For predictable invoices, receipts, and catalogs, use @media print to create a document-focused layout and @page to specify preferred page dimensions, orientation, and margins. Then generate and inspect PDFs with the exact browser or renderer—and version—you intend to use: CSS declarations do not guarantee identical output across print pipelines.
How do I make a webpage print correctly?
Give the printed document its own presentation. A print stylesheet can hide screen-only interface elements while preserving the information a customer needs on paper or in a PDF.
Separate the screen and print layouts
Put print-specific rules in a @media print block, or link a dedicated stylesheet with media="print". Hide navigation, buttons, promotional elements, and other controls that do not belong in the document. Keep essential labels, line items, totals, and meaningful links.

How do I create a PDF from HTML and CSS?
Choose the paper format and orientation for the real audience and workflow, then declare them as page preferences with @page. Its size property describes the preferred page-box dimensions and orientation; it does not prove that every browser or print interface will produce the same result. The sheet or PDF pipeline may handle the preferred format differently.

Set page size and margins

}Replace these example values with the format and usable content area your document requires. Leave room for text, tables, and any page furniture such as a header or footer. The W3C’s CSS Paged Media Module Level 3 defines page size and orientation as a preferred output format and describes page-margin boxes.
Account for headers and footers
Page-margin boxes can generate items such as a document title or page number where the renderer supports them. For example, a supported top-right margin box can show a page counter:

}Support for this kind of page-margin content varies. Chrome for Developers documents CSS-generated margin content beginning with Chrome 131; Rachel Andrew’s article was published on 2024-10-30. The article also notes that browser-generated print headers and footers can still appear when space is available. Disable those in the print dialog or renderer settings if you provide your own, and reserve margin space consistently. See Chrome’s guide to adding content to printed page margins.
How do I stop invoice tables from splitting or getting cut off in a PDF?
Design for the page box rather than assuming screen widths will fit. Commerce documents may contain long product names, SKUs, addresses, tax details, and totals; those values need room to wrap without pushing content past the printable area.

- Set column widths and wrapping behavior with the selected paper size in mind.
- Inspect whether long values wrap legibly or extend beyond the page box.
- Check where line-item rows split and whether totals stay visually associated with their labels.
- Review the first page and later pages: content is fragmented across pages, and material outside the page box may be clipped or handled differently by user agents.
There is no universal table-break recipe established for every browser and PDF renderer. CSS paged-media behavior and document structure interact, so test the actual invoice or catalog templates you plan to publish. The W3C CSS 2.2 paged-media reference describes page boxes and page breaks.

Treat the renderer as part of the document specification. Record the browser or PDF renderer and its version, page-size choice, margins, and whether renderer-provided headers or footers are enabled. MDN cautions that browsers do not implement every part of the latest @page syntax, while Chrome documents a version-specific margin-content milestone. See MDN’s @page reference.

- Fix the output pipeline. Choose the browser or renderer and version that will create the PDFs; do not assume another pipeline will match it.
- Set the page contract. Specify the intended dimensions, orientation, and margins, then confirm the output respects them.
- Generate representative documents. Include a short document and a multi-page one, with long item names, many rows, and totals near a page boundary.
- Inspect every relevant page. Check page breaks, wrapping, clipping, headers and footers, and the placement of logos, fonts, and colors.
- Retest after changes. A renderer, version, stylesheet, or print-setting change can alter the PDF; validate the pipeline you will actually use.
Browser implementations differ, and the available references do not establish a product-by-product benchmark. Choose a renderer based on tests against your own documents rather than assuming one is universally best.
