How to Set Safe AI Rules for Children at Home or School

A child-friendly AI agreement can set clear limits on approved tools, privacy, schoolwork, adult support, and when to stop and tell someone.

Set a few clear rules with your child: use only tools approved by a parent, caregiver, or school; keep personal information private; follow the teacher’s directions for schoolwork; check important answers; and stop and tell an adult if an interaction feels unsafe. The right rules depend on the child’s age and readiness, the tool’s terms, and local school policy—there is no single age that makes every AI tool safe.

Start with a short agreement your child understands

Write the rules together and explain what to do when something goes wrong. This starter agreement can be adapted to the child, the tool, and the setting; it is not a universal service or school policy.

  • I use AI tools my parent, caregiver, or school has approved.
  • I do not share my full name, address, school details, passwords, private images, health information, or another person’s private information.
  • I follow my teacher’s directions about AI for an assignment and say when I used it if asked.
  • I check important answers with a trusted source or adult because AI can be wrong.
  • AI is not my therapist, doctor, or emergency helper. I talk to a trusted adult about serious feelings or problems.
  • If a tool makes me uncomfortable, asks me to keep a secret, requests personal information, or gives unsafe advice, I stop and tell an adult.

This approach reflects UNICEF’s child-rights guidance, which includes protecting children’s data and privacy, and UNESCO’s emphasis on age-appropriate, human-centered use in education. UNICEF guidance · UNESCO guidance

Choose tools and uses that fit the child

Do not treat one age as a universal safe-use threshold. Check the service’s own age terms, your child’s ability to use it safely, and the rules of the school or district. UNESCO recommends age-appropriate validation and limits on independent conversations with generative AI; that is guidance, not a global legal age limit. UNESCO’s education guidance

Common Sense Media’s age-and-stage guidance recommends against AI chatbots for younger children and supports supervised use by teens for homework and creativity. It also advises against AI emotional support for anyone under 18. These are recommendations from a guidance organization, not universal law; apply them alongside local policy and the specific tool’s terms. Common Sense Media: age and stage guidance

When a child is new to a tool or not ready to use it independently, an adult can explore it with them, agree on the purpose, and discuss what to do if it gives a confusing or disturbing answer. Common Sense Media also recommends adult involvement for children interested in ChatGPT and checking school rules. Common Sense Media: should children use ChatGPT?

Make privacy a simple, consistent default

Teach children not to enter details that identify them, expose their accounts, or reveal something private about themselves or another person. That includes names, addresses, school information, passwords, private images, and health details. Do not assume that a tool is private just because it is used for schoolwork.

For any tool an adult is considering, review what information it collects, why it needs it, how it is used or retained, who can see it, and whether the family or school can manage or delete it. Keep AI use connected to learning

For an assignment, the teacher’s directions determine whether AI help is allowed and what kind of help is acceptable. Ask whether the student may use it to brainstorm, get an explanation, revise, or complete another part of the work, and whether the use must be disclosed. If the directions are unclear, check with the teacher before using AI.

Encourage children to treat an AI answer as something to examine, not an authority. They can compare important claims with a trusted source, ask an adult for help, and explain the idea in their own words. UNESCO’s education guidance emphasizes human-centered, age-appropriate pedagogy rather than treating AI output as a substitute for learning. UNESCO guidance

Keep emotional and safety support with people

Set a clear boundary: an AI chatbot is not the person a child should rely on for serious distress, medical advice, or an emergency. Common Sense Media advises against AI emotional support for people under 18. Make sure a child knows which trusted adult to contact, and that they can stop an interaction without getting in trouble if it feels upsetting or unsafe. Common Sense Media: age and stage guidance

Adapt the agreement at home and at school

At home

A parent or caregiver can decide whether a child may use a tool, provide closer support when the child is new to it, and review its age terms and privacy settings. Talk about errors and uncomfortable interactions as situations to report, not reasons to hide what happened. At school

Students should follow district and teacher rules. Schools should decide which services are appropriate, explain what student data are collected and why, and tell students what kinds of AI assistance are allowed and how to disclose it. The FTC recommends that schools or districts—not individual teachers acting alone—make the decision about whether an education technology service’s practices are appropriate. FTC: COPPA frequently asked questions

A 2026 Common Sense Media survey of more than 1,000 U.S. children ages 9–17 found that three-quarters said their school had discussed what they could and could not use AI for; just over half said they had been taught how to use AI safely; and nearly half had never discussed AI safety with their parents. These are findings from that organization’s survey, not population-wide estimates for all children. Common Sense Media survey report

Know what U.S. COPPA guidance does—and does not—mean

In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) generally applies to online services directed to children under 13, or services with actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information from a child under 13. Covered services generally must give notice and obtain verifiable parental consent, subject to exceptions. This is a U.S.-specific legal summary, not individual legal advice, and it does not cover every student privacy law or other country’s rules. FTC: COPPA frequently asked questions

For a limited educational use, a school may consent on a parent’s behalf when a covered service collects children’s information for the school’s benefit and not for a separate commercial purpose. The FTC says schools or districts should assess whether a service’s data practices are appropriate for that use. The FTC also states: “Kids shouldn’t have to give up their privacy rights to do their schoolwork or go to class remotely.” FTC: COPPA frequently asked questions · FTC guidance on ed tech and children’s privacy

Review the rules as tools and school policies change

Revisit the agreement when a child starts using a new tool, takes on a new kind of schoolwork, or becomes ready for more independence. Before approving a service, consider its age and developmental fit, privacy practices and controls, educational purpose, response to harmful content or personal-data requests, and whether the child can tell they are interacting with AI and understand that its answers may be wrong. Check current terms and local school rules rather than assuming an earlier decision still applies.
