| Platform | Where to set controls | What happens when time runs out | How the limit applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 | Console, web, or PlayStation Family app | Notify the child or log them out | Child family account; restrictions apply across PS4 and PS5 |

| Xbox | Microsoft Family Safety app or web account | The cited Microsoft guidance documents time and allowed-hour limits but does not specify an equivalent enforcement toggle | Selected apps and games for the chosen family member |

Set limits on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4
Playtime controls are managed for a child family member. The adult making changes must be the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian. If the child does not already have a child account in the family, create or add one before configuring limits. See PlayStation’s play-time controls guidance and its family and parental controls guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
On PS5
- Sign in with the adult family-manager or parent/guardian account.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, set the time zone, and open Playtime Settings.
- Choose whether to restrict playtime, set the daily duration and playable hours, and select what happens at the limit: a notification or logout.
- Save the settings. Set different allowances or hours for individual days if needed.
On PS4
- Sign in with the adult family-manager or parent/guardian account.
- Open Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management.
- Select the child, set the time zone, and choose Playtime Settings.
- Set the daily duration, playable hours, and whether the console should notify the child or log them out when time expires; save the changes.
The child can request more time, and the adult can respond to that request. Because playtime settings apply to the child account across PS4 and PS5, they cover play on either console. If a setting is changed while the child is in a game, PlayStation advises having them sign out and back in so the change takes effect.

- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Set limits on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Some restrictions can be configured on the console, but play-time limits and gameplay history require the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app. Nintendo says the app supports both Switch and Switch 2. Start with HOME > System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings for console-based age presets or custom restrictions; see Nintendo’s parental-control setup guidance.
Configure play time in the app
- Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and select Parental Controls.
- Set a Play-Time Limit. You can use different limits on different days; the daily cap ranges from no limit to six hours.
- Optionally set a Bedtime schedule.
- Choose whether to enable Suspend Play When Time’s Up. When enabled, the software stops at the limit; when disabled, the console displays a notification and play can continue.
- Allow the console to connect online so the settings activate.
If you set both a daily play-time limit and bedtime, the earlier one applies. The limit is set for the console and applies equally to all users on it, rather than providing separate allowances for each system user. Nintendo explains app features and play-time settings in its parental controls overview.

Check communication and purchases too
Nintendo’s age-based or custom restrictions can also address communication, user-generated content, social posting, and eShop purchases. Some purchase restrictions are managed in Nintendo Account settings, not only through the console or app. On Switch 2, GameChat has additional rules: a parent or guardian must be involved for players under 16 and supervised users, and players under 16 can use GameChat only with parent-approved friends. GameChat availability and requirements vary by country; consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 parental controls information for local details.
Set Xbox limits with Microsoft Family Safety
Microsoft’s documented setup uses the Family Safety app or the family account on the web, rather than a console-local menu path. Add or select the child as a family member, then use Microsoft’s screen-time instructions.

- SUPPORTS SCREEN TIME BOUNDARIES THAT HOLD Whether you’re setting screen-time rules for the first time or replacing app-based controls that no longer work, Egis Control delivers a physical solution. Power cords are locked inside a tamper-resistant case – no passwords to guess, no settings to reset. When time's up, a warning alert helps kids transition before power shuts off.
- BUILT TO PREVENT APP WORKAROUNDS – Downloading the Egis Control app on another phone doesn't give a child control of the plug. Device management, schedules, time limits, and overrides remain protected by the registered parent account.
- WORKS WITH XBOX, PLAYSTATION, PC & TV – Supports PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, gaming PCs, smart TVs, and VR headsets. Controls power at the wall outlet for any device that plugs into it.
- CORDS OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND – Connected plug heads and portions of attached cords stay physically secured inside the locking enclosure until unlocked via the app or backup key. Schedules stay on track without workarounds.
- SET IT TOGETHER, FORGET IT TOGETHER – Create daily schedules and time limits with your family. Both connected devices follow the same schedule and time limits. Devices shut off automatically with a warning alert — no reminders needed, no last-minute negotiations.
- In the Microsoft Family Safety app, select the family member.
- Choose the Windows/Xbox/Mobile platform.
- Select Set time limits > Apps, features, and games.
- Turn on app and game limits, select the game, and set the daily time allowance and the hours when it can be used.
- Choose a repeated schedule or customize the limits by day.
The web route uses the family account’s Apps, features, and games tab. Microsoft’s cited instructions cover time limits for selected apps and games on Xbox through Family Safety, but do not document a corresponding Xbox console settings menu or an enforcement choice such as automatic logout.

A time schedule does not replace controls over what a child can access or do online. Review the platform’s age and content settings, communication permissions, privacy options, user-generated content restrictions, and purchase or spending controls. On PlayStation, these settings are tied to the child’s account, so a change on one device affects other devices using that account. PlayStation also offers allowed-game exceptions and browser controls; Nintendo provides purchase restrictions through Nintendo Account settings as well as other parental-control options.
