Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn a typical UEFI PC, firmware starts Windows Boot Manager; Windows Boot Manager reads the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store and loads the selected Windows boot entry. If you do not choose an entry before the menu timer expires, it starts the entry marked as the default.
How the Windows boot sequence works
- UEFI firmware starts a boot application. It uses firmware boot variables and boot order to choose which EFI application to run. In a typical Windows UEFI setup, that application is Windows Boot Manager at
EFIMicrosoftBootbootmgfw.efi. Microsoft documents the UEFI boot configuration. - Windows Boot Manager reads BCD. The Boot Configuration Data store holds boot options, including the Windows loader entries available to the menu. Each entry has an identifier and settings for the loader and Windows system root. Microsoft’s BCD overview describes the store and its options.
- Boot Manager selects an entry. It displays the configured choices when appropriate, then passes control to the loader for the selected entry. Microsoft describes Windows Boot Manager as the component that “starts the system, displays the boot menu to the user, and loads the selected operating system loader.” See Microsoft’s boot-options documentation.
- The loader starts the configured Windows installation. BCD settings such as
device, osdevice, pathandsystemrootconnect an entry to its loader and Windows directory. The menu label is just a friendly description; the underlying settings determine what the entry loads.
If the menu timer expires without a selection, Boot Manager starts the configured default entry. Microsoft documents the default-entry setting.

Firmware boot order is not the Windows menu default
These are two separate choices. UEFI firmware decides which firmware boot entry or application gets control first. After Windows Boot Manager starts, its BCD configuration governs which Windows loader entries appear, their display order, and which one is the default.

A PC can have firmware entries for Windows Boot Manager on different disks, and a Windows Boot Manager entry can itself offer multiple Windows installations. Moving a Windows Boot Manager entry up in firmware boot order does not, by itself, select a different Windows installation within the BCD menu.

Why a Windows installation may be missing
A Windows installation will appear in the menu only if Windows Boot Manager has a corresponding loader entry in BCD. Microsoft’s dual-boot guidance says the menu should list both installations after Windows is installed to another prepared disk or partition. If one is absent, the relevant repair may be to add its boot option—but first identify the correct Windows directory and system partition.
Identify the Windows volume before repairing
Drive letters in the recovery environment may differ from the letters you see after Windows starts. Microsoft recommends identifying volumes with DiskPart and list volume before using a command that names a Windows directory. Its dual-boot example uses bcdboot D:Windows; D: is an example, not a drive letter to assume on your PC. Read Microsoft’s dual-boot setup and repair guidance.
What BCDBoot does
BCDBoot copies boot-environment files from a Windows installation to the system partition and creates or updates BCD configuration. On UEFI systems, it can also create a firmware NVRAM entry. Options such as /p (preserve UEFI order) and /addlast (place a new firmware entry last) affect firmware-entry handling; their effect depends on the system’s boot mode and the command used. Microsoft’s BCDBoot reference explains the command and options.

BCDBoot is not a universal first step for every boot problem. A wrong Windows path or system partition can create a new problem. Microsoft documents running repair commands from an elevated prompt, Windows installation media or Windows PE. Installation media on a USB flash drive can provide access to recovery tools, but the drive itself does not choose which Windows installation boots; firmware and BCD settings do.

The default is the BCD entry Boot Manager starts when the menu timer runs out. For basic default or timeout changes, Microsoft points users to System Configuration. BCDEdit also supports changing the default with the /default option, but it requires administrative privileges and Microsoft warns that some boot-configuration changes can make a computer inoperable. Default-entry documentation and Microsoft’s boot-options guide explain these settings.
What to check when the wrong Windows starts
- If you see a Windows boot menu, check which entry is marked as the default and how long the menu waits before choosing it.
- If no Windows menu appears, check whether firmware is starting the expected Windows Boot Manager entry; firmware boot order and the BCD menu are separate.
- If the installation you want is absent, identify its Windows directory and the system partition before attempting a BCD repair.
- Avoid guessing a universal firmware-menu key or drive letter: the available menus, key sequences and recovery drive letters vary by device and configuration.
These details describe the UEFI startup path. BCD is also used on BIOS-based systems, but legacy BIOS firmware does not use the same UEFI firmware handoff described above. Exact screens and behavior can vary with the PC maker and boot configuration.
