Organize files and playback order
Arrange the lessons in the intended sequence and decide what viewers should see between lessons and during any restart. Verify that your playback setup can move from one file to the next and loop the complete sequence. The YouTube encoder instructions do not verify any particular third-party player or automation tool for these tasks, so test your chosen setup rather than assuming it will loop or recover as needed.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream. Follow the encoder setup in YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Enter them in the encoder’s destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it, share it, or expose it in screenshots.
- Select RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Configure the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codecs, and keyframe frequency using the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Match output to the lesson source and connection. Do not choose a higher output quality than the source or available upload bandwidth can sustain. Test with actual lesson footage, including its audio and screen movement.
- Start a test feed and inspect Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and that the preview looks and sounds right before making the stream public.
YouTube’s guidance page provides the applicable encoder settings; the exact values depend on resolution, frame rate, and other settings. Use that page rather than guessing at a bitrate or keyframe value.

Test the stream before viewers depend on it
For an event-style encoder setup, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the planned start. For a 24/7 channel, use that preparation time to test the complete continuous-playback arrangement, not just the initial connection.
- Watch the incoming preview in Live Control Room and check the public watch page on desktop and mobile.
- Confirm the lesson order, file transitions, loop behavior, audio levels, and what viewers see while the encoder or playback system restarts.
- Check that a local recording is being created, opens correctly, and continues to grow in size.
- Simulate or otherwise test the recovery plan for a power interruption, network loss, and encoder restart.
- Monitor stream quality during the test and ensure the connection can sustain the configured output.

Plan archives and continuity separately
Do not count on one complete 24-hour YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If YouTube archives matter, plan and test shorter sessions rather than assuming a continuous day-long broadcast will produce a complete replay. Leave upload headroom and monitor the local copy
YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and says to include both primary and backup bitrate in the capacity calculation. A disrupted connection can break a live stream, so test recovery instead of assuming the broadcast will remain uninterrupted. Keep enough local storage for the recordings you intend to retain, and periodically check that the files are intact.
