You can keep a prerecorded video streaming to YouTube from a Windows VPS by creating a YouTube encoder stream, sending its stream key to FFmpeg, and running FFmpeg under a Windows process supervisor that can restart it after a failure. The VPS must have enough sustained upload capacity and encoding resources for your chosen settings; this setup is not an uptime guarantee. Here is the full do-it-yourself workflow, including a looping command, YouTube’s ingest requirements, verification, and failure checks.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance: YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guide.
- A Windows VPS that can stay powered on, run FFmpeg, read your media files, and sustain the required outbound connection. Check the VPS provider’s Windows version, CPU capacity, sustained traffic terms, and access to startup and process-management settings.
- A prerecorded video file or a prepared playlist, and an FFmpeg build with the encoders you intend to use.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s password and address.
The exact YouTube Studio labels may change. Use the current screen shown for your channel rather than relying on an old menu path.

Create the YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule a stream using the encoder option.
- In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key presented for that stream. Use the endpoint and protocol YouTube provides; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest.
- Store the key in a restricted script or configuration location accessible only to the Windows account that runs FFmpeg. Do not include it in screenshots, public logs, or shared command examples.
- If the key is exposed or stops working, reset or replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s guidance is at Manage live stream settings.
Choose compatible video, audio, and bandwidth settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and must not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate recommendation for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one figure as universal. For example, YouTube’s table lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps at 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate and 5 Mbps minimum. Check the current table at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
YouTube transcodes incoming video for different playback formats, but you still need to send a stable, compatible source. YouTube recommends testing with similar motion and audio before a real broadcast and having upload capacity for the primary stream plus a backup, with 20% additional headroom. Measure outbound capacity from the VPS; a download-speed result does not establish that the server can sustain the required upload.

Stream-copy or re-encode?
- Stream-copy: avoids video encoding and therefore reduces CPU demand, but only works when the source streams, codecs, and container are compatible with the output YouTube expects. It gives you less control over the outgoing profile.
- Re-encode: lets you set codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval, but consumes VPS CPU. Test the actual file and profile on the chosen VPS rather than assuming a plan can encode it in real time.
Loop one file or rotate a playlist?
For one video, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option can repeat the input. For multiple files, the concat demuxer can read a list in order, but its inputs need compatible streams, codecs, time bases, and stream layout. Incorrect durations in the list can cause timestamp gaps or artifacts. Normalize files beforehand or use a concat-filter and re-encode approach when the sources differ. Run a looping file with FFmpeg
This is an illustrative template, not a tested command. Replace the paths and YouTube endpoint with the values for your VPS and Live Control Room. It re-encodes video with libx264, encodes audio with AAC, and loops one MP4. Confirm your FFmpeg build includes libx264, check that the source has the expected audio and video tracks, and test privately or unlisted before relying on it.

Match the bitrate and output profile to YouTube’s table and your measured VPS upload capacity. The -g 60 setting at 30 fps requests a two-second GOP, matching YouTube’s recommended keyframe interval; confirm the output behavior with the stream preview and health indicators. Use a Windows process supervisor appropriate to the VPS image—such as a carefully configured startup task or service wrapper—and test it on that specific Windows Server version. The available documentation does not establish one universal Windows Server configuration, so verify the supervisor’s settings and behavior for your host.

- Run FFmpeg as a Windows account with read access to media and write access to logs.
- Use absolute file paths and a known working directory so startup does not depend on an interactive session.
- Include
-nostdinso FFmpeg does not wait for console input when running as a background task. FFmpeg’s FAQ also documents redirecting standard input fromNULon Windows. - Configure a restart delay and prevent duplicate FFmpeg processes. Capture error output and alert on repeated failures rather than restarting rapidly without visibility.
- Test both a process exit and a VPS reboot. A process restart policy will not repair an invalid stream key, missing input file, suspended VPS, or inadequate network connection.
Background execution and recovery are different jobs: -nostdin prevents a console-input check; it does not restart a crashed encoder or bring a host back after a reboot. FFmpeg also documents FIFO muxer recovery options, but those options are not a substitute for testing your Windows supervisor and end-to-end stream.
Verify the stream before relying on it
- Start FFmpeg and open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Wait for YouTube to receive the feed, then inspect the preview for the correct picture, motion, and audio before making the stream public.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm the watch page behaves as intended. YouTube advises monitoring quality during a stream; its live-stream guidance is at Live encoder settings.
- On the VPS, review FFmpeg’s exit status and logs, CPU and memory use, outbound network graphs, disk space, and continued access to the input file.
- Repeat the test after changing the video, bitrate, stream key, FFmpeg build, or VPS startup configuration.
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. A 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as one indefinitely growing archive: check YouTube’s current behavior, plan how you will end and recreate a stream if needed, and keep a local copy if you need your own recording. Troubleshoot common failures

Cost and an alternative to maintaining a VPS
A Windows VPS has ongoing hosting costs and requires you to manage media, FFmpeg, Windows startup behavior, updates, logs, and recovery. Compare plans on sustained outbound traffic terms, CPU capacity, supported Windows versions, and process-management access. Encoding requirements depend on your source and output settings, so test the intended workload rather than assuming a listed VPS specification proves it will sustain a profile.
