Use the controls built for the child’s phone: Apple Screen Time for an iPhone, Android’s on-device parental controls or Google Family Link for an Android phone, and Microsoft Family Safety for an enrolled Android phone. Start with the child’s own account and family setup, then choose daily limits, app limits, downtime, or content restrictions to match your household’s rules. Menu names and availability vary by device, software version, account age, and region, so check the phone’s operating system before following the steps.
Choose the controls that match the phone

Family Link can run on a parent’s iPhone, but Google says it cannot supervise a child’s iPhone or iPad. For an iPhone, use Apple’s controls instead. Google’s Family Link requirements and setup explain supported devices and eligibility.

Before setting a limit, check the child’s account
Controls depend on the account being used, not only on the phone. Create or confirm the child’s age-appropriate account and add the device to the family group before configuring limits:

Apple notes that an incorrect birth date on the child’s Apple Account can prevent some age-based safeguards from being enabled. If the child uses someone else’s account, they may not receive the same safeguards. See Apple’s Child Safety guidance.
- Android with Family Link: The child needs a Google Account and a supported supervised device. Google lists a parent Google Account, an eligible adult age under local rules, supported parent and child devices, and residence in the same country among the requirements. Availability and requirements can change; consult Google’s current Family Link page.
- Microsoft Family Safety: The child’s Android phone must be connected to the Microsoft family group, and the child must sign in to Family Safety with their Microsoft account. Follow Microsoft’s device-connection instructions.
Set parental controls on an iPhone
- Set up Family Sharing and the child’s Apple Account if they are not already in your family group.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Family > [child’s name] to find the child’s parental controls and Screen Time settings.
- Configure Screen Time options that suit your rules, such as app or time allowances and restrictions. Use app limits for specific apps and scheduled downtime when you want a predictable break or bedtime boundary.
- Create a Screen Time passcode the child does not know. Apple recommends this to make it harder to change the settings.
If an expected age-based option is missing, check the birth date on the child’s Apple Account and confirm that the iPhone is using the child’s account. See Apple’s child-safety information for its account and Screen Time guidance.

Set screen-time limits on Android
Use Google Family Link for parent-managed limits
- Open Family Link on the parent’s device and select the child.
- Tap Screen time > Time limits.
- Turn on Daily limit, then open Weekly schedule.
- Select a day and enter the allowed time. Repeat for other days, or apply the schedule to them if that option is available.
- Return to the child’s Screen time settings to review app limits or grant bonus time when appropriate.
Google states: “Daily limits apply to each Android device or Chromebook your child uses.” That means a two-hour allowance on a phone and a Chromebook can permit two hours on each, rather than one shared two-hour budget. Set limits on every device the child uses if you want to manage their time across devices. Google’s Family Link help describes the limits and device requirements.
Use controls on the Android phone itself
Supported Android phones may offer controls for a daily total, scheduled downtime, individual app limits or blocks, and web content filtering. Search the phone’s Settings for Parental controls. If the menu is absent or the labels differ, check the manufacturer’s current instructions; Android menus and features vary by device and software version. Some controls can be secured with a PIN. Microsoft Family Safety’s phone screen-time controls apply to Android. To configure them:

- Install Family Safety on the child’s phone, sign in with the child’s Microsoft account, and follow the prompts to enable requested permissions.
- In the parent app or at family.microsoft.com, select the child and choose Mobile.
- Set the schedule and time limit for the connected phone.
Microsoft also supports screen-time management for connected Windows and Xbox devices, but its mobile phone limits are for Android. Schedules can be set per connected device. See Microsoft’s screen-time instructions.

Choose a limit that addresses the real issue
A daily total is only one kind of control. Choose the setting that corresponds to what you want to change:
- Too much overall use: Set a daily allowance.
- Late-night use: Schedule downtime or a bedtime boundary.
- One distracting app: Set an app-specific limit or block where supported.
- Age-inappropriate content: Review content restrictions as well as the apps, browsers, accounts, and devices the child actually uses.
There is no single daily allowance established here as right for every child. Set a family rule that fits your child and routine, and review it together rather than treating the timer as a complete safety measure.

Know what parental controls do not cover
Controls are not universal across every account, browser, app, and device. In particular, Google Play content restrictions do not prevent restricted results from appearing in search or being reached through a direct link. A Play restriction should not be treated as a complete web filter. Review the child’s actual apps, browsers, devices, and signed-in accounts. Google’s parental-controls guidance describes this limitation.
