A crypto price alert sends you a notification; it does not sell your asset. A stop-loss is an order instruction that can trigger an exit, but it cannot guarantee a particular sale price—or, with a stop-limit order, a fill at all. Choose the trading pair and product you use, decide whether you need a notification or an order, and check the trigger and execution settings before you submit anything.
Price alert or stop-loss: choose the control you need
Use a price alert when you want to know that a market has reached a level so you can decide what to do. Coinbase Help says its alerts “do not place an order for that asset.” An alert therefore depends on notification delivery and does not protect a position automatically. Coinbase Help: Price alerts

Use a stop-loss order when you want an exchange to submit an exit order after a specified trigger condition. The result depends on the order type and market conditions; a trigger is not a guaranteed sale. Exchange order types and availability differ by product and region, so check the controls in the account and market you actually use.

The exact steps depend on the exchange, interface, and whether you trade spot, margin, or derivatives. Before placing an order, identify the market and check these settings in the order form:

Stop-market versus stop-limit
| Order type | What happens at the trigger | Main tradeoff | Check before placing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | A market order is submitted after the stop condition is met. | It prioritizes submitting an order for execution, but the execution price can vary with market conditions. | Confirm the trigger reference, quantity, and any position-linkage setting. |
| Stop-limit | A limit order is submitted after the stop condition is met. | The limit sets a price boundary, but the order may remain unfilled if the market moves beyond that price or does not reach it. | Confirm both the trigger and limit prices; understand that triggering does not ensure a fill. |
Kraken Support explains that “In a Stop Loss Limit order a Limit Order will trigger when the stop price is reached.” Binance also warns that the limit order may never fill if the market cannot reach the chosen limit price. Neither a stop-market nor a stop-limit guarantees a particular sale price or caps your loss at a predetermined amount. Kraken Support: Stop loss limit orders Binance Support: Stop-limit orders
Check the order and notification after setup
- For an alert, confirm it appears in the exchange’s alert list and that app, browser, and device notifications are enabled as applicable.
- For an order, review the market, trigger, quantity, order type, and limit price (if applicable) in the confirmation or open-orders view.
- After selling or closing a position another way, inspect open orders. A separate stop may remain active unless the exchange links it to the position or you cancel it.
- Recheck the exchange’s current interface and availability: product features, labels, and regional access can differ and change.
Coinbase also has a stop-order help page that uses Coinbase Pro branding. Treat its interface steps as legacy unless they match the current Coinbase product you use. Coinbase Help: Order types
