Short answer: Akamai’s documented Linode setup uses OBS on your computer to send video to a Linode-hosted RTMP relay, which then forwards it to YouTube. That is different from running OBS itself continuously on a Linode VM. The official guides covered here do not establish that OBS-on-Linode is a supported, unattended 24/7 setup, so this guide explains the documented relay architecture and its limits rather than presenting an unverified headless-OBS recipe.
Choose the right architecture first
There are two distinct ways to involve Linode in a YouTube stream:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Documented relay setup: OBS runs on your computer, sends the stream to an RTMP server on a Linode Compute Instance, and that server forwards it to YouTube. Akamai’s RTMP-server tutorial describes this pattern.
- OBS running directly on Linode: the VM would have to run OBS, encode continuously and recover unattended after failures or reboots. The reviewed Akamai and OBS documentation does not establish a supported setup or specify the VM size and service configuration needed for it.
The relay can add a cloud-hosted hop, but it does not make the documented setup independent of your computer: OBS is still running locally. If you need the broadcast to continue with your computer off, the relay recipe alone does not meet that requirement.

- Confirm eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days and meet its minimum age requirement of 16 to live stream.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create the stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the ingest details securely. Use the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. YouTube’s ordinary RTMP address may appear by default; where available, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS address. RTMPS is YouTube’s TLS-encrypted form of RTMP.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public screenshots, logs, shared documents or example configurations. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room before broadcasting.
Build the documented Linode relay path
- Create a Linode Compute Instance. Akamai’s RTMP tutorial is based on Ubuntu 20.04. Follow that tutorial’s relay installation and configuration steps for the instance and operating system it documents; do not assume that its commands or package choices apply unchanged to another distribution or release.
- Configure the relay’s YouTube destination. In the relay configuration, enter the YouTube ingest URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Keep the key private on the server. Use the URL appropriate to the relay’s supported configuration; do not substitute a guessed server name or assume the OBS-to-relay address is the same as YouTube’s ingest address.
- Start the relay and note its OBS ingest details. Use the server address and any stream name or key specified by the relay setup. The OBS connection must target the Linode relay; the relay, not OBS, forwards the stream to YouTube.
- Connect OBS on your computer. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the custom-server option if needed, then enter the relay’s server address and stream key exactly as configured. Save the settings.
- Start the stream and confirm both hops. Start streaming in OBS. Check that the relay is receiving the feed and that YouTube Live Control Room shows a preview and healthy incoming stream. Then check the public watch page, including playback on a phone, before relying on the broadcast.
Akamai’s tutorial says a 1GB Linode is sufficient for a single stream in its particular RTMP relay example. That is a scoped example for the relay workload—not a sizing recommendation for encoding video in OBS on a VM, nor a guarantee for every resolution, traffic pattern or workload.

Set OBS and YouTube encoding settings
Set the encoder profile to match the resolution, frame rate, codec and available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s current published H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps, with 5 Mbps listed as the minimum. Do not apply that bitrate automatically to a different resolution or frame rate; use YouTube’s settings for the format you actually select.
- Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Use RTMPS where the selected encoder and relay path support it.
- Rate control: YouTube lists CBR as the recommended bitrate mode.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; YouTube says the interval must not exceed four seconds.
- Bandwidth: YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. The available upload capacity must cover the stream’s total bitrate and any other traffic. Test the actual path rather than assuming a Linode plan provides a particular sustained throughput.
For the relay architecture, check the capacity of both legs: your computer’s upload to Linode and the Linode relay’s outbound connection to YouTube. A bottleneck on either leg can affect the broadcast.

Test monitoring, recovery and the archive before going 24/7
- Verify the preview and health indicators. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the stream and inspect its stream-health feedback before treating the setup as ready.
- Check playback independently. Open the public watch page from another device or network and confirm that audio and video are playing as intended.
- Test failure handling. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network. If your own setup has a recovery procedure, test it deliberately; the existence of a relay does not prove OBS or the full path will restart itself.
- Verify local recordings if you use them. Check that the archive files exist and play correctly rather than assuming a recording succeeded.
- Plan for long-stream archiving. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour stream exceeds that stated window, so do not count on one complete VOD covering the full day. The cited guidance does not specify how every longer broadcast will be handled.
What the guides do—and do not—establish about OBS on a Linode
Akamai describes Compute Instances as virtual machines that run supported Linux distributions. Its RTMP tutorial uses a Linode-hosted server as a relay and OBS as a client on the streamer’s own computer. A separate Akamai LiveKit guide likewise places OBS on the local streaming machine, not on the cloud instance. Neither is proof of a supported, unattended OBS encoder running directly on a Linode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOBS’s Linux installation guidance includes graphics-related requirements, including OpenGL 3.3 or later and an X server recommendation for some features. Those requirements make the display and session arrangement relevant, but they do not establish that every virtual-display or headless configuration is unsupported. The available guidance does not provide a verified system-service recipe, recovery procedure or sustained-encoding benchmark for direct OBS-on-Linode operation.

If you still want to investigate OBS directly on a VM, validate the graphics/display session, sustained encoder performance at your target format, behavior after a reboot or process failure, and the instance and network costs before treating it as a 24/7 system. Do not use the relay tutorial’s 1GB example as evidence that the same instance can encode continuously.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube never receives a preview: confirm that OBS is sending to the relay address and key, that the relay is running, and that its YouTube destination uses the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- The stream key stops working: check that OBS and the relay are using the key for the current broadcast. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the relay configuration securely.
- Connection is unstable or stream health is poor: check available upload capacity on both the OBS-to-Linode and Linode-to-YouTube legs. Reduce the selected bitrate if it exceeds reliable capacity, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The stream looks wrong despite a connection: check that the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, codec and keyframe interval match YouTube’s guidance for the chosen format.
- The stream stops when the computer is shut down: that is expected for the documented relay arrangement, because OBS is on the local computer. A Linode relay does not itself replace the encoder.
- A long broadcast is missing or split in the archive: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee of one complete archive for an uninterrupted 24-hour stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos—not a camera encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it can stream your uploaded video at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
