Set the name when the Soulmask dedicated server starts by adding -SteamServerName="Your Name" to its launch command. For a persistent file-based setting, put SteamServerName=Your Name under [Dedicated.Settings] in the platform’s Engine.ini. Restart the server and confirm the new text in the Soulmask server browser.

If both a startup argument and Engine.ini contain a name, the startup argument takes priority. That precedence explains why editing the file alone sometimes appears to have no effect.

Choose the method that matches your server
The correct control surface depends on how your server is launched. Self-hosted Windows servers normally use a batch file, Linux servers commonly use Engine.ini, hosting panels expose a Server Name variable, and some container images use SERVER_NAME.

Set the name on a Windows self-hosted server
1. Stop the server
Shut down the dedicated server before changing its launcher. Editing while the process is running can leave you checking an old process or cause a later save to overwrite your change.

2. Open the launcher for editing
- Open the Soulmask Dedicated Server folder.
- Right-click
StartServer.bat. - Choose Edit to open the batch file in a text editor.
3. Add or change -SteamServerName
Find the existing launch line. Add the argument to that line, or replace the existing value if one is already present. Keep the name in double quotation marks when it contains spaces.
StartServer.bat -SteamServerName="My Soulmask Server" -MaxPlayers=20 -pve -Port=8777 -QueryPort=27015The name is the text between the quotation marks. You can replace My Soulmask Server with the label you want players to see. Leave unrelated options such as player count, game mode and ports unchanged unless you intend to modify them.

4. Save and restart
Save StartServer.bat, close the editor, and launch the server through that batch file. A restart is required because the server reads the startup arguments when it starts, not continuously while it is running.
Set the name in Engine.ini
The configuration-file method is useful when you want the name stored with the server’s settings rather than in a launch shortcut. The key is the same on both platforms; only the directory changes.
Linux path
- Stop the Soulmask server.
- Open
WS/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Engine.ini. - Find the
[Dedicated.Settings]section. - Add or edit the line
SteamServerName=My Soulmask Server. - Save the file and restart the server.

SteamServerName=My Soulmask ServerIf the section already contains other dedicated-server settings, add the name on its own line. Do not put the key under a different section, because the documented location for this setting is [Dedicated.Settings].

- Stop the server.
- Open
WSSavedConfigWindowsServerEngine.iniinside the dedicated-server installation. - Under
[Dedicated.Settings], add or editSteamServerName=My Soulmask Server. - Save the file and start the server again.

SteamServerName=My Soulmask ServerUse the WindowsServer directory for a Windows deployment and the LinuxServer directory for a Linux deployment. Editing the other platform’s file will not change the configuration read by your running server.
Change the name in a hosting control panel
Managed hosts generally expose the same setting without requiring direct access to a batch file or configuration directory.
- Open the server’s control panel.
- Go to Startup or the equivalent launch-settings page.
- Locate the variable labeled Server Name.
- Enter the desired name and save the settings.
- Restart the Soulmask server.
In these panels, the Server Name field normally maps to -SteamServerName. Because the panel generates the launch command, its value can override a name you entered in Engine.ini. If the old name remains, inspect the generated startup parameters rather than editing only the file.
Set the name in a Docker deployment
Container images do not all use the same configuration interface. The jsknnr Soulmask container documents SERVER_NAME as the environment variable for the server name. In that image, include the variable in the container definition:
--env=SERVER_NAME='My Soulmask Server'The variable can be supplied as part of the image’s documented docker run command or its equivalent compose configuration. A different Soulmask image may expose another variable or require a different syntax, so use the variable name specified by that image’s documentation rather than assuming every container supports SERVER_NAME.

Understand which value wins
Soulmask can receive a name from more than one place. The practical order to check is:
- Startup arguments: a value passed as
-SteamServerNameis applied when the server launches. - Generated panel arguments: a hosting panel may add its own startup value, even when an
Engine.inientry exists. - Engine.ini: the
[Dedicated.Settings]entry supplies the persistent file-based value when no higher-priority startup value replaces it.
If a startup command and Engine.ini define different names, the startup command wins. This is why a correctly edited file can appear ineffective: the process may never use its value.
Find duplicate startup arguments
On Windows, search StartServer.bat for every occurrence of -SteamServerName. A later value on the effective launch command can override an earlier one. Also check shortcuts, wrapper scripts and panel-generated startup fields if the batch file is not the component actually starting the server.
Verify the new name
Do not rely only on the text in the file. Verify the value that players actually receive.
- Stop the server completely.
- Make the change in the batch file,
Engine.ini, panel, or container definition. - Start the server using the normal production method.
- Open the Soulmask in-game or Steam server browser.
- Search for the server and compare the displayed name character by character with the value you entered.
The server browser is the practical confirmation that the running process accepted the setting. If the browser still shows the previous text, continue with the troubleshooting checks below instead of repeatedly editing the same file.

Troubleshoot an old name that keeps appearing
The server was not restarted
Changing a file or panel field does not rename an already running process. Stop the server, ensure it has exited, and start it again. Then refresh the server-browser listing.
A panel is injecting another value
Open the panel’s Startup page and inspect the Server Name field and generated arguments. A panel-provided -SteamServerName takes priority over the value in Engine.ini. Set the desired name in the panel, or remove the conflicting startup value if the panel allows that configuration.

Check the complete startup command, not just the first match in a script. Remove the stale duplicate or make the effective argument contain the intended name. This check is especially important when a wrapper script calls another batch file.
The wrong platform directory was edited
Confirm which operating system is running the dedicated server. Linux reads WS/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Engine.ini; Windows reads WSSavedConfigWindowsServerEngine.ini. A change in the unused directory cannot affect the active process.
The key is outside the correct section
Open the active Engine.ini and verify that the line is directly under [Dedicated.Settings]:
[Dedicated.Settings]
SteamServerName=My Soulmask ServerCheck spelling and punctuation as well. The setting name is SteamServerName; variants such as ServerName do not represent the documented key.

If the server runs in Docker, confirm the image documentation before changing files inside the container. SERVER_NAME is documented by some Soulmask images, but environment-variable names are an implementation detail of each image. Set the variable in the container definition and recreate or restart the container according to that image’s procedure.
Practical naming checklist
- Choose one authoritative method: startup argument,
Engine.ini, panel variable, or container environment. - Use
-SteamServerName="..."for a launch command andSteamServerName=...under[Dedicated.Settings]forEngine.ini. - Keep quotation marks around a command-line name containing spaces.
- Stop the server before editing its files.
- Look for duplicate or panel-generated startup arguments.
- Restart after every change.
- Confirm the result in the Soulmask server browser.
Which approach should you use?
Use the Windows batch-file method when you control a Windows installation and want the name visible alongside the other launch options. Use Engine.ini when configuration files are your normal administration workflow or when running Linux. Use the hosting panel’s Server Name field when the provider manages the launch command; it is the least error-prone place for that deployment, but it also has the power to override file settings. Use SERVER_NAME only when the particular container image documents that variable.
Regardless of deployment, the essential setting is the same: Soulmask’s dedicated-server name is supplied through -SteamServerName, directly or through a configuration layer that generates it. Restarting and checking the server browser confirms whether the effective launch configuration contains the name you intended.
