The basic process is to launch an Ubuntu instance, install a desktop environment and OBS, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, configure and test the encoder, then monitor the broadcast.
What you need before you begin
- An AWS account and an EC2 instance in a Region you choose. Cost depends on the instance, operating system, storage, network configuration, and runtime.
- A Linux distribution and graphics setup that meet OBS’s requirements. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and X or Wayland for Linux, and cautions that meeting compatibility requirements does not guarantee enough encoding performance. Scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, and encoder choice also affect the workload. See OBS system requirements.
- A way to access and maintain a graphical desktop on the VM. A bare headless server should not be assumed to provide the X or Wayland session OBS requires. The sources cited here do not prescribe a remote-desktop product or a secure port configuration, so choose and secure that separately.
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live, a video or scene to broadcast, and rights to all video, audio, and other material used. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and content policies before going live.
Set up the EC2 machine and graphical desktop
- Choose the workload before the instance size. Estimate the output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and OBS scene complexity. There is no single EC2 size established as sufficient for every OBS stream. Graphics compatibility is not the same as encoding capacity.
- Launch an Ubuntu instance. In the AWS EC2 console, start the instance launch flow, select an Ubuntu AMI, choose an instance type, configure storage and networking, select or create a key pair, and launch. Canonical’s Ubuntu EC2 launch guide describes choosing an AMI, key pair, and instance type, then launching and checking the instance. Its guide is one documented route, not a recommendation of a particular size.
- Install and secure a graphical environment. Set up a desktop session that provides X or Wayland and a secure method for remote access. Restrict network access to the addresses and ports you actually need; do not expose remote desktop access broadly. The exact desktop, remote-access software, and firewall rules depend on your operating environment and are not specified in the referenced OBS and Ubuntu instructions.
- Install OBS using its current official instructions. OBS’s Linux guide lists a package-repository method for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions. That page is dated 2021, so check the current distribution compatibility and installation instructions before using it: OBS Linux installation.
- Open OBS inside the graphical session. Complete initial setup, then create or select the scene and sources you intend to stream. Test the actual scene and encoder on the chosen VM; an application opening successfully does not show that the machine can encode continuously at the target quality.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, or select an existing stream, then obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the workflow.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube or the available custom server option, and enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Labels may vary with OBS version and the connection method selected.
- Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that lets an encoder connect to your broadcast. Do not paste it into public notes, scripts, screenshots, or repositories. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio; see YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Start with the stream set to private or unlisted if you want to validate the connection before a public broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before you make the stream public.
Configure OBS for YouTube’s encoder recommendations
Use YouTube’s current settings guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; the values below are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode successfully.
| Setting | Starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s general encoder recommendations specify constant bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Video codec | H.264 is a general supported choice | Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult the current table rather than copying a value across formats. |
| H.264 video bitrate example | 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps | This is YouTube’s stated recommendation for that specific combination, not a measured outcome or universal setting. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Use the current YouTube encoder guidance for the complete audio settings. |
In OBS, open Settings and review Output for encoder and bitrate controls, and Video for output resolution and frame rate. The exact available encoder choices depend on the VM’s graphics and software environment. If the machine cannot sustain the chosen output, lower the workload or choose a better-suited instance and test again. YouTube’s complete, potentially updated recommendations are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test the stream before leaving it on
- In YouTube Studio, confirm that the selected stream is receiving a signal and inspect the preview and stream-health status.
- Run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static test image may not reveal the same encoding load as the real scene.
- Check that the EC2 machine can sustain the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for an extended test. Monitor CPU or other relevant instance resources and watch for dropped frames or connection warnings.
- Allow upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends approximately 20% spare upload bandwidth; confirm the VM’s available network capacity rather than assuming it from the instance name.
- Test what happens if OBS exits, the desktop session ends, or the VM reboots or loses connectivity. YouTube recommends testing failover where applicable, but the official material cited here does not provide a complete OBS-on-EC2 restart, alerting, or failover design.
For YouTube’s preview, network, and testing advice, see Streaming tips and the encoder settings guide.

Plan recovery: a running VM alone is not a 24/7 guarantee
OBS running in a logged-in graphical session is only one part of continuity. A closed session, OBS crash, instance reboot, network interruption, or YouTube ingest disconnect can stop the broadcast. The official guidance cited here does not specify a service manager, automatic restart configuration, monitoring system, alerting process, or failover design for OBS on EC2, and does not certify an instance size or uptime for this stack.
- Decide how OBS should start after a reboot and how it should be restarted after a crash. Implement the method appropriate for your desktop and operating-system setup, then test it; do not assume that logging out or rebooting leaves OBS running.
- Decide how someone will detect a stopped stream, failed encoder, or unhealthy ingest, and who will respond. Validate notifications and recovery rather than treating them as available by default.
- Test both application-level recovery and host-level recovery. A restart of OBS does not help if the VM or its network is unavailable.
- Keep recovery credentials and stream keys protected. If you reset a key, update the OBS configuration that uses it.
Understand costs and archive limits
AWS costs depend on your configuration
There is no defensible fixed monthly EC2 price without the Region, instance family and size, operating system, storage, network setup, and actual runtime. AWS charges for instance usage and has separate data-transfer considerations; its pricing page describes On-Demand billing, including per-second billing for several operating-system families with a 60-second minimum. Rates and applicable details can change, so estimate the specific configuration with AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing before committing. Include compute, operating-system charges where applicable, disk storage, and data transfer in your estimate.

Do not assume a continuous stream becomes one permanent archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited encoder guide does not establish the archive result for a single stream that runs longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions and verify current YouTube behavior before relying on a recording. See YouTube’s encoder workflow and archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not open or reports a graphics problem | The Linux graphics stack or desktop session may not meet OBS’s requirements. | Confirm an X or Wayland session and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics are available, then check OBS’s current system requirements. These are compatibility requirements, not proof of adequate encoding performance. |
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Stream URL, key, selected YouTube stream, or network connection. | Compare the OBS connection details with the values for the intended stream in YouTube Studio, check the Live Control Room, and reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health warns about connection or bitrate | Network capacity, bitrate, or ingest configuration. | Check that RTMPS and the appropriate bitrate are selected, verify available upload capacity with the recommended headroom, and test again with the real scene. |
| Dropped frames or an unstable encode | Insufficient compute or network capacity for the configured workload. | Compare resource use with the scene’s resolution, frame rate, encoder, and complexity. Reduce the workload or select a more capable configuration, then run another sustained test; no universal EC2 size is established. |
| The broadcast stops after logout, crash, or reboot | OBS session lifecycle and missing recovery automation. | Review the startup and restart design for the chosen desktop and OS, then deliberately test logout, process failure, and reboot behavior. The instance being powered on does not by itself establish that OBS is broadcasting. |
| The stream runs but no expected archive appears | Continuous session duration and YouTube archive behavior. | Check the session duration and YouTube’s current archive guidance. Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours; do not assume the same result for a longer continuous broadcast. |
