Set Screenshotlayer’s format request parameter to png to request PNG output. PNG is also the documented default, so you can omit the parameter for PNG. Screenshotlayer lists JPEG as supported, but its FAQ does not establish whether the exact value is jpg or jpeg; confirm that token in the current API documentation before using it.
Set the Screenshotlayer format parameter
Screenshotlayer’s capture request uses the /api/capture endpoint with an access_key and a target url. Add format=png to request PNG explicitly:

Replace the access key and target URL with your own values. Keep the key private; do not publish it in client-side code or a public repository. Screenshotlayer’s official FAQ identifies PNG as the default and lists PNG, JPEG, and GIF as supported formats.

Request JPEG without guessing the parameter value
The official FAQ confirms JPEG output is available through format, but the available FAQ text does not specify the literal enum spelling. It may be jpg or jpeg; do not assume either value. Check Screenshotlayer’s current interactive API documentation or ask its support team, then substitute the confirmed value in the same request shape, for example format=CONFIRMED_VALUE. The placeholder is explanatory and is not a value to send.

In general, PNG is a lossless image format and supports transparency; JPEG is generally used for photographic images where smaller files may be useful, but it is lossy and does not support transparency. These are general format characteristics, not a documented comparison of Screenshotlayer’s output quality or file sizes.
Troubleshooting format requests
- The result is PNG even though you expected JPEG: confirm that the request includes the exact documented JPEG token. The FAQ does not settle whether that token is
jpgorjpeg. - The request fails after adding the target URL: send query parameters through a URL encoder such as
--data-urlencodeorURLSearchParams; raw characters such as&can otherwise be interpreted as query separators. - The access key is rejected: check that the key is valid and that you have not copied extra spaces. Keep it confidential rather than embedding it in a public page.
- The saved file does not open: check the HTTP status and response before saving the body as an image. An error response should not be treated as a valid screenshot just because it was written to a file.
