A limit order sets the price at which you agree to trade ETH and an expiry; it does not execute immediately at any price. Slippage tolerance is different: on a regular Uniswap Protocol swap, it sets the maximum price movement you will accept while the transaction is pending. Neither control guarantees a trade will complete, and there is no universally correct slippage percentage.
How do I set a limit order for ETH?
These steps apply to the Uniswap web app, not every exchange or wallet. Uniswap describes a limit order as an agreement to swap at a price you set. Once submitted, it is made available to third-party fillers, which may match it if the order’s conditions can be met. Uniswap’s limit-order instructions cover the web-app flow.

- Connect your wallet to the Uniswap web app and select Limit.
- Choose the token you will pay and the token you want to receive. For an ETH trade, check that the selected asset is the intended ETH asset on the network you mean to use.
- Enter the amount and set the execution price. The quick-price options are relative to the current market price.
- Choose an expiry, then review the order details.
- Submit the order and sign the wallet message when prompted.
Uniswap says there is no slippage for limit orders in the ordinary swap-tolerance sense: the order is intended to execute only at the agreed price if it is matched. That does not mean it is guaranteed to fill. A market price reaching your chosen price is not enough on its own; an available filler, sufficient liquidity and token balance, and viable network costs can all affect execution. An unmatched order can remain open until you cancel it or it expires. Uniswap explains limit-order execution conditions.

For Uniswap Protocol v2, v3 and v4 swaps, slippage tolerance is the maximum price movement accepted between submitting a swap and its execution. For an exact-input trade, the tolerance is applied in terms of the output tokens; for an exact-output trade, it is applied in terms of the input tokens. Uniswap’s developer documentation defines slippage.

There is no single percentage that is right for every ETH swap. Before confirming, inspect the live quote, the amount you expect to receive, pool liquidity and the displayed price impact. Set a tolerance only as wide as you are willing to accept: a tighter setting allows less adverse movement but can cause the swap to fail if conditions change before execution; a broader setting permits more movement and can result in a less favorable trade.
Do not assume the same setting works identically for every Uniswap route. Uniswap’s documentation distinguishes UniswapX from classic protocol swaps: for UniswapX, slippage tolerance does not cap order spread in the same way. See Uniswap’s explanation of the distinction.

Is slippage the same as price impact?
No. Price impact is the expected effect your trade size has on the pool price; larger trades or thinner liquidity can increase it. Slippage tolerance is the amount of additional price movement you permit between submitting a swap and its execution. A swap can therefore have material price impact in its quote even before any further movement occurs while it is pending. Uniswap’s support article explains price impact.
Why did my ETH swap fail?
A regular swap with a low tolerance may fail if the price moves beyond the permitted range before execution. Increasing tolerance can allow more movement, but it is not automatically the right fix: first compare the updated quote and price impact with the result you are willing to accept. A limit order can fail to fill for different reasons, including unavailable fillers, insufficient liquidity or balance, or network costs that make execution impractical; it may instead remain open until canceled or expired.

| Control or measure | What it specifies | If conditions do not fit | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit order | An agreed execution price and expiry | It may remain open or expire if a filler cannot match it | Execution can depend on liquidity, an available filler, network costs and token balance. |
| Swap slippage tolerance | Maximum accepted price movement during pending execution | The swap may fail if movement exceeds the tolerance; a wider tolerance permits more movement | UniswapX does not use tolerance to cap spread in the same way as classic protocol swaps. |
| Price impact | The expected effect of trade size on pool price | A larger trade or thinner liquidity can increase it | It is distinct from movement that occurs while a transaction is pending. |
