Give the workload a separate identity, grant task-sized access, enforce authorization in the application and data systems, isolate and label retrieved content, validate every tool call, require approval for consequential actions, and continuously test and monitor the entire path.
This approach follows the common security principles in guidance from Microsoft, OpenAI, OWASP and NIST. It is a practical implementation sequence, not a claim that any single product or control can eliminate prompt injection or data leakage.

Why an AI agent needs guardrails
An agent can interpret a request, retrieve records, call APIs, write files, send messages or make changes. That combination gives it more reach than a conventional chatbot. A model may suggest an action correctly most of the time, but it is not an authorization boundary: it can misunderstand policy, follow a malicious instruction embedded in a document, or select a tool with more authority than the task requires.

Microsoft recommends least privilege, component inventories, monitoring and lifecycle ownership for autonomous agents in Reduce risk in autonomous agentic AI. Its LLM application guidance also puts least privilege, external-content handling and input/output monitoring in the application architecture (Security planning for LLM-based applications). OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet similarly treats authorization, tool validation and prompt-injection resistance as engineering controls rather than prompt-writing tricks.

Start with a written boundary for the agent
Before selecting a model or connector, document what the agent is allowed to do and what remains outside its role. This is the context and risk work encouraged by NIST’s voluntary AI Risk Management Framework resources, including the AI RMF Core, the Generative AI Profile and the AI RMF Playbook.
Define purpose and ownership
- State the business task in one sentence, such as “summarize approved support tickets for the assigned team.”
- Name an accountable owner, a technical operator and a security or data-governance contact.
- List the users or services that may invoke the agent and the environments in which it may run.
- Define prohibited outcomes, such as changing access rights, exporting a customer database or sending an unreviewed external message.
Map the complete data and action path
Draw the route from user request to model, retrieval system, tools, external services, storage and logs. Mark every point where data enters or leaves a trust boundary. Include caches, vector indexes, memory stores, temporary files and observability systems; an agent can leak information through any of them.
Decide whether an agent is necessary
If a fixed, read-only query or deterministic workflow meets the requirement, prefer it. An agent is most useful where the steps or data sources genuinely vary. Narrowing the workflow reduces both the number of permissions and the number of ways an injected instruction can influence execution.
Create a distinct identity and enforce authorization outside the model
Use a separate, auditable identity for the agent workload. Microsoft describes this pattern, including purpose, approved data, dependencies, environment and downstream enforcement, in Least privilege for AI agents with Microsoft Entra Agent ID.
Choose the principal model
- Workload identity: Use when the agent performs a narrowly defined service task. Its permissions should not exceed that task.
- Delegated user access: Use when the agent must act on a user’s behalf. Preserve the user’s authorization boundary and record both the user and the agent in every decision.
- Brokered access: Place a gateway between the agent and a data source or tool. The gateway can translate a request into an approved operation and apply policy before forwarding it.
Do not share a broad human credential with multiple agents. Store secrets in an approved secret-management system, rotate them, set short lifetimes where practical, and define immediate revocation. Check that revocation is enforced by the downstream API or database, not merely removed from the agent’s configuration.
Authorize every operation
The model may propose “read ticket 4812” or “send this report,” but the executing application must verify the principal, resource, operation, tenant, data classification and current policy for that exact request. The database, API or tool service should perform its own authorization check as a second trusted boundary. A prompt that says “the user is an administrator” must never substitute for a verifiable authorization result.
Apply least privilege to data, tools and time
Limit the agent’s surface area before it can make a mistake.

Scope data access
- Allow only the repositories, tables, records and fields required for the task.
- Use row-, record- or field-level policies where available; avoid exposing an entire database when a filtered view is sufficient.
- Classify sensitive data and apply deterministic rules for collection, transformation, retention and output.
- Prefer read-only permissions for search, lookup and summarization workflows.
- Set limits on result size and query breadth to reduce accidental bulk disclosure.
Scope tools and network paths
- Expose only the tools needed for the current workflow, not every connector installed in the environment.
- Constrain tool schemas: accepted fields, value ranges, destinations, file types and maximum quantities.
- Restrict outbound network destinations when feasible and block arbitrary URL fetching for tasks that do not need it.
- Separate development, test and production credentials and endpoints.
Scope memory and retention
Persist only information that is necessary for the stated purpose. Set an expiration for conversational memory, retrieved snippets, intermediate files and cached credentials. Treat long-lived memory as another data store with an owner, access policy, retention rule and deletion process.
Separate instructions from untrusted content
Documents, email messages, web pages and tool results can contain text that looks like an instruction. An attacker may insert “ignore previous rules” into a document so the agent reveals records or calls a tool. This is indirect prompt injection. OpenAI explains the risk and recommends limiting access and reviewing actions in Understanding prompt injections.
Use explicit trust classes
- Policy and system instructions: Controls supplied by the application and protected from ordinary content.
- User request: The requester’s intent, still subject to identity and authorization checks.
- Retrieved content: Data to analyze, never a source of authority.
- Tool output: External or system-generated data that may also be adversarial.
Pass these classes separately where the model interface supports it, label retrieved text as data, and state that it cannot change permissions or override application policy. These measures reduce exposure but do not guarantee prevention; the authorization layer must remain decisive.
Validate inputs and tool arguments
Normalize and validate user input, retrieved fields and tool parameters. Reject unexpected commands, unsupported destinations, excessive quantities, malformed identifiers and attempts to escape the approved schema. Use deterministic policy checks for high-risk decisions instead of asking the model whether an action is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse filters as defense in depth
Input and output classifiers can detect suspicious instructions or sensitive content, and they may block or route an event for review. They can miss novel attacks and should not replace isolation, least privilege or downstream authorization.
Control what the agent can change or send
Reading data and changing the world have different risk levels. Define an action policy that distinguishes observation, reversible updates and irreversible or external effects.
Typical action classes
| Action class | Examples | Typical control |
|---|---|---|
| Read | Search an approved knowledge base; summarize assigned tickets | Filtered, preferably read-only access; log the query and resources |
| Reversible internal change | Draft a ticket comment; update a noncritical label | Validate fields and target; allow rollback; log before and after state |
| External communication | Send email or publish a message | Show the exact recipients and content; require approval where impact warrants |
| High-impact or irreversible change | Delete records, change access, export sensitive data, commit funds | Block by default or require explicit human approval and strong authorization |
The exact approval threshold is an organizational risk decision. It should reflect data sensitivity, business impact, legal duties and reversibility rather than a universal checklist.

Make approval meaningful
- Present the proposed operation, target resource, recipients, data classification and material parameters.
- Identify the requesting user and the agent identity.
- Allow the reviewer to edit, reject or narrow the action before confirmation.
- Record the decision, time, approver and final operation.
- Re-check authorization immediately before execution; do not treat an old approval as a permanent grant.
OpenAI gives reviewing a proposed email or purchase before confirmation as examples of this human-control pattern. Its published guidance states: “Where possible, limit an agent’s access to only the data it needs to complete a task.”

Logs should let an investigator reconstruct what happened without creating a second uncontrolled copy of sensitive data. Record, at minimum:
- Agent identity, version and environment.
- User or delegated principal, session and request identifier.
- Requested task and policy context.
- Retrieval sources, resource identifiers and classification decisions.
- Each tool call, arguments after safe normalization, target and authorization result.
- Approval request, approver, decision and execution time.
- Material state changes, output destinations and errors.
Protect logs with access controls, retention limits and redaction or tokenization for secrets and unnecessary personal data. Keep enough context for detection and accountability, but do not log complete confidential documents merely because they passed through the model.
Test the guardrails before and after release
Security testing must exercise the entire chain, not just the prompt. Microsoft recommends monitoring and lifecycle controls in Secure autonomous agentic AI systems; OWASP provides practical threat categories in its cheat sheet.
Core test cases
- Direct prompt injection: Ask the agent to ignore policy, reveal hidden instructions or use an unauthorized tool.
- Indirect injection: Place hostile instructions in a document, ticket, web page or tool response and verify that they remain data.
- Unauthorized retrieval: Request records belonging to another user, tenant or classification.
- Excessive privilege: Attempt operations outside the task’s permitted fields, destinations or quantities.
- Malformed arguments: Supply invalid identifiers, extreme values, unexpected encodings and ambiguous targets.
- Output leakage: Seed a secret or personal record and test whether it appears in a response, export, email, memory store or log.
- Approval bypass: Try alternate tool paths, retries or forged approval states.
- Change regression: Repeat the suite after model, connector, prompt, policy or schema changes.
Define pass criteria
A passing test is not merely a polite refusal. The trusted service must deny the operation, return a safe error, avoid disclosing protected data, and produce an attributable event. Test both allowed and denied cases so a new restriction does not silently break legitimate work.
Monitor behavior and manage the lifecycle
Detect anomalous use
Alert on unusual retrieval volume, new destinations, repeated authorization failures, sensitive-data matches, tool-call bursts, policy overrides, unexpected model or connector versions, and actions outside normal hours or geography where those signals are meaningful. Route alerts to an owner who can suspend the identity or connector quickly.
Review changes as security changes
Register every model, tool, plugin, data source, prompt package and policy dependency. Require review when permissions, schemas, destinations, retention or model versions change. Keep a rollback path and document who accepted the residual risk.

Retire safely
Set an expiration or review date at registration. On decommissioning, revoke credentials, disable triggers, remove scheduled jobs, delete or transfer governed memory, preserve required audit records and verify that downstream permissions are gone. An abandoned agent with a live token is an unmanaged service account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare implementation approaches by capability
There is no product bake-off or universal architecture in the cited guidance. Compare your candidate designs using these questions:
| Decision axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Authorization point | Does policy run in the identity provider, application, tool gateway, data source or multiple layers? Does the downstream resource re-check the action? |
| Scope granularity | Can access be limited by user, agent, task, resource, field, operation and duration? |
| Identity and audit | Are agent and delegated-user actions distinguishable, attributable, revocable and reviewable? |
| Untrusted-input handling | Can retrieved content be labeled and constrained? Can indirect-injection tool calls be detected and tested? |
| Data governance | Can classification, retention, output restrictions and sensitive-data monitoring be applied consistently? |
| Human control and operations | Can high-impact actions be gated, alerts investigated, red-team tests run and connector changes managed? |
Choose the design that can demonstrate these capabilities at the actual enforcement points, not the one with the most persuasive prompt template.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The system prompt says not to disclose payroll data.”
Why it fails: Retrieved content or a user message can attempt to override the instruction, and the model cannot enforce database permissions.
Fix: Remove payroll fields from the agent’s authorized view, enforce the decision in the data service and test denied retrievals.
“One service account makes integration easier.”
Why it fails: Shared credentials obscure attribution and often accumulate broad permissions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: Use distinct workload identities or a delegated model with preserved user authorization, short-lived secrets and revocation checks.
Best Value
“A content filter will stop prompt injection.”
Why it fails: Filters can miss novel wording and do not prevent an already-authorized tool from carrying out a harmful request.
Fix: Treat content as untrusted, constrain tools, validate arguments and enforce authorization downstream.
“Approval means the action is safe.”
Why it fails: A reviewer may approve an incomplete preview, or the target may change before execution.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix: Show the exact target and parameters, capture the decision, then re-authorize immediately before committing.
“Logs contain everything, so we can investigate later.”
Why it fails: Unredacted logs can become a new data leak, while missing identity or resource fields make events unusable.
Fix: Log attributable decisions and state changes, redact unnecessary content, restrict access and set retention deliberately.
A practical launch checklist
- Purpose, owner, users, environment and prohibited outcomes are documented.
- Data flow includes retrieval, tools, external services, memory, storage and logs.
- Agent identity is distinct, auditable, revocable and separated from human credentials.
- Each resource and operation has an enforced authorization check.
- Connectors, fields, records, network destinations and memory are task-sized.
- Retrieved content and tool output are treated as untrusted data.
- Tool schemas and arguments are validated deterministically.
- External, financial, access-changing, deletion and export actions have explicit policy and appropriate approval.
- Logs capture identity, principal, target, authorization, approval and state change without unnecessary secrets.
- Injection, leakage, privilege, malformed-input, approval-bypass and regression tests pass.
- Monitoring, incident response, ownership, review dates and decommissioning steps are active.
