A 24/7 YouTube live channel needs a video source and an encoder or streaming service that keeps sending the broadcast to YouTube. YouTube does not automatically turn an uploaded video into a nonstop live stream. You can run an encoder on an always-on computer, use dedicated hardware, or send prerecorded videos from a cloud service.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube currently requires streamers to be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A video source: a camera or production feed for live programming, or video files and a playlist for prerecorded programming.
- An encoder or cloud streaming service to send the video to YouTube.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Start the setup ahead of the time you intend to launch; see YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Choose how to keep the stream running
Software encoder on a computer
A software encoder gives you direct control over the outgoing feed and is a practical choice for a live camera or a playlist you manage locally. The computer, encoder, power, and internet connection must remain available for the broadcast to continue. A power cut, computer restart, software crash, or home-network outage can interrupt it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDedicated hardware encoder
A hardware encoder can suit a higher-production workflow or a setup built around cameras and other video equipment. It still depends on a working network and power supply, and it is not required just to stream: YouTube supports software encoders too. Check that any device supports YouTube’s ingest protocol and the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use. YouTube’s live-streaming tips explain encoder workflows.

Cloud service for prerecorded video
A cloud service can play uploaded videos or playlists without relying on a home computer to send the feed. Compare services by supported quality and protocol, playlist controls, recovery behavior, monitoring, archive handling, cost, and how they handle media rights. Do not treat a provider’s uptime or recovery claims as guarantees unless its current terms substantiate them.
Create the YouTube live stream and connect an encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Configure a new stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder guide covers creating a stream with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In the stream settings, copy the ingest server URL and key, then enter them in the matching fields in your encoder. Use the same stream key for the event you configured; if you change or reset it, update the encoder as well.
- Protect the key. YouTube says a stream key is like a password and address. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm that picture, audio, and timing are correct before starting the broadcast.
- Start the broadcast and verify the viewer experience. Start the stream in Live Control Room, then open the channel or watch page from another device. Check that the public feed is showing the intended content and audio.
Choose video, audio, and network settings
Pick a quality your connection can sustain
Set the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to match the source and the quality your upload connection can sustain. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for those specific settings, not universal bitrates for every codec or frame rate. For other combinations, use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table.
Use recommended ingest and encoding settings
- Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encryption.
- Video codecs: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for encoder streams. Confirm your encoder and planned workflow support the codec you select.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps.
Settings and supported combinations can change, so check the current YouTube encoder settings page when configuring a different codec or quality.
Leave upload headroom
Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the total bitrate being sent. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate; see YouTube’s streaming tips. Account for audio and any additional streams in the total, and test the actual connection from the location and network that will run the broadcast. If the feed drops frames or loses connection, reduce the target quality or bitrate before relying on the stream.

Test and monitor the 24/7 broadcast
- Play a representative section of the source, including the loudest audio and the most motion-heavy video, and check the Live Control Room preview.
- Listen from another device to confirm that audio is present, at a sensible level, and not distorted.
- Check the public watch page from a separate device or browser before promoting the stream.
- Review stream health in Live Control Room after launch. Arrange a way to notice if the feed stops, and decide who or what will restart the encoder or service.
- Periodically verify that a playlist advances as intended and that the stream is still showing the correct content.
YouTube’s advice is straightforward: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See its encoder settings guide.
Can you stream prerecorded videos 24/7?
Yes, a continuous broadcast can use prerecorded videos, but the encoder or service must keep sending the playlist as a live feed. An uploaded video by itself does not loop on YouTube as a live stream. Before streaming, confirm you have permission for every video, music track, image, and other asset, including the rights needed for continuous public playback.
Technical setup does not settle whether a particular channel or its prerecorded content qualifies for monetization. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance establishes technical and eligibility requirements, not a monetization outcome for every looping format. Do not assume that continuous streaming makes reused material eligible or guarantees views, recommendations, or revenue; review YouTube’s current policies for your content.
Plan for interruptions, recovery, and archives
A 24/7 stream needs an operational plan, not just a successful launch. With a local encoder, decide how to respond to power, internet, computer, or software failures. With a cloud service, check what its recovery process covers and how you will learn that the feed has stopped. YouTube’s guidance does not establish any third-party provider’s uptime or pricing.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise the archive result for a continuous event longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, keep the original source files and consider whether shorter events fit your programming and recording needs. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archiving guidance.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or the server URL or stream key is wrong. | Confirm the encoder is running and that its URL and key match the active YouTube stream. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder. |
| Stream disconnects or drops frames | The connection cannot reliably carry the selected bitrate, or the local network or encoder is interrupted. | Check stream health and upload capacity; YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. Reduce bitrate or quality if necessary, and check power, network stability, and encoder operation. |
| Viewers cannot hear audio | The source or encoder audio input is missing, muted, or configured incorrectly. | Check the encoder’s audio source and meter, then listen to the Live Control Room preview and public watch page from another device. |
| Video looks choppy or mismatched | The source, encoder frame rate, or network capacity may not align. | Match encoder settings to the source, review the current YouTube bitrate guidance for that codec and resolution, and test again before restoring the intended schedule. |
| Broadcast stops when nobody is at the computer | A local encoder needs the computer and its connection to remain available. | Prevent sleep or shutdown where appropriate and plan for power and connectivity interruptions, or use a cloud approach that does not depend on a home computer. |
