How to Set Narrator to Read Math Symbols in Windows 11

Use Narrator’s Math punctuation mode to hear most mathematical symbols in Windows 11, and learn which settings control voice and speed.

To make Narrator speak mathematical symbols, switch its punctuation reading mode to Math. While Narrator is running, press the Narrator key with Alt and the left or right bracket key until Narrator announces “Math.” The Narrator key is usually Caps Lock or Insert, depending on your keyboard configuration.

Switch Narrator to Math mode

  1. If Narrator is not running, open Settings > Accessibility > Narrator and start it. Narrator is included with Windows 11; no separate download is required. Microsoft’s complete Narrator guide explains the screen reader and its controls.

Math mode reads most mathematical symbols. It is a punctuation-reading setting, not a choice of voice or speaking speed. Microsoft lists five punctuation modes:

Change voice, speed, or other speech behavior

If by “speech style” you mean the voice or the way Narrator speaks more generally, open Narrator settings with Windows logo key + Ctrl + N. These controls are separate from the Math punctuation mode. Microsoft’s customization guide describes the available options.

  • Voice: Choose among the voices available on the device.
  • Speed: Adjust the rate in Narrator settings, or press Narrator + + to increase it and Narrator + - to decrease it.
  • Pitch and volume: Adjust them in Narrator settings. Narrator + Ctrl + + or - changes volume; pressing Ctrl stops current speech.
  • Verbosity and reading detail: Settings include controls for verbosity, capitalization, formatted text, phonetic character reading, and punctuation pauses. Some options are unavailable with a natural voice.

Available voices vary with language and which voices are installed. Microsoft explains how to add language voices in its supported languages and voices guide; a particular voice may not be available on every device.
