You can loop a prerecorded video through OBS Studio on a Linux mini PC and send it to YouTube Live at 3840×2160 and 60 fps. The setup is straightforward; the uncertain part is whether your particular mini PC, Linux drivers, OBS build, cooling and internet connection can sustain it. Confirm the encoder is available, use YouTube’s settings for the codec you select, and run a sustained rehearsal before relying on the stream.
Before you start
Prepare the channel and computer before the broadcast. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable, so do not leave that step until the scheduled start. A computer with an encoder listed as supported is not automatically capable of continuous 4K60 streaming: the workload also depends on the software build, drivers, resolution, frame rate, scene and sustained cooling.

- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to Live Control Room.
- A Linux mini PC with a compatible OBS Studio installation, a supported encoder that appears in OBS, and adequate cooling.
- The video file or files you intend to loop, with suitable resolution, frame rate, audio and color.
- A stable upstream internet connection with practical headroom above the selected video bitrate.
Enable YouTube Live and get the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. Complete this in advance if this will be the channel’s first live stream; YouTube says initial enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room and retrieve the stream URL and stream key.
- Keep the key private. Enter it only in OBS on the mini PC. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the key in OBS.
Install OBS Studio on Linux
Install OBS using the instructions appropriate to your Linux distribution. OBS recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu and documents an Ubuntu installation path. Its Linux basic requirements include OpenGL 3.3 and the X Window System or Wayland. Package contents and available encoders can differ, so check the installed build rather than assuming a particular encoder is present.
Choose how the video will loop
One video file: Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
- Select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties.
- Preview playback and confirm the picture and audio behave as expected when the file reaches its end and restarts.
A playlist: VLC Video
- Install VLC and a matching VLC package for the OBS installation.
- Add a VLC Video source and load the playlist of local files.
- Enable Loop Playlist and check playback through the transitions between files.
OBS documents these loop controls, but they do not guarantee gapless transitions or uninterrupted multi-day operation. Check each file’s resolution, frame rate, audio and color against the output you plan to send.

Set YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists the following bitrate values for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. They are recommendations for YouTube ingest, not evidence that a particular mini PC or connection can sustain them. The help page does not display a publication year; the figures below are from the current page retrieved on October 3, 2026.

Use the guidance for the codec actually selected in OBS. YouTube also specifies RTMP or RTMPS transport, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, it recommends Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. Audio may use AAC or MP3; YouTube’s advanced settings list 128 Kbps for stereo audio.

- Set the OBS output to 3840×2160 and 60 fps.
- Select a codec and encoder supported by both your installed OBS build and YouTube. Confirm that the chosen hardware encoder is actually available in OBS.
- Set bitrate using the matching codec row above, select CBR, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds.
- Configure the YouTube service and RTMPS stream URL in OBS, then enter the stream key from Live Control Room.
- For SDR content, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit where those controls are available. Choose an audio codec supported by the setup.
For 4K/2160p, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency.
Check whether the mini PC can sustain the stream
Verify encoder and driver support
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC support on Linux for GeForce 750 Ti/900-series (Maxwell) or newer, with the latest GPU drivers needed. It lists Intel Quick Sync Video support on Linux for Intel Core-i CPU 2xxx or newer and recommends Core-i 4xxx or newer because earlier generations had lower quality. These compatibility statements do not certify any mini PC for continuous 4K60. Check the specific processor or GPU, firmware, Linux driver and OBS build, then verify that the intended encoder appears in OBS.

Hardware encoding shifts work from the CPU to specialized GPU components and can reduce CPU impact, but support for an encoder name alone does not prove adequate performance at your target settings. Software encoding may place a heavy load on the CPU. OBS notes that having a compatible system does not guarantee streaming or recording capability; needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
Test the whole path under load
- Start a rehearsal with the actual video, audio, scene, resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you intend to use.
- Run it long enough to expose problems that appear only under sustained load. Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, overheating, audio interruptions and media-source stalls.
- Check that upstream bandwidth remains consistently above your stream bitrate with practical headroom. Use YouTube’s stream-health test and monitor its messages.
- Keep Live Control Room available during the rehearsal and the broadcast so you can see stream health.
YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream. A speed check alone cannot establish that the entire setup will remain stable during a long broadcast.

Go live and plan for interruptions
- Start the stream from OBS and confirm that Live Control Room receives it and reports healthy video and audio.
- Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health after going live, especially during the first loop transition and while the mini PC is warm from sustained operation.
- Before leaving the stream unattended, decide how you will respond to internet or power loss, operating-system updates, OBS crashes and missing or stalled source files.
A local OBS setup depends on the mini PC, its power, Linux and OBS staying available, as well as the network. The cited OBS source documentation describes loop controls; it does not establish continuous uptime or automatic recovery for this arrangement.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The encoder option is missing: Check the mini PC’s actual CPU or GPU, Linux driver, OBS installation and package build. Update or install the appropriate driver and verify the encoder appears in OBS before scheduling a broadcast.
- OBS reports encoder overload or frames are dropped: Check CPU/GPU load, temperature and the selected encoder. Reduce scene complexity or test a lower output workload; do not assume a mini PC can sustain 4K60 based only on its advertised processor or encoder family.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare OBS’s codec and bitrate with YouTube’s corresponding recommendations, verify CBR and the keyframe interval, and test whether the upstream connection stays above the selected bitrate with headroom.
- The stream will not connect: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the RTMPS URL and service are correct, and the current stream key was copied accurately. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
- The video stops instead of repeating: For a single file, confirm that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, check that VLC is installed, the playlist loads and Loop Playlist is enabled.
- There is a gap or interruption between playlist items: Test the actual files and transitions. OBS’s documented loop setting does not promise gapless playback.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong: Check the source files against the chosen output resolution and frame rate, inspect audio playback and levels, and verify SDR color settings such as Rec. 709 and 8-bit where applicable.
Check content rights and YouTube rules
Looping a file does not change the rights needed to broadcast it. Use footage, music and other material you created or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright rules before going live. A technically healthy stream is not a guarantee that its content complies with YouTube policies or will qualify for monetization. Avoid assuming that repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material is acceptable merely because OBS can loop it.
