing adjustments rather than a substitute for correct placement. LG’s setup guidance recommends levelling the projector and adjusting its physical position before digital correction.
- Level the chassis. Use the projector’s feet or mount adjustments so the body is not rolled or pitched. A tilted projector creates trapezoid distortion and uneven focus.
- Aim squarely at the screen. Position the lens on the screen’s horizontal centreline where the model permits. Keep the lens face parallel to the screen; do not point the projector upward or sideways to compensate for a bad location.
- Set rough size with optical zoom. Adjust zoom until the image approaches the screen borders. Do not use digital image-size controls when optical zoom is available.
- Use lens shift, if fitted. Move the image vertically or horizontally while keeping the projector level. Stay within the model’s specified shift range; extreme positions can affect uniformity or focus.
- Focus from the centre outward. Display fine text or a test grid. Adjust focus slowly until centre detail is crisp, then inspect all four corners. If one side is soft, revisit squareness, stability and placement range before adding warping.
- Apply only residual correction. Use horizontal or vertical keystone, followed by multi-point correction if the model offers it, for small remaining errors. Recheck fine text and a UHD test pattern because correction can make edges look softer.
5. Build a compatible 4K signal chain
Connect a streaming player, game console, disc player, computer or AV receiver to an HDMI input that supports the desired format. The source, cable, receiver and projector must all accept the same resolution, frame rate and HDR mode. A connector that physically fits does not guarantee that the signal will pass.
| Component | Check before connecting | Typical action |
|---|---|---|
| Playback device | 4K output, frame-rate options and HDR support | Enable a supported UHD mode after the projector is detected |
| HDMI cable | Bandwidth for the chosen resolution, frame rate and HDR | Replace only if the existing cable fails the intended signal |
| AV receiver or switch | Pass-through support for the same video and audio formats | Test the chain directly to the projector if the receiver causes a blank screen |
| Projector input | Which HDMI port supports 4K, HDR, ARC or eARC | Use the port identified in the exact model manual |
LG’s general guidance refers to HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 according to the projector’s capability. That does not mean every installation needs HDMI 2.1. The correct cable is the one that reliably carries the source’s selected format through every device in the chain. Use short, well-routed cables where practical, and avoid adding adapters that introduce another compatibility point.

Set the source to UHD
- Select the projector’s HDMI input and allow the source device to complete its display handshake.
- Open the source’s display settings and choose a supported 4K UHD output. Optoma describes UHD as 3840 × 2160.
- Choose a frame rate supported by both devices. If the screen goes blank, temporarily select 1080p, reconnect or bypass the receiver, and then test a lower-bandwidth 4K mode.
- Play known HDR and non-HDR content. Confirm that the projector reports the expected signal rather than merely showing an upscaled image.
- Turn on HDMI-CEC or device control only if you want the linked power and input behavior; these features can complicate troubleshooting.
6. Tune picture, focus and HDR for the room
Start with a restrained picture mode
Select the projector’s film, cinema or similarly named mode as a starting point. It is usually closer to a home-cinema presentation than a vivid or dynamic mode, but the labels and processing differ by model. Disable excessive sharpening, frame interpolation or noise reduction if they make film motion look artificial; retain a feature when it improves the particular content you watch.
Adjust in a useful order
- Brightness: set black-level visibility with a dark test scene so shadow detail is not crushed, while avoiding a grey-looking black floor.
- Contrast: raise white level until highlights are bright but cloud detail, subtitles and bright clothing do not clip.
- Color temperature: use a neutral or warm preset first. Change it only when the image has an obvious blue, green or red cast.
- Color and tint: make small changes with familiar skin tones and test material. A wall or screen with a color cast may require a different approach than a neutral screen.
- Sharpness: increase cautiously. Halos around text or objects indicate over-sharpening, not extra 4K detail.
No universal brightness, contrast or HDR slider values are established for every projector, screen and room. Record your preferred settings separately for SDR, HDR and gaming if the projector supports picture memories.
Verify HDR rather than assuming it
Use an HDR source and compatible content to check the projector’s HDR indication. If HDR appears too dark or washed out, confirm that the source, receiver and HDMI input all support the same HDR format before changing sliders. Different projectors map HDR differently, and a setting that works on one model can remove highlight detail on another. Compare with a known SDR scene to ensure the source has not silently switched modes.
7. Configure sound, network and smart functions
Decide where audio should be decoded before you hide cables. Built-in speakers can be adequate for casual viewing, but a soundbar or receiver usually provides better dialogue placement and surround performance.
| Audio route | When it makes sense | Checks |
|---|---|---|
| Projector speakers | Temporary or simple installations | Set volume and confirm the source is not muted |
| Source to receiver, receiver to projector | Receiver handles surround sound and video switching | Verify video pass-through, HDCP and the receiver’s supported formats |
| Projector HDMI ARC/eARC to soundbar or receiver | Sources connect to the projector and audio returns over HDMI | ARC/eARC availability and formats are model-dependent; use the labelled port and enable the relevant menu option |
| Optical or analogue output | Older sound equipment without ARC/eARC | Check supported channel count and set the source to a compatible output |
Optoma’s support guidance identifies ARC and eARC as model-dependent functions. Test speech, bass, surround channels and lip-sync delay with the equipment you will actually use. If audio is late, bypass unnecessary processing, test the source directly and then add a small projector or receiver delay.

The image is a trapezoid
The projector is not level or is not square to the screen. Reposition and level it, then use lens shift. Apply keystone only after the physical correction is complete.
One corner or side is soft
Check that the lens is parallel to the screen, the projector has not moved and the focus mechanism is within its permitted range. A curved wall, screen tension problem or excessive warping can also make one region appear soft.
The image is too large or too small
Measure from the lens, confirm the screen width and re-enter the exact model’s throw calculation. Use optical zoom within its range. If the required distance falls outside that range, move the projector or select a different screen size; do not rely on digital resizing.

9. Choose an installation approach by room
| Room situation | Priority | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated dark cinema | Contrast, quiet operation and precise alignment | Use a fixed screen, controlled lighting, a carefully centred mount and a film picture mode |
| Living room with daylight | Brightness, screen gain and light control | Reduce window light, choose a suitable screen surface and avoid selecting an oversized image |
| Short viewing distance | Placement geometry and wall clearance | Consider a short-throw or ultra-short-throw design and follow its specialised calculator |
| Shared room with retractable screen | Repeatable setup and cable concealment | Mark the screen centre and projector position, then use lens shift rather than frequent keystone changes |
| Gaming-focused room | Input compatibility, frame rate and latency | Verify the console’s desired mode through the entire HDMI chain before fixing the mount |
