Before you start: confirm YouTube can go live
Check the channel in YouTube before configuring Muvi. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the broadcast and confirm live streaming is enabled.
- Allow time for first-time activation; do not assume a newly enabled channel can broadcast immediately.
- Decide whether you need an ongoing live feed, a recorded archive, or both. A continuous stream has different archive implications than a short event.
Choose how the feed will reach YouTube
There are two possible routes to investigate in your Muvi account. They are not interchangeable, and the precise current YouTube routing steps are not established by Muvi’s general encoder setup instructions.

Documented setup: send an encoder feed to Muvi Live
- Create the Muvi Live stream. In the Muvi dashboard, create a stream in the content/library area, enter the requested metadata and options, and start the stream server. Open the stream information and copy its server URL and stream key. Muvi’s instructions describe this sequence; dashboard labels can change, so follow the labels currently shown in your account. See Muvi’s live-stream setup help.
- Configure an encoder such as OBS. Create a scene and add the video and audio sources you intend to broadcast. In OBS, choose a custom streaming service, paste the Muvi server URL into the server field and the Muvi key into the stream-key field, then apply the settings. Other encoders may use different labels. Muvi’s documented example uses OBS software encoding; it does not establish a need for a camera, capture card, or particular hardware.
- Set the video and audio format. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as the output baseline, then select values that match your resolution, frame rate, codec, and upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate; that is a format-specific recommendation, not a target for every stream. Review YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates for other formats and supported codecs.
- Start the encoder after the Muvi server is active. Start streaming from OBS (or your chosen encoder) only after Muvi’s stream server is running. Then confirm that Muvi receives the feed and that it reaches YouTube through the route you verified.
- Preview and test before making it public. Check the picture, audio, stream health, YouTube watch page, and playback on a phone. Use representative motion and sound, not only a static test screen. YouTube’s live control tools show stream health; monitor them during the test and again after launch.
Set bitrate and network capacity for a continuous broadcast
Estimate capacity from the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, including audio, and check upload speed rather than download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate; the stream’s total bitrate must remain within available upload bandwidth. Its guidance also favors a reliable connection and testing before a real broadcast. See YouTube’s network and encoder tips.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your content and connection can sustain continuously; a higher setting is not automatically better if the connection cannot hold it.
- Use a wired network for a fixed encoder setup if practical. Ethernet is an option for reliability, not a YouTube or Muvi requirement; no particular cable category is established as necessary.
- Test at the intended bitrate for long enough to catch instability. A brief successful preview does not prove the connection will sustain a full-time stream.
- For a true always-on service, test the actual recovery process, including any backup encoder or network path you have configured. Do not assume a backup exists unless you have set it up and tested it.
Protect the YouTube stream key
Treat the YouTube stream key like a password: it identifies and authorizes the stream. Do not show it in screenshots, public tutorials, or shared documents. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update whichever encoder or destination uses it. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Keep the Muvi stream URL and key private as well. Use only the intended account’s credential fields, and verify in the current Muvi workflow whether YouTube credentials are stored in Muvi or entered elsewhere.
Plan for drops, archives, and ongoing charges
Recovery and monitoring
A 24/7 broadcast needs a response plan for encoder, network, Muvi server, or YouTube interruptions. During testing, deliberately confirm what happens if the encoder stops or connectivity fails, and identify where the stream can be restarted. Monitor YouTube stream health and the viewing page after launch; the reviewed setup material does not establish an automatic recovery guarantee for this Muvi configuration.

Recording and YouTube archives
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream intended to run continuously may not be captured as one automatic archive under that rule. Arrange a separate recording if you need a complete VOD, and check current YouTube behavior before relying on automatic archiving.
Muvi active-server cost
Muvi’s product FAQ states a charge of $0.50 per hour while its dedicated live-streaming server is active. That figure is from Muvi’s FAQ as accessed October 3, 2026; commercial terms can change. Confirm the current price, subscription inclusions, and any infrastructure charges with Muvi before leaving a server active continuously. At the stated hourly rate, continuous operation can make active time a material cost, so verify how billing is counted for your account.
