How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream with AWS Elemental MediaLive

A practical guide to building a continuous YouTube Live workflow with AWS Elemental MediaLive: source choices, RTMP push or pull, YouTube output, startup order, redundancy, archives, and cost planning.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a 24/7 YouTube stream with AWS Elemental MediaLive, you need more than a MediaLive channel: you need a source that continuously supplies video and audio, a MediaLive input and channel to process it, and an output configured with your YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Then you must start the source and channel in the right order, confirm YouTube receives the feed, and plan for failures, archiving, and recurring AWS charges.

Understand the three parts of the workflow

MediaLive ingests a feed, transcodes it according to your channel configuration, and sends its output downstream. It does not create or supply the program content. A continuous stream therefore depends on three connected parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Source: A camera or production system, a computer encoder such as OBS, or another live feed that can keep providing picture and sound.
  • MediaLive input and channel: The input connects the source to MediaLive; the channel processes the feed and defines its outputs.
  • YouTube output: The channel sends the processed video to YouTube using the ingest method and credentials configured for your live stream.

A failure in any part can interrupt the broadcast. MediaLive can process a live source continuously, but it does not make a source, home network, YouTube destination, or recording system reliable by itself. AWS describes the workflow and the independent pipelines of a standard channel in the AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide, “How MediaLive works.”

Prepare the source and choose how it connects

First decide what will provide the video and audio for the full broadcast. For a camera-based show, that could be a production system or a computer encoder receiving the camera feed. For a continuous playlist, it could be an upstream system that plays the material into MediaLive. The source must remain available for as long as the stream is meant to run.

OBS is not required just because you are using MediaLive. It is one possible upstream encoder or source, particularly when a computer is already producing the live feed. If you choose OBS, that computer and its network connection still need to remain active; MediaLive does not turn an intermittent feed into a continuous program.

RTMP push: the source connects to MediaLive

With an RTMP push input, the upstream source sends its feed to the input destinations that MediaLive creates. For a public RTMP push input, attach an input security group that allows the source’s public IP address or addresses. Allow only known egress IPs where practical. Use the destinations generated in your AWS account, not example IP addresses from documentation.

A standard-class input can have two destinations, and the source must send to both. A single-pipeline input uses one. AWS’s “Create an RTMP push input” guidance also says a push source must already be sending when you start the channel. Account for that in your startup sequence.

RTMP pull: MediaLive connects to the source

With RTMP pull, you configure the upstream source URL or URLs and any required credentials, and MediaLive connects to that endpoint. This can suit a source that is reachable from MediaLive and is designed to accept an incoming connection. The choice between push and pull depends on network reachability, firewall rules, credential handling, and which side should initiate the connection; push is not mandatory for every setup.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create a stream or load one you have already configured.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube provides these values in Live Control Room for the encoder to use.
  3. Store the key as a secret. It controls where the encoder sends the feed. Do not reveal it in screenshots, public configuration, source code, or logs that others can access. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the MediaLive output configuration.

YouTube’s Help article “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” documents using the stream URL and key in an encoder. Check YouTube’s current Live Control Room and account requirements before scheduling a broadcast; eligibility details can depend on the channel and are not established here.

Create a MediaLive input, channel, and output

  1. Create the input for your source. Choose RTMP push or RTMP pull based on the connection plan. For push, attach the input security group and use the generated destinations. For pull, enter the reachable source endpoint and the credentials it needs.
  2. Create a channel and attach the input. Configure the channel to process the input, then define the output group and output settings for the intended YouTube ingest workflow.
  3. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the output destination. Keep the key out of any configuration that is publicly accessible. Check that the destination and credentials correspond to the YouTube stream you intend to use.
  4. Set video and audio to match the source and current ingest requirements. Choose supported codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio configuration, and keyframe cadence. Confirm these against the current YouTube encoding guidance and AWS console options for the channel you are building.

There is no single bitrate or codec preset established here as a current general-purpose recommendation. An AWS Media Blog post dated 2021-04-14 includes 4K, 59.94 fps, and 20 Mbps as settings for its particular 4K/HDR HLS example; those are not universal YouTube settings or a current default to apply blindly.

RTMP(S) or HLS output?

The AWS Public Sector walkthrough “Live streaming to Facebook and YouTube with AWS Elemental MediaLive” demonstrates an RTMP(S) output to YouTube using a stream key. AWS’s 2021 HLS article documents a specialized HLS ingest path for 4K/HDR. These examples describe different workflows, not a rule that every YouTube stream must use HLS or that the older HLS settings apply to an ordinary stream. Choose an output supported for your intended YouTube ingest path, then verify the current AWS and YouTube protocol requirements before configuring it.

Choose a pipeline class and plan the full failure chain

A single-pipeline channel is simpler to plan and has less MediaLive pipeline redundancy. A standard channel has two independently operating pipelines that perform identical processing, adding resilience within MediaLive. For that resilience to help end to end, however, the upstream must provide two independent sources and the downstream must receive two outputs. A single source, network link, or destination setup can still be a point of failure.

Decide whether the extra MediaLive redundancy is appropriate for your availability needs, and confirm you can supply and receive the corresponding independent feeds. AWS recommends two-pipeline processing for MediaLive resiliency; a standard channel does not by itself make every component of the broadcast redundant.

Start the feed and verify YouTube receives it

  1. Check the whole path before starting: confirm the source is available, input networking and credentials are correct, and the channel output contains the intended YouTube URL and key.
  2. For RTMP push, start the source before starting the channel. The source needs to be pushing when MediaLive starts. For other input types, follow the startup order appropriate to that connection and output configuration; do not assume one order fits every workflow.
  3. Start the MediaLive channel and check its state. Confirm that it reaches Running and that the expected input and output are active.
  4. Check Live Control Room for an incoming preview. Confirm that YouTube is receiving picture and sound before beginning the public broadcast. Follow the controls shown for the stream in Live Control Room; the final live-control steps can vary by workflow.
  5. Monitor the source, connection, channel, and destination throughout the broadcast. Decide in advance who will respond to a source disconnect, rejected feed, credential problem, or maintenance interruption.

Plan for 24/7 continuity and video archives

Continuous availability and a complete recording are separate requirements. YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will produce a complete automatic archive. If you need a full VOD, arrange a separate recording or a planned segment-and-restart strategy, and preserve the source material independently.

For the live service, identify how you will detect a failed source or output, restore the feed, and restart any component that needs maintenance. A MediaLive channel alone does not guarantee the upstream content will continue, or that YouTube will accept every incoming feed without interruption.

Estimate the recurring AWS cost before going live

A 24/7 MediaLive workflow is a recurring cloud workload, not a one-time setup. AWS MediaLive pricing depends on the input and output characteristics, and standard-channel and single-pipeline charges differ. AWS also documents charges for every input attached to a running channel, even if an input is inactive or not receiving content; idle resources can incur charges too.

Estimate the configuration you will actually run with current AWS pricing information or the AWS pricing calculator. Include the AWS region, codec, resolution, frame rate, number and characteristics of inputs and outputs, channel class, and any applicable add-ons. Recalculate after changing the design. A historical figure from a tutorial is not a reliable current quote: the AWS Public Sector walkthrough’s $1.26/hour example was for a 1080p, multi-destination setup in selected US regions and was published around 2020.

Common problems and how to narrow them down

  • The channel will not start with an RTMP push input: The source may not yet be sending, or may be sending to the wrong destination. Start the source first, then verify it is pushing to the generated MediaLive destination or destinations.
  • MediaLive cannot receive a public push feed: Check that the input security group allows the source’s actual public egress IP address. Verify the source is using the account-generated endpoint, not an example address.
  • A standard-class push input is only partly supplied: Confirm that the upstream sends to both MediaLive destinations. A standard input expects both paths.
  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check the output URL and stream key, whether the intended channel output is active, and whether the selected ingest method matches the YouTube stream configuration. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
  • The preview appears but the broadcast is not public: Receiving an encoder feed and beginning the public broadcast are distinct steps. Review the stream’s Live Control Room state and use its available live controls.
  • Video or audio is rejected or looks wrong: Compare the source format and channel output settings with current YouTube ingest requirements. Check codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe cadence, and audio configuration rather than applying the 2021 4K/HDR example as a universal preset.
  • The stream stops after a source or network interruption: Restore the upstream feed and verify the channel and YouTube preview recover. Include source, network, and destination monitoring in your continuity plan; MediaLive pipeline redundancy does not remove these other failure points.
  • The AWS bill is higher than expected: Review running and idle resources, attached inputs, output configuration, region, and channel class in the current pricing estimate. An inactive input attached to a running channel can still be charged.
  • A long-running stream has no complete YouTube archive: A broadcast longer than 12 hours is outside the automatic-archive condition stated by YouTube. Use a separate recording or planned segmentation if a complete VOD is required.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded-video loop rather than a live camera or production feed, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to maintaining an upstream encoder and MediaLive workflow. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-live service. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
