After a file or panel edit, restart or reload the instance using the host’s documented control and confirm the new text in the server browser.

What the two fields control
The labels in Keen Software House’s dedicated-server documentation describe two different pieces of listing information:

It is the short identifier players scan when choosing a world.
- Server Description is owner-written explanatory text for visitors. Use it to explain the play style, rules, schedule, or other information a player should know before joining.
Changing one does not automatically change the other. A clear name can identify the community or world, while the description supplies the context that does not fit in a short listing name.
Choose the editing method that matches your server
There are three common ways to change these values:

- Windows Dedicated Server tool: the supported graphical route for a local/console instance or a Windows service instance.
- Rented-host control panel: a web form that presents Server Name and Server Description without requiring direct file access.
- Direct XML editing: useful when you administer the files yourself or a provider documents the XML settings rather than exposing a form.
Use only one method at a time and identify the active instance first. A server can have more than one configuration file, so editing an inactive copy will not change the listing that players see.
Set the name and description in the Windows Dedicated Server tool
Local/Console instance
This is the shortest path when you run the dedicated server directly on Windows:

- Launch
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. - In the instance selector, choose Local/Console.
- Click Continue to server configuration.
- Open the Server settings area and stay in the General section.
- Find Server name. Enter the exact name you want players to see in the server list.
- Find Server Description. Enter the explanatory text visitors should read when they inspect the listing.
- Review both fields for spelling, spacing, and accidental line breaks.
- Click Save & start.
The save action writes the settings for that instance and starts the server with them. If the server was already running and the new text is not visible immediately, use the tool’s normal stop/start or reload workflow, then inspect the browser listing again.
Windows service instance
A service instance uses the same name and description fields, but you must first select or create the correct service:

- Run the Dedicated Server tool as an administrator. Administrative elevation is required for the Windows service workflow described in the official guidance.
- Choose Add new instance if this is a new service, or select the existing instance whose listing you want to change.
- If you create an instance, give the service a unique system-wide name. This service name identifies the Windows instance; it is separate from the player-facing Server name field.
- Select the intended instance and continue to server configuration.
- Open Server settings > General.
- Edit Server name and Server Description.
- Save the configuration and start the service with the tool’s controls.
Do not confuse the unique service name in the instance-creation step with the listing name. The former keeps Windows services distinct; the latter is what appears to players.
Change the values in a rented-host panel
Many game-server providers place the two settings in a web configuration area. The labels may use slightly different capitalization, but look for Server Name and Server Description. The practical sequence is:

- Open the configuration page for the specific Space Engineers instance, not a general account or template page.
- Locate the fields corresponding to the server name and description.
- Replace the existing values, then use the panel’s save, apply, or update control.
- Restart or reload the server through the panel’s documented control. Some panels save a file first and apply it only on the next restart.
- Open the public server browser and verify the listing after the instance is online.
Providers do not all expose the same advanced settings. If the panel has no visible fields, check its file manager or configuration documentation for the XML tags described below. Avoid editing a generated file while the panel is simultaneously applying changes; make one change, apply it, and then verify the result.
Edit SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg directly
The dedicated-server settings are stored in an XML configuration file named SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. The active file belongs to the instance that is actually running. On a machine with several instances, confirm the path from the instance’s service or host configuration before making an edit.

Safe XML editing procedure
- Stop the instance or use the provider’s maintenance control. This prevents the server from writing the old values back while you edit.
- Make a backup. Copy the active
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfgto a separate location and keep the original filename available for recovery. - Open the active file in a plain-text editor. Do not edit an unrelated template or a different instance’s file.
- Find the existing
ServerNameelement. Replace only the text between its opening and closing tags. - Find the existing
ServerDescriptionelement. Replace its inner text in the same way. - Preserve valid XML. Every opening tag must have the matching closing tag, with the same spelling and capitalization. Keep the surrounding configuration structure intact.
- Save the file. If your editor asks about a file format, retain a plain XML-compatible text format rather than converting the document to a word-processing format.
- Start or reload the instance using the server tool, service controls, or host panel documented for that installation.
- Check the browser listing. Confirm both the name and description, not just whether the server comes online.
Minimal XML shape
The relevant entries have this form:

<ServerDescription>Co-op survival, friendly PvE rules, weekly events.</ServerDescription>This example shows the field names and tag pairing only. Keep the other elements in your configuration file and retain whatever surrounding structure your instance already uses. A missing closing tag, a misspelled element, or an accidentally deleted section can prevent the intended value from loading.
Apply and verify the change
Saving a GUI form or XML file is not the final check. The running process and the public listing must both reflect the new values.
- Use the normal start, stop/start, or reload command for your installation. A rented host may call this Restart, Apply, or Reload; follow that panel’s documented behavior.
- Wait until the instance is reported online and visible to the server browser.
- Search for the exact new Server name.
- Open the listing details and read the complete Server Description.
- If the old text remains, return to the troubleshooting checks below before making another edit.
Checking the browser catches a common mistake: changing a file or panel entry successfully but applying it to a different instance than the one players use.
Troubleshoot an unchanged listing
The old name or description still appears
- Confirm that you edited the instance selected in the Dedicated Server tool or the same server identified by the hosting panel.
- Make sure you used the exact fields: Server name controls the listing name, while Server Description controls the explanatory text.
- Restart or reload the instance after a file or panel change. A saved value may not be read by the running process until the next load.
- Reopen the configuration after saving. If the old value has returned, the panel may have overwritten an inactive or malformed edit; use its documented save/apply process and inspect the active configuration again.
The server fails to load the intended value after XML editing
- Restore the backup if the server no longer starts normally.
- Compare the edited lines with the original structure and check that every opening tag has its matching closing tag.
- Check the case and spelling of
ServerNameandServerDescription. - Remove accidental text outside the element values and save a clean, valid XML document.
- Start the instance again and verify the listing before attempting further changes.
Malformed XML can prevent the intended value from loading. A backup gives you a known-good configuration while you correct the two entries.

The description looks different from what you typed
The authoritative documentation does not publish a definitive character limit, markup rule, or profanity-filter specification for these fields. Do not promise a particular maximum length or assume that formatting tags will render. Use straightforward text, then inspect the actual browser display. If a host panel documents its own validation, follow that provider-specific rule.

Self-hosting and rented hosting: which workflow fits?
Both approaches can expose the same two listing fields. The meaningful difference is who operates the machine and how you reach the configuration.

Self-hosting is supported by the Windows Dedicated Server tool; renting a server is optional, not a prerequisite for setting a name or description. Choose the method that gives you the access and restart control you are prepared to maintain.
Write listing text that helps visitors decide
Make the name scannable
Because the name is shown in the server list, put the identifying information first: a community name, world name, or concise play-style label. Avoid burying the identity in a long sentence. Use consistent capitalization so returning players can recognize it quickly.
Use the description for decisions
The description is the place for information that answers a visitor’s immediate questions. A useful compact description can state:

- Whether the server is cooperative, competitive, PvE, or another clearly defined style.
- Any central rule that affects joining or building.
- Whether scheduled events or a recurring play session are part of the server’s routine.
- Where a new player should look for the full rules, if you maintain them elsewhere.
Keep the wording readable in a server-browser preview. Since no authoritative character limit or markup behavior is published, favor plain sentences over elaborate formatting and test the result in the actual listing.
Separate permanent information from announcements
Use the description for information that remains accurate between restarts. If you regularly change an event date or temporary message, update the field deliberately and verify it in the browser so visitors do not see stale instructions.
Operational checklist
- Identify the exact instance that players join.
- Choose the Dedicated Server tool, host panel, or active XML file for that instance.
- Enter the listing text in Server name.
- Enter visitor guidance in Server Description.
- For XML, edit
ServerNameandServerDescriptionwithout disturbing surrounding tags. - Keep a backup before manual file editing.
- Save, restart or reload using the controls appropriate to the installation.
- Verify both values in the public server browser.
- If the value does not appear, check the instance path, exact field, restart state, and XML validity before trying another edit.
What is not documented
Keen Software House’s published guidance identifies the fields and their purpose but does not state a universal character limit, supported markup syntax, or profanity-filter specification. Those behaviors may vary by game version or hosting interface. Treat any limit or filtering message shown by a particular panel as provider-specific, and rely on the browser listing—not an assumed formatting rule—as the final presentation check.
