1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a long stock position, a common protective exit is a sell stop below the market, while a planned profit-taking order is usually a sell limit above it. A stop triggers an order; it does not guarantee that sale price. A target limit controls the minimum sale price but may not execute. The right levels depend on your trade plan, not a universal percentage or formula.
What a stop-loss and target order do
A stop-loss is an instruction intended to exit a position after the stock reaches a specified trigger price. A profit target is an instruction to exit at a price you have selected. These orders work differently: a stop determines when an order is activated, while a limit sets a price condition for execution.

For a long position—shares you own—a sell stop is commonly placed below the current market price, and a sell limit target above it. For a short position—shares you have sold and may need to buy back—the directions reverse: a buy stop is typically above market as a protective exit, and a buy limit target below market.

Set a stop based on the trade plan
Decide what price movement would invalidate the reason for taking the trade. That point can inform a stop level, but it is a strategic decision rather than a broker-prescribed setting. SEC and FINRA order guidance does not establish one universally correct stop distance, chart level, or risk/reward ratio.

Set a target based on the planned trade
Choose the price at which you intend to take profit. A sell limit order for a long position will execute only at its limit price or higher, if the market reaches it and a fill is available. A limit target is not a promise that the trade will close.
Understand the order choices
| Order | What happens | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | When the stop trigger is reached, the order becomes a market order. | Prioritizes execution after the trigger, but the fill can be at a different price. The SEC says, “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” (SEC Investor Bulletin, updated August 18, 2026.) |
| Stop-limit | When the stop trigger is reached, the order becomes a limit order. | Sets a price constraint, but the order may not fill if the market moves past the limit, leaving the position open. |
| Target limit | A sell limit for a long position can fill at the limit or higher; a buy limit for a short can fill at the limit or lower. | Controls the price threshold, but does not guarantee execution. |
A stop-market and stop-limit order therefore address different risks. A stop-market may execute at a worse-than-expected price; a stop-limit may fail to execute at all. Choose only after understanding which outcome matters more for your trade.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
Estimate planned price risk and size the order
For a long trade, multiply the per-share distance from entry to stop by the number of shares to estimate the loss if the stop executes at its trigger:
Estimated price risk = (entry price − stop price) × share quantity
For example, if you buy 100 shares at $50 and place a sell stop at $47, the simple estimate is ($50 − $47) × 100, or $300. This is an arithmetic estimate, not a guaranteed maximum loss: a stop-market can execute below the trigger, and a stop-limit can remain unfilled. For a short position, calculate the adverse per-share move in the opposite direction.
Enter and verify the orders with your broker
- Confirm the position: identify the stock symbol, whether the position is long or short, and the number of shares you intend the exit orders to cover.
- Select the order side and type: for a long, use a sell stop or sell stop-limit for protection and a sell limit for the target; reverse the sides for a short position.
- Enter the relevant prices: a stop order uses a trigger price; a stop-limit also requires a limit price. A target limit uses its limit price. Check that each value is in the intended field.
- Review time-in-force and trigger rules: check how long the order remains active and whether the broker triggers stops using last-sale prices, quotes, or another stated standard.
- Review and submit: confirm symbol, side, quantity, order type, prices, and any session restrictions before sending the order.
- Check order status: make sure the broker accepted the order and shows it as active. After fills, edits, or changes in position size, check the remaining quantity and status again.
Order names, availability, trigger standards, and time-in-force options vary by firm. The SEC notes that “Stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop orders may not be available through all brokerage firms.” Check your broker’s current order documentation and the submitted order details rather than assuming every platform works the same way.

Check linked exits and partial fills broker by broker
Some platforms offer linked exits such as OCO (one-cancels-the-other) or bracket orders. Do not assume that submitting a target and stop separately links them, or that one will automatically cancel or resize the other. Before using a linked feature, verify with your broker how cancellation, partial fills, position changes, and trading outside regular hours are handled.
