How to Set OBS Bitrate for a 24/7 Relaxation Stream on a Slow Indian Connection

A practical OBS starting point for a 24/7 YouTube relaxation stream: 360p30, H.264, CBR and repeated upload tests before increasing quality.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with OBS at 640×360, 30 fps, H.264 and CBR, then test a conservative bitrate against your actual upload connection before committing to a 24/7 YouTube stream. YouTube lists 0.4 Mbps as the H.264 minimum and 4 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 360p30; the minimum is a published floor, not a promise of acceptable picture quality. There is no bitrate that is right for every Indian connection, so choose the highest setting that remains stable in repeated tests at the place and time you plan to stream.

Choose a starting bitrate based on your upload, not your download

Measure sustained upload capacity where the streaming computer will run. Repeat the measurement, including around the time the stream is expected to be live. A speed test is useful evidence, but a single result does not guarantee that the connection will hold a continuous stream. YouTube advises checking upload speed and testing before going live; its published settings give a useful reference, not a connection-specific prescription. India has many different cities, ISPs and access types, so advertised plan speeds or a national figure cannot substitute for your own test.

For H.264 at the listed frame rates, YouTube Help’s encoder table (accessed in 2026; no publication date shown) gives these values:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s platform figures, not a guarantee that a connection at the minimum will look good or remain stable. If your upload cannot reliably support the recommended figure, test below it rather than assuming the minimum will produce a satisfactory image. For a quiet, mostly static relaxation scene, 30 fps is a sensible low-bandwidth starting point; any quality trade-off should be judged from your own test, since the cited guidance does not quantify how much a static scene saves.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Set up OBS and YouTube for a test stream

  1. Measure upload capacity. Run several upload speed tests on the computer and connection you will use. Repeat at the expected streaming time. Do not use download speed as a proxy for upload.
  2. Set the OBS video output. Open Settings → Video and set the output resolution to 640×360 and the frame rate to 30 fps. In Settings → Output → Streaming, choose an H.264 encoder and set rate control to CBR if that control is exposed by the selected encoder. Set the video bitrate conservatively, leaving capacity for audio and normal network variation.
  3. Set the connection and keyframe values. In YouTube’s stream settings, use RTMPS if available. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the OBS encoder settings to these platform requirements.
  4. Use the correct stream key. Copy the key for the intended YouTube stream into OBS’s stream configuration. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to that stream. Do not share it publicly.
  5. Run a representative private or unlisted test. Use the same audio, scene, animation and transitions you intend to broadcast. Even a mostly still scene may have moving elements or changing sound. Watch YouTube’s stream-health panel and messages during the test.
  6. Adjust one setting at a time. If the test is unstable, lower bitrate first; if needed, lower resolution. Repeat the test and check stream health. Raise quality only after the lower setting has remained stable in repeated trials.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to and through its servers. Its H.264 guidance also specifies CBR. The applicable YouTube settings are documented at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Move up in quality only when the connection proves it can hold

Start with 360p30

Try 360p30 first. YouTube lists 4 Mbps as recommended, but a lower test value can be appropriate when upload capacity is constrained. Its listed 0.4 Mbps minimum is not an assurance that the result will be clear enough for your content. Compare the picture and audio in the actual test and watch for dropped frames or YouTube health warnings.

  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Test 480p30, then 720p30

If 360p30 remains stable, test 480p30 next. YouTube lists the same H.264 minimum and recommended bitrate for 480p30 as for 360p30. Try 720p30 only if your measured upload has enough spare capacity to sustain its 8 Mbps recommended bitrate; the listed minimum is 3 Mbps, but that too is only a floor. Do not jump to 1080p30 on a constrained connection: YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation is 14 Mbps, with a 5 Mbps minimum.

For a 24/7 stream, a short successful test is not enough to establish continuity. Run a longer trial under realistic conditions and check whether the computer stays powered, avoids overheating and reconnects as expected. The YouTube encoder guidance does not prescribe a special 24/7 bitrate or guarantee continuous operation.

Troubleshoot unstable streaming

  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops frames: Lower the video bitrate and retest. If that is not enough, lower output resolution. Confirm your actual upload speed at the time of the problem and leave capacity for audio and connection variation.
  • Speed tests look adequate, but OBS still disconnects: The network path or streaming server may be the issue, not only the bitrate. OBS Project advises trying a different server and contacting your ISP if problems persist. Follow its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance.
  • The stream is stable but the image is too soft: Increase bitrate only if repeated tests show headroom. Alternatively, keep the lower resolution that the connection sustains; a higher resolution at an insufficient bitrate may not improve the result.
  • Audio breaks up while video appears stable: Remember that audio also uses upload capacity. Reduce video bitrate and test again with the same audio settings and content.
  • The test passes, but a long stream later stops: Check power, heat, the computer’s network connection and OBS reconnect behavior during a longer trial. A successful short test does not establish 24/7 reliability.

OBS’s x264 guidance explains encoder choices, but the available evidence does not establish a single best encoder preset for every computer or stream. Start with settings your hardware can maintain and verify them in a representative test: OBS: Streaming with x264.
