For a 4K 60 fps YouTube Live stream, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds—or 120 frames if your encoder asks for a frame count—and use 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, progressive scan, and a closed GOP. YouTube says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval and says a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream troubleshooting guidance are the references for these settings.
Recommended 4K 60 fps settings
| Encoder setting | Use | What to enter or check |
|---|---|---|
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | At 60 fps, enter 120 frames if the encoder asks for GOP size in frames. Do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| GOP | Closed | Select “Closed” or “fixed” if your encoder exposes open/closed or fixed/variable GOP options. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. |
| B-frames | 2 | Use two B-frames. |
| Reference frames | 1 | Set one reference frame. |
| Scan | Progressive | Use progressive scan. |
| Rate control | CBR | Choose constant bitrate encoding. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended | YouTube recommends RTMPS; RTMP is also listed. |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular encoder or upload connection will sustain a 4K broadcast reliably. Names and locations of controls differ across encoder software and hardware; look for the equivalent GOP, keyframe, B-frame, and reference-frame options.

How to set the keyframe interval
- Open your encoder’s stream or video output settings. Find the keyframe interval, keyframe frequency, or GOP-size field.
- Set the interval to 2 seconds. If the field uses seconds, enter 2. If it uses frames at 60 fps, enter 120.
- Set GOP mode to closed/fixed. If there is an open-versus-closed or variable-versus-fixed choice, choose closed or fixed.
- Apply the setting and verify the output. Some encoders may report an ingestion error if the GOP size is wrong; confirm the actual configured output rather than assuming a saved value took effect.
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. A 2-second interval is the direct target; 4 seconds is an upper limit, not the preferred setting.

How many B-frames should you use?
Use 2 B-frames and 1 reference frame, alongside progressive scan. These are YouTube’s recommended advanced frame settings. If your encoder does not expose these controls, do not assume that a similarly named setting is equivalent; check that encoder’s documentation for the precise option supported.

Choose a 4K60 bitrate and codec
YouTube’s listed ingestion bitrate recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60 fps depend on the codec. The values below are recommendations published by YouTube, not a promise that your internet connection can sustain them.
| Ingest codec | Recommended bitrate | Minimum listed bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
Use CBR and choose a bitrate your upload connection can maintain consistently. YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; test the upload bitrate and favor a stable connection over a setting that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.

HDR and codec choice
For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265. YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For non-HDR streams, choose among H.264, H.265, or AV1 according to your encoder’s supported output and the bitrate your connection can reliably provide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest before the broadcast and monitor stream health
- Run a test stream. Include audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast; a static test image will not reveal the same issues as moving content.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages. During the event, watch for warnings and ingestion errors instead of assuming that a connected encoder means the feed is healthy.
- Review keyframe and GOP errors first. Confirm the interval is 2 seconds (120 frames at 60 fps), no more than 4 seconds, and the GOP is closed/fixed.
- Check bitrate stability. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate to a level the connection can maintain, then test again.
At 4K/2160p, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; streams are optimized for quality and set to normal latency. Plan the broadcast around that behavior rather than expecting a low-latency mode for 4K.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 settings problems
| Symptom | Likely setting to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports keyframe or GOP errors | Interval may be wrong, GOP size may be incorrect, or GOP may be open/variable. | Set 2 seconds (120 frames at 60 fps), keep the interval at 4 seconds or less, and use closed/fixed GOP. Verify the encoder is actually outputting those values. |
| Stream drops frames or becomes unstable | The configured bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain. | Test upload bitrate and reduce the configured bitrate until it remains reliable. YouTube’s listed 4K60 values are codec-specific recommendations, not connection guarantees. |
| HDR output is unsupported or incorrect | Codec and HDR support may not match. | For HDR over RTMP(S), use H.265 rather than AV1, which YouTube says is not supported for HDR. |
| The picture or sound behaves differently from the real event | The test may not resemble the planned broadcast. | Repeat the test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health during the actual event. |
