How to Set Gboard as the Keyboard on a Samsung Galaxy

Enable Gboard in your Galaxy’s on-screen keyboard settings, set it as the active keyboard, and switch back to it from the Globe-key menu if needed.

To switch to Google Keyboard—now called Gboard—on a Samsung Galaxy, install or update the app if needed, enable it in the phone’s on-screen keyboard settings, then select it as the active keyboard. If it is already enabled, you can switch to it from the keyboard itself without reinstalling anything.

Install or locate Gboard

Gboard is Google’s keyboard app. Some Android devices already have it installed or set as the default; others require installation. Check the app list or open your app store, search for Gboard, and install it if it is missing. If it is already installed, check whether an update is available. Google’s Gboard setup instructions cover installation and initial setup.

Enable Gboard in Samsung settings

Installing Gboard does not necessarily make it the active keyboard. It must be enabled in the phone’s on-screen keyboard list, then selected for typing. Samsung menu labels and paths differ across Galaxy models and Android or One UI versions, so searching Settings is often the quickest route.

  1. Open Settings and search for On-screen keyboard or Default keyboard.
  2. Open the keyboard-management screen. Depending on your software version, it may be called On-screen keyboard, Manage keyboards, or something similar.
  3. Turn on Gboard if it is listed but disabled. Confirm any on-screen prompt.
  4. Return to the keyboard settings and choose Gboard as the default or active keyboard.

Google’s Android instructions describe managing Gboard from the on-screen or virtual keyboard settings; the exact Samsung labels may vary. See Google’s setup guide if you need the Android-side steps.

Restore Gboard if it disappears

If Gboard no longer appears after an update, check whether it is still enabled before uninstalling or reinstalling it. Open Settings, search for On-screen keyboard, open the keyboard list, and turn Gboard on. The labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version. If Gboard is enabled but a different keyboard still appears, tap a text field and switch to Gboard with the Globe-key menu. Google includes these recovery steps in its troubleshooting instructions.

What to know about Gboard privacy

Google’s Gboard Help describes different handling for different features: searches made through Gboard are sent to Google to provide results; usage statistics are sent to improve the product; and voice input is sent for transcription when you use talk-to-text. Google says typed content other than searches, such as passwords or chats, is not sent, and learned words saved by Gboard stay on the device and can be deleted. This is Google’s description of its data practices, not an independent privacy audit. Details are in Google’s Gboard privacy information.
